Lisa de Nikolits is the author of eleven novels:

11. Everything You Dream is Real: "In this darkly funny, politically charged follow up, de Nikolits, always a fearless writer, taking no prisoners. Whether you've read The Rage Room or not, Everything You Dream is Real is a searing, accessible fable for our collective fears and weaknesses, as fun as it is thought-provoking."

10. The Rage Room: “In her latest captivating book, Lisa de Nikolits proffers not only a roller coaster of entertainment, but also, sharp political commentary in complicated times. The Rage Room is an intricately woven dystopian world, rich in strong female characters who easily whisk readers to a world of futuristic follies. Move over George Orwell—De Nikolits shows us ho

If I don't have a big idea to work on, then I write sentences, fragments (observations/poems) that I may or may not use later. My motto is 'write one thing a day' and I do - sometimes that thing is thousands of words, other times it's only a sentence. 'Just one thing a day' is how I do it, and I don't look beyond that or stress because I haven't written more. After all, novels are made up of one sentence after another! (less)

And when a story starts to really gel and come together, it's one of the best feelings in the world! And when people like (or even hate) your characters, they are relating to them in a real way, as if they were real people, and it doesn't get better than that! I love entertaining people too. I know, for me, that escaping into a good book is one of life's greatest pleasures and that I can offer that to a reader, is such an incredible gift. I know how much books mean to me, so to be part of the crowd who helps create them, well, I feel truly blessed.(less)

Writing about apartheid South Africa - why it's so hard.

It is well-nigh impossible to write about apartheid South Africa. I know, because I've tried, with The Witchdoctor's Bones and Rotten Peaches. And I have a short story coming up in the forthcoming anthology of the Mesdames of Mayhem's 2022 anthology, In a Land of Fear and Denial, about a young girl who believes there is a tokoloshe in her bedroom closet.

So I know how hard it is, to write about th Read more of this blog post »

Joseph Brodsky
“When hit by boredom, let yourself be crushed by it; submerge, hit bottom. In general, with things unpleasant, the rule is: The sooner you hit bottom, the faster you surface. The idea here is to exact a full look at the worst. The reason boredom deserves such scrutiny is that it represents pure, undiluted time in all its repetitive, redundant, monotonous splendor.

Boredom is your window on the properties of time that one tends to ignore to the likely peril of one's mental equilibrium. It is your window on time's infinity. Once this window opens, don't try to shut it; on the contrary, throw it wide open.”
Joseph Brodsky
