Happy Birthday Christopher Smart born April 11 288 Years Ago

On this day 1722 Christopher Smart was born into a little body. A premature baby, he suffered from a delicate health all his life. Most famous for his religious poetry, in particular his "A Song to David," Smart wrote one of the strangest (I think) books in the language, the Jubilate Agno. "Jubilate" is the plural imperative "rejoice," and "agno" the ablative of "lamb."

Grateful for a few studies that suggest we need to take care when either working toward happiness or in living an ethical life, that we not do so without also carefully cultivating an affiliative, generous attitude and a kind affect. The studies indicate that both striving toward happiness and working to be ethically upright can easily lead to selfishness and self-righteousness.
