WIP Wednesday - The Happy Dance

At the beginning of December I promised myself I'd delve into the second draft of 'The Museum of Impossible Artefacts' in January and near the end of December I promised myself I wouldn't. Of course, being a contrary sort (and struggling with my WIP short which started funny and has meandered into blahville), I've printed the first twenty pages of the book, retitled it and am staring at the empty page. But at least I have a title, right?

Reason for title change no. 74: Although the museum appears in about the first 70ish pages, I realised midway through writing the first draft that the location didn't work and will be changing it to another venue this draft.

New title is 'The Ghosts of Folding Time'... for now. Not certain I like it. We'll see. At the moment its purpose is to add a spooky, ghastly feel to my dystopian time travel book. Like having a haunting tune playing in the background, I look at the title and it reminds me to slide the book into darkness. Oh no, that sounds as if I'm posing. Scrub those lines from your memory. Like now.

And talking of books, I spent a couple of hours on Sunday night chatting online to Eric Reynolds about Theatre of Curious Acts, and it looks as if the release date will be September. Oh my goodness. Who needs to exercise when you can keep doing the happy dance.

TELEGRAM (From Me)

Hehehe - you're laughing with me, right? Right?

Hey who groaned at the back.

This productivity business sucks (insert personal preference), but I shall jolly along. Besides, it's kinda funny to get four rejections in four days in a brand new four-day-old year. I could probably take ten days without breaking. Although, I'm classing the rejection count as three because one was from Clarkesworld. I like to think of Clarkesworld as rehab for stories. Somewhere they can rest awhile and learn that no isn't a scary word.

Right, anyone have any tips on how to nail a board to an inbox to stop the mail flowing through. And for telegram enthusiasts (don't tell me if you are one, some things should be kept to yourself) apologies for the comma, I'm sure they weren't allowed (stop)

A Rainbow of Reviews

Kylie Bullivant sent me the following link on January 1st of all days. Talk about making someone's new year. Thanks, Kylie. Patrick Rutigliano has reviewed Triangulation: End of the Rainbow over at Shroud Magazine. This is what he has to say about my story:

Cate Gardner's trademark whimsy lightens the mood in the first pages of "The Meaning of Yellow" before exploring far deeper themes in a world robbed of color.

...and you can read the rest of the review here. Thanks, Patrick.

And talking of reviews. I've posted two new ones over at Skull Salad. Tying Knots by Ken Liu (Clarkesworld) and What They Hear in the Dark by Gary McMahon (Spectral Press).

January 1, 2011

Is it smelly in here, or is it me?

First post of the year and I must say, 2011 is looking mighty pretty.

So far I've subbed four stories all to must-get-into publications that I intend to stalk until they or I die. Gosh, does that sound threatening? Well I believe I claimed 2011 would be the year I became a bad, bad girl. See, I keep my resolutions.

Three of the stories were waiting for markets to open today, and the fourth is a new story that I finished editing today... 'If Monsters Lurk; if.' Wish it luck, its path could be bumpy and long. Because, quite frankly, if it's accepted by the market I've just sent it to I'll eat your chocolate smothered hat. And that would be bad, because (whispers) we're giving up the evil bean in 2011.

In the spirit of pushing myself, I'm going to put a widget (that almost sounds naughty - just me) in my sidebar and keep a running tally of stories written, word count etc because last year I was lazy. Unless you count tweeting as productive. I don't. I did a quick tally last night and discovered I wrote and submitted about 14 new stories last year. Considering I wrote 60 stories in 2008 - which I discovered when I re-read this post - 2010 me stunk.

Or rather, 2010 tweeting me stunk.

HAPPY 2011 Clicheness

As the saying goes nice people finish last...

Maybe in 2011, I should be very, very bad. Muahahah.

And ooh! How egotistical to refer to yourself as nice. YES!!! the badness has begun already.

HAPPY 2011 FOLKS.

Strap yourself in it's going to be a bumpy ride.
