Happy bug in a hat
My entry into Susanna Leonard Hill's Valentiny Writing Contest (must be 214 words and have someone grumpy in it)
Happy bug in a hat
On Valentine’s day I made an important discovery. I found a cure for the grumpy bug. In a hat!
Gr-gr-grumpy bug lives in grime and makes you grumpy if you catch it. Ha-ha-happy bug lives in a hat and makes you do funny things. It’s invisible, but I know it’s inside my dad’s hat. I put it on and chased the grumpy bug away.
Mom was easy. She looked sulky, but when she saw me wearing dad’s hat, she started giggling.
Dad was a serious case. ‘What are you doing in my hat?’ he asked. ‘I wish you’d stop using my things for dressing-up.’
The happy bug made me twirl. The hat dropped into the fluffy dust under Dad’s desk. I thought he would get even grumpier, but he put the hat back on my head and said, ‘Suits you. Can I try on one of yours?’
My sister Jane was the World Miss Grumpy. ‘You look ridiculous, leave me alone,’ she said.
In the kitchen, the very contagious happy bug was making Mom and Dad skip, singing, ‘Suppertime and the cookin’ is easy…’
‘What’s for pudding?’ asked Jane, trying not to smile.
‘Snotty blueberry snake,’ the happy bug made me say.
Jane gave me a high-five. ‘Spotty blueberry cake – my favourite. Happy Valentine’s.’
