General intro & chit-chat

Hi, my name's Rowena and I'm a writer of YA novels. You may have seen some of my posts for my new YA fantasy novel - The Grumleys of Castle Grimwold. It's a Harry Potter-esque fantasy for readers from 12 - 15 with a haunted castle and ghosts and evil wizards. You get the idea. You can buy it on Amazon if you are keen! The Grumleys of Castle Grimwold

I've been writing for about 20 years now and while I do write other things - screenplays mostly - YA is my first love and I think it's because reading was such a big part of my life when I was growing up. In fact, I would say that pretty much 90 percent of what I know about people and the world I learnt from books. And yes - I mean fiction. A good book is like a time machine crossed with a magic carpet - it can take you anywhere, any time and show you the most amazing things and people.

So if you feel your world is small - or maybe its so mad you want to escape - there's always a book waiting to whisk you away.

Do you have a book that changed your life? Or that was the first book that made you fall in love with reading? Would love to hear about it.

Introducing The Grumleys of Castle Grimwold

Hi readers,

Just wanted to let you know that I have published my first Middle-Grade fantasy novel - The Grumleys of Castle Grimwold. It's a bit of a cross-over to YA - as I think 12 - 15 year olds who like the haunted castle, ghosts and wizards kind of fantasy will really enjoy it.

It's not just about magic of course, but about the things that we grasp on to so that we can feel special. In the book, 12 year old Nigel feels that he has nothing special to offer anyone - particularly not his family. His mum and dad pretty much ignore him and his 16 yo sister Ness calls him "Stupid".

But when his father buys a haunted castle in England and Nigel and his sister begin to discover the castle's secrets, it seems that he might actually have some magical powers after all. Best of all he actually makes a real friend in Rory, the 700 year old ghost of a Scottish Highlander.

It's not that simple of course. Nigel does learn about bravery and loyalty but also that the power that comes with magic can be divisive and destructive.

So, yes - it's a fantasy but it's also a coming of age story - and a story about family - as all the best books are!

If you would like a review copy, hit me up and I'll organize.
