RWA Bound
It's been a few years since I've been to an RWA conference, and two days beforehand, I already can't sleep because I'm so excited!
If you're going to be at the Marriott Marquis for the conference, I'm hoping I'll see you at:
* The Berkley Book signing in the Westside Ballroom on the 5th floor from 1-2:30pm on Friday, 7/24
* The Surviving Hybrid panel in the Gramercy and Olstead room on the 7th floor from 11-12pm on Saturday, 7/25 (I'll be on the panel with Tera Lynn Childs and Shana Galen.)
Unfortunately, I didn't get into the Literacy Autographing on Wednesday night, but I'm going to be hanging out with my good friend Judy Duarte, so you can say hi at her station! I'll be around until about 6:45.
Happy travels!

How Am I Reading Five Books at a Time?
How did this come to pass?
I've always been an eclectic reader, or maybe calling myself a "multi-reader" would be equally accurate. It's just that I get so excited about books that I go all buffet on them--I can't help piling more than one on my plate. In the past, they've been from different genres, and sometimes they have definite purposes, such as research for my writing or advanced reader copy blurbing. Sometimes a due date at the library will even dictate what I'm reading (as you will soon see).
But five at a time? That's ridiculous, even for me!
Maybe it's because this is *summer.* Magical, there-are-hardly-any-TV-shows-on-now summer. Maybe it's because I spazzed out at the library and put too many things on hold. Whatever the case, let's see what's on the buffet line these days, shall we?
1. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
The Why I Am Reading This:
My friend Tera Lynn Childs recommended this book to me. Those of you in the know are chuckling and thinking, "Yeah, Chris, this has only been on the YA bestseller lists for, like, three years." (That's what Tera said, LOL.) So I'm a little behind, but I wasn't going to let being passe stop me from reading about a girl who committed suicide and sent cassette tapes to thirteen people who played a part in her demise. I'm listening on audio from the library, so there's a due date and, hence, a rush to finish. The story is a tragic mystery, and as I near the end, my emotions are going nuts. I'm pissed at Hannah, the girl who took her life, but that's all I'm going to say because...spoilers. I wouldn't do that to you!
2. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
The Why I Am Reading This:
The Skimm told me to. Also, are you sensing a pattern here? (YA, anyone? You'll see why I'm YAing in #3.)
So far, this book (a library Kindle loan--told you all my library books came at once!) reminds me of what an old Jay McInerney story would be like without the drugs and debauchery. We'll see how Less Than Zero it gets, if it even does.
3. The Rules by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie
The Why I Am Reading This:
a) Nancy Holder is a good friend. b) I had an idea for a YA thriller and was dismayed to find out that my good friend had written one before I did. Oh, well! c) It's inspired by movies like Scream, and you know I'm not going to pass that goodness up.
Surprise! This is not a library book.
4. And Then Forever by Shirley Jump
The Why I Am Reading This:
I was lucky enough to be asked to read an ARC for Shirley Jump's new contemporary romance series. Yay! I am an ARC hussy, and I can't wait to give this a blurb. (It'll be released later this month.)
And...
5. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
The Why I Am Reading This:
Um, who isn't reading this? If you're not, I suppose you'd better get on the psychological thriller wagon. Er, train. This is an audio loan from the library, which, now that I'm thinking about it, must've taken a perverse pleasure in making all my requests available at *at the same time.*
The less I say about this book the better, because again--spoilers. Just know that it starts out very Rear Window-y and is basically a psychopath's version of a catfight at this point.
Yeah, you're totally checking it out now.
And there you go. BTW, I frequently tweet about what I'm reading on Twitter, so join me on #amreading @ChrisMarieGreen and @CrystalGreenMe!

Comic-Con, Friday
Today was opposite day at the Con. Whereas yesterday was all about doing the most popular things possible (Hall H, peoples!), today was about just kicking around the exhibit floor, mostly in the spaces where smaller artists hang out. I had two younguns with me, so I didn't even get to drop by *my* booths to say hi to those I know!
One member of our party bought a righteous fake sword at a "weapons" booth, so that was major. The second was on a serious search for the Hannah Lynn booth: she's an artist who creates gorgeous renditions of everything from mermaids to ballerinas. In other worlds, every girl would love Hannah's work! (Including me. )
Of course, no trip to the Con would be complete without attending the TEEN TITANS GO! panel. Always hilarious. Then we decided to see what was going on outside of the convention center, in the "interactive zone" by Petco Park. You don't need a badge to go in here, so if you want to get a taste of the Con, you can visit for free.
Warner Brothers had a big presence with SCREAM QUEENS (which gave us free strawberry "blood" ice cream--and it was good!--and took pix of us looking horrified). 91X, the alt radio station that provided the soundtrack to my younger years, was there, along with the PEANUTS MOVIE and food trucks. It was actually more pleasant than the Con exhibit floor, which is always so crowded that you find yourself almost eating the hair of the person in front of you.
Hmm--it doesn't sound like we did much, but we did. Honest. And I'm absolutely sleep-hammered now...

Comic-Con, Thursday
Comic-Con threw me a curveball today!
It's extremely tough to get into Hall H these days. Like, it's probably easier to find a unicorn tooting rainbows than it is to get into Hall H. But what do you know? A half hour before the MOCKINGJAY, Part 2 panel, Twitter told me that people were waltzing right in.
So we waltzed, and we saw this striking and powerful teaser, along with a trailer...and lots of the cast! Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Willow Shields were there with Francis Lawrence (the director) and Nina Jacobson. JLaw, Josh H, and Liam H were having the most fun.
We also hung out for Trailer Park and the DR. WHO panel, plus got some swag from the MTV booth: a SCREAM t-shirt, buddies!

Thank God for Netflix During the Summer
The dividing line between the rest of the year and summer for me isn't a change in the weather. It comes during that final week of TV programming when all the season finales happen. Immediately afterward, it's like...poof! Nothing more to entertain you, minion.Thank God for Netflix, because that's when binge-TV watching becomes my life.
I'd been saving Bloodline for summer, and it's the perfect series for this time of year: it takes place in the Florida Keys, where the water comes in different, vivid shades of blue and the sand is white and pure. You can almost feel the humidity on the skin of the characters as they wear their sweat-soaked tank tops and hang out at dusk at beachside bars. But Bloodline offers so much more than just atmosphere--it has a grimy noir feel that weaves itself in and out of a dysfunctional family, leaving you dwelling in more than one layer of darkness, just like those different shades of water-blue.
There're family secrets. Love dramas. And death.
It is awesome.
The only problem is the big hole left in the center of me now that I've binge-watched the heck out of Bloodline. I'm actually starting on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to feel happier.

Nice is...Nice (THE FAULT IN OUR STARS)
I finally watched THE FAULT IN OUR STARS.
Yes, I'm a little behind on this, just as I was behind on reading a certain book that I shall not name except to say that it was a big seller and it infuriated me beyond reason. But I was so far behind on my reading that anything I wanted to tweet or say to anyone was irrelevant. It ticks me off that I'm dragging so far behind the Cool Train because, once I've consumed that once-popular movie or book, my passion to discuss them are passe.
Kind of like now.
(Just a sidenote: I've been watching the Cool Train go by for a few years now with this blog, pretty much ignoring its existence. I used to do a lot of movie reviews here and I used to blog extensively about Comic-Con, San Diego. In fact, I was going full steam ahead on the Nerd Express until... I don't know. I lost the enthusiasm, and I felt like *everyone* was blogging about the same things, so I stopped.)
But can I risk being passe? Because I'd just like to say a few words about THE FAULT IN OUR STARS...
Truthfully, I thought this movie was going to depress me. I mean, it's about people with cancer, and it can't possibly end well unless there's a total cop out. I hadn't read the book, either, even though I knew it was a bestseller. (Even *more* truthfully, a close family member was also terminally sick, and I just didn't want to face more sickness.)
But in spite of the cheesy post-"Afterschool Special" soundtrack and the movie's subject, I was completely and utterly charmed. Was I expecting jaded and kind of unlikable characters who glibbed their way through the dialogue? Yes. Was I expecting nihilistic behavior for the sake of driving home the message that DEATH DOESN'T SCARE ME? Oh, yeah (and part of that was there with Augustus's cigarette habit but, again--utterly charming, so it was all good).
What I got was a story about two very appealing people who love their parents, respect and take care of friends, and do all the things that are supposed to be so boring in a movie, like go on picnics and talk about art and send cute texts. Somehow not boring! What also surprised me was that the hero and heroine were never mean to each other just because the plot needed some conflict. They didn't have stupid fights for the sake of "pumping up" the tension. Death is the bad guy here, and it quietly stalks them during the entire film like a shadow in the background of an otherwise perfectly bright movie. It's refreshing to see such a simple concept done so touchingly well. Even when I could see the ending line of dialogue coming from a mile away, it still resonated.
So here's to simple and nice. Sometimes it really works.

A Day in Need of a Soundtrack
James Horner is feared dead.
Some of you might not know who Mr. Horner was, but that seems about right. His job was to remain in the background of films, whispering musical notes into our ears as the screen flashed with drama and action and romance. His job was to grab our hearts and emotions in the most subtle ways possible--through movie scores.
He took us worlds away in STAR TREK: THE WRATH OF KHAN.
He gave GLORY to the brave and fallen.
He made action scenes more intense in ALIENS.
He made quiet moments of heartbreak sing in FIELD OF DREAMS.
He made millions of people fall in love in TITANIC.
He gave us all A BEAUTIFUL MIND just by letting mind and heart come together.
And so much more.
As you listen to each cut, you can imagine what's happening. That's why I used and still use some of Mr. Horner's music to inspire writers and students to brainstorm their stories. I know people who were so moved by the theme from A BEAUTIFUL MIND that entire books were born from those three minutes of haunting, flowing, ethereal notes.
If you listen to a movie without the soundtrack, it's a totally different experience. That's what today feels like--a movie without the music, silent and a little numbing. All I want to do is fill it up with Mr. Horner's music.

A Thriller and a Pre-Order for a Hot Romance!
It's a busy summer! I've got two books for you all: a mystery romantic thriller from Chris Marie Green, and a hot romance from Crystal Green--one author, a world of stories, LOL. (And a lot of pen names.)
Let's start with the thriller!
It all started with a good-time cruise at sea…
When diver Katsu Espinoza is invited on a shark-cage expedition by her billionaire mentor, she’s definitely up for some adventure, even if it means spending time with his greedy heirs. Then she sees who the captain is—Will Ashton, the betraying ex-boyfriend who’d once shattered her heart. And as if that isn’t unexpected enough, her mentor decides that she’s going to inherit the millions of dollars that were supposed to go to his family!
…and turned into hell on earth when they got to the island.
Suddenly, Kat is the girl who swept in to steal a frail old man’s inheritance. Then a storm hits, stranding all of them on a deserted island, forcing them to survive in a paradise gone deadly, because it seems that someone here hasn’t forgotten the money; they’re murdering victims with gruesome precision—and Will, with his secretive ways, is at the top of Kat’s growing list of suspects. And that list is getting horrifically whittled down one…by one…by one…
TERROR ISLAND has been called a white-knuckle thriller, a rollercoaster ride, a chilling murder mystery. And all of those descriptions definitely apply, just as they did when I first released this as BAITED under my Crystal Green name for an action adventure line called Bombshell. Since "Chris" is the one who writes thrillers nowadays, I decided to rebrand it under "her" name after I got the rights to the book back. I was ecstatic to have this under my control again--it's one of my favorite creations, and I think you'll see it has a lot in common with my urban fantasies (although TERROR ISLAND doesn't have paranormal elements)!

Now we come to the hot romance that's on pre-order!
Everyone at the Rough & Tumble Saloon has a secret…
When Reece Marlow, the ex water polo Olympian athlete, hit Las Vegas, he hit it hard—gambling, carousing, and making it a point to have sex at every Sin City landmark. Some might say he’s trying to play away the emptiness he feels from leaving his superstar career behind, but Reece is fending off even bigger secrets—ones that could potentially ruin his high-flying, endorsement-filled life.
When he meets Talia McCarter at the Rough & Tumble, he doesn’t know that she’s fighting her own inner demons, but these two are bound to light the desert nights on fire with their hot romance—and maybe find love in the flames…
This one is written by "Crystal Green." (Didn't you guess?) It's a prequel to my already established Rough and Tumble series! I really wanted to write a shorter novel (50,000 words and without a subplot) so I could introduce that dusty saloon on the fringes of Vegas to more readers for a lower price. WET AND WILD has another sexy bad boy for you to fall for--a water polo player at that. (Have you ever seen those guys? Yow.)
Right now, WET AND WILD is on pre-order only at Kindle, but iBooks should have their page up very soon. On July 20, when the book is officially released, it'll also be available at Nook and Kobo, so keep your eyes peeled here for more info!

Right now, it's on pre-order at Kindle and iBooks, but you can already order a print copy at Createspace. However, this Monday, the release will go live and will also be available at Kobo and Nook. Stay tuned for more information!
Now we come to the hot romance that's also on pre-order!
