FACT-CHECKING UNTRUTHS WITH UNTRUTHS

I wondered when this day would come. Having spent three plus years tolerating the growing number of untruths — up to now, “fact checked” almost continuously against objective events by the fourth estate — I’ve finally witnessed in my lifetime “fact checking” against subjective populist opinions by the fifth estate. That is fact-checking untruths with untruths. And it now has a name: QAnon. The name itself, “…Anon” speaks to the inability to trace the source of what QAnon says beyond itself. Drawing instead on religious, conspiratorial or cult aphorisms as “proof,” it represents the closing of the circle of untruth and it’s “selling” of those untruths to anxious Americans who don’t want to see the Emperor’s new clothes for what they really are: Pure illusion. There’s a reason why people “selling” untruths are often call “con men.” Circles of untruths, especially when they become opaque — sometimes called “occult” — are, in my mind, one of the most heinous of human behaviors.

In my recently released SCI-FU (science-based futuring) novel, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor, there are few assumptions carried over from our contemporary world; however, there is no room for untruths justified by unjustifiable untruths. For civilization to exist and hopefully flourish, there can only be four possible “proofs:” Proof by authority; scientific (repeatable, objective) proof; statistical proof and, I suggest, proof through M-superstring theory. The former three, each with its own inherent limitations, have been around for some time. the fourth, M-superstring theory, is a recent and yet to be fully tested way of proving truth. It’s hard enough to deal with “truth” and “truth value” using these limited methods of proof, without falling back into another Dark Age in which proof is accomplished via one or more logical fallacies.

The Edge of Madness

What keeps THE EDGE OF MADNESS “honest” is that it appeals more to logic and reason than hearsay and pure fantasy. Walk up to the edge of madness, curl your toes around the edge and peer beyond. I think you may find something other than irrational dystopia. I think, instead, you may discover one of a number of enjoyably plausible futures.

THE BEST DEFENSE

Watching the news today, I was entranced by the hearings surrounding Amy Coney Barrett for Supreme Court Justice. I’ve often wondered what the best defense might be: offense, telling the truth, staying rational and logical…but I was reminded that the best defense is inherent in the Pirate’s Code: “Take everything; give nothing back.” Add for sophistication, a fixed and knowing smile, and you have a rock-solid defense as long as you stick religiously to it. Some might argue that this translates to a display of the Zen way of life, with no words. But in the end, it’s not the person’s words or lack thereof that reveals, it’s the deeds, historical and present.

Why talk about this, you might be asking. Well, I’ve been thinking a lot about a concept presented to me many years ago: “There are no thought crimes.” And, while that may be true in today’s world, where thoughts, whatever they may be, are private, that may not be the case in a future world. I didn’t directly address this in my newly released SCI-FU (science-based futuring) novel, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor; however, I introduced it indirectly through the presence of Enforcers, specifically the one who visited Draff Rob Brie [Septican-Smite] and Billie Frann Frank {Tordon-Cass]’s attempted Sweet Sixteen Sexcapade. Yes, in this future world, part of coming-of-age is the opportunity to have a Sexcapade, either private or in public, public interest in new-adult sex being the latest rage. The point is, the two boys’ actions turned out quite differently from their thoughts, yet, in the end, what actually transpired was a bigger sensation than anything they imagined doing. It was in the doing, whether it followed their plan or not, that they revealed themselves.

Numerous celebrities have pointed out that “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Or, if you’re more direct action inclined, “No battle plan can survive the first round of bullet.” In THE EDGE OF MADNESS, while the boys initially perceive their coming-out as a failure, the observant Enforcer, who by all rights should have acted on this, simply assisted the two in retrieving their clothes and dignity, begging the question of which is more important, the unspoken plan or thoughts (spirit) or the action taken (our reality). WHY WICCA?

In my newly released SCI-FU (science-based futuring) novel, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020), the female protagonist, Simi Andry Jan [Jan-Rho], whom I've been spotting these last few posts, turns out to be a Wiccan witch. Why Wicca, many have asked, and even more, from where did the rich portrayal of the uniting of a Wiccan High Priestess and her High Warlock come? Simply put, from personal experience.

I had the unique opportunity of dating a Wiccan witch for some time, and, I came to assume, a leader of her coven. That would make me her possible leading Warlock. I witnessed many unusual things during our sojourn together, not the least on one night while we slept together on a deck in sleeping bags watching shooting stars. Perhaps she had some foreknowledge about an impending meteor shower, but I simply recall her sweeping an open arm across the midnight sky and the shower beginning in earnest. It left me awestruck and breathless. Another time, visiting Hawaii together, I stood on the lanai while she called the moray eels to her and fed them chicken feet. It was imposing and very humbling. Would I have made a good partner and warlock? I'll never know, as, for reasons quite appropriate, she left, but only after trying her hardest to make the relationship happen. I've often wondered what one would call the offspring of such a star-crossed mating? A witchlock or a warich?

What our time together impressed upon me, other than her abiding kindness and deep love of all things natural, was that many people long for to rediscover a fundamental attachment to the world in a time when we're increasingly being detached from it. I can easily imagine a plausible future world entranced, even led by Wicca at the edge of madness.

WHAT’S IN A LABEL?

In my newly released SCI-FU (science-based futuring) novel, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor (one of my several pen names), one the three protagonists, Simi Andry Jan [Jan-Rho], is an acronymeur by profession. She creates acronyms — labels — professionally. Ask her what’s in a label and she’d say “everything,” something not missed by today’s influencers and “pop” politicians on social media, predicating a future where, as Andry would say, “Everythings in the label. Everything.”

In her vastly more complex world, people are no different in wanting to quickly ascertain and label things “good” or “bad.” The first “problem” is good or bad for whom, the whom typically being “me.” The second is that ancient logical fallacy called argumentum ad hominem, according to Wikipedia “a rhetorical strategy where the speaker attacks the character, motive, or some other attribute of the person making an argument rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.” It often uses derogatory adjectives to more strongly sway the listener’s opinion without addressing the issue. Calling people names.

Given today’s ad hominem rich social media posts, one can imagine a future like Andrey’s where use of this logical fallacy is actually a felony, professional acronymeurs are highly prized for their ability to encapsulate an issue or product, making it infinitely easier to talk about and much more likely to “go viral,” in her case throughout the populated solar system. To be professional, one has to be paid, so in her world, whenever a registered acronym appears in general use beyond a certain threshhold, the acronymeur is paid a use royalty by the government based on its recorded appearance on the myriad audiovideo recordings from ubiquitous devices now everywhere. Why, you ask would a government care? Because in her world, language is recognized as the backbone to communication and thereby civilization. Creating acronyms that fall into common use is all about the evolving language, communication and thereby civilization. And civilization is at the very heart of government. In her world. In our world. Just beyond the edge of madness…

COVID-FOOD SYNDROME

During pre-COVID years, being largely vegetarian, an interesting phenomenon came to my attention: Fruit offered in grocery stores while becoming ever more visually appealing, was becoming increasingly odorless, tasteless (as a recognizable fruit and more bitter in general), and younger (unripe, having a remarkably shorter life before rotting at home). It came to my attention first about ten years ago, when I began having to add sugar to cut fruits, admittedly to make them taste ripe-sweet, but increasingly to cover a bitter taste. But it wasn’t until recently that all of these attributes came together to produce not just sub-standard fruit, but fruit that tasted akin to burnt or hot melting plastic.

I’ve posted frequently that COVID-19 is only the spark reveals the need to update our current infrastructures in order to survive the future. I haven’t mentioned food as much as I should have. Air, water, food, habitability (which includes a sense of safeness and security) are the four cornerstones of civilization. And each’s infrastructures needs critically examination if we are to survive as a civilized nation.

Pre-COVID, I already had concerns over GMO products, for me, primarily due to non-disclosure of what exactly the product was being altered to produce. I’m not adverse to altering a product to produce longer shelf life, more robust taste and smell, but am adverse to products designed to incorporate pesticides, for example, into the flesh of the fruit without me knowing. And I’m aware that in genetically altering foodstuffs, smell first, then taste next often succumb. Unfortunately, being visual creatures not generally allowed to “taste” fruit before buying it, consumers are vulnerable to this kind of “long con.”

I’ve heard it stated that consumers “can’t have their cake and eat it, too,” implying it’s not possible to have good tasting and smelling food with a reasonable shelf life, and, naive consumer that I am, I believed it. Until I visited Japan.

In Japan, I was orally shocked (in a very pleasant way) to taste apples that actually tasted sweet and robust like I recall apple’s tasting in the past, that would easily last a week or two at home. But it was the vegetables and fruit in general that continued to shock my tastebuds. How can Japan, by American standards, a supposed “wildly leftist socialist” country do it and we, gifted by “America First,” can’t. How can they do what a capitalistic nation can’t, or more importantly, doesn’t want to do?

We Americans have a lot at a relatively low price, but, in my opinion, increasingly at the expense of quality and safety. So, when I call for taking a critical look at our failing infrastructures, I have to include air, water, food and habitation, not just government administration, ethics, transportation, education, health care, social security, business and the obvious others.

This issue appears in my new SCI-FU (science-based futuring) novel, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor (internet search “The Edge of Madness Gaynor”), surrounding a new global drink replacing coffee, tea and cocoa. Not to reveal, it’s equally savory, bold and satisfying but much healthier and less environmentally destructive. Intrigued? A QUANTUM INTERNET?

I’ve often posted that I believe that while COVID-19 is a public if not largely political tragedy, it is the absence of relevant infrastructure that has amplified it’s affects, and desperately needs revision. So, today’s infrastructure upgrade is surrounding perhaps one of the most important elements of our future: the nervous system of America — the internet. With our current government blindsided by ethical and political problems, today’s internet has become more of a invitation to criminals than the communication backbone of our future world. One “solution” or at least upgrade would be a quantum internet.

Theoretical physicist Jonathan Dowling, in his recent book, SCHROEDINGER’S WEB (I’ve had to use the “oe” substitute for an umlaut which actually appears in the title), gives examples of quantum photonic communications that have already successfully taken place, one in 2016 between Beijing and Shanghai, the key to which is quantum entanglement in which particles are linked together over seemingly boundless time and space. That unique characteristic Einstein called “spooky action at a distance;” the perfect topic just before Halloween. Theoretically, and I believe practically-speaking as well, once entangled, communication would be at the speed of light, or possibly even faster if that’s what quantum simultaneousness is.

So what’s the “problem?” Interestingly, the problem is people, the very clients the quantum internet would seek to serve. Dowling is said to have said, “Just like the classical internet, we really won’t figure out what the quantum internet is useful for until it is up and running.” Kind of like creating new universes and black holes in laboratories. That’s not to scare, but to remind us that with increasing power comes increasingly powerful side effects, which, if we are really the rational creatures we claim, we should be well aware of. Eh? How you ask? Another new infrastructure, SCI-FU or science-based futuring a la my newest book, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor, now available at 25% off during Savant/Aignos’ PRE-HOLIDAY SALE using “HOLIDAYSALE” discount code at checkout at

WITH A. G. HAYES AND WILLIAM MALTESE

I’ve been fortunate to co-author several books with truly great authors of our time, one entitled TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2009)

Total Meltdown: A Tripler and Clarke Adventure

with the incomparable William Maltese, and the other entitled QUANTUM DEATH (Savant 2016) with the master of thrillers, A. G. Hayes. I’ve mentioned TOTAL MELTDOWN frequently as it’s the prequel to my latest release, THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor (browser search: The Edge of Madness Gaynor).

QUANTUM DEATH, the sixth in the riveting, multi-award-winning Koski & Falk Thriller series by A. G. Hayes [see THE COMPLETE KOSKI & FALK (Savant 2020) by A. G. Hayes with Raymond Gaynor for all seven works in one printed book or eBook] came about one day when A. G. and I were blue skying plot lines for a Koski and Falk adventure that included his newest character, Kate Keenan, the star of FINDING KATE (Savant 2016) in which long-ignored computer genius Kate Keenan designs a computer program that will put Hollywood and Bollywood out of business overnight. Suddenly everyone wants her…and her program. To stay alive, Kate goes into hiding, barely keeping ahead of a lethal hoard of pursuers with only one thing in mind: FINDING KATE and possessing or destroying the program. Book five in the Koski and Falk Thriller series, book one in the Kate Keenan Special Assignment series, it became the widely anticipated prequel to the award-wining sixth Koski and Falk Thriller series novel, QUANTUM DEATH by A. G. Hayes and Raymond Gaynor.

The “problem” it turned out wasn’t the plot in which “Koski and Falk come up against what very well may prove to be their most complex and dangerous case yet: The Quantum Death Machine. For the first time, Koski and Falk must separate during a mission. Each faces mortal peril, while, at the same time, their smoldering relationship begins to heat up.” The problem was the second woman, Kate Keenan, who, from the previous book, FINDING KATE, had developed her own crush on Joesph Falk, and what to do about it.

Without creating a spoiler, suffice it to say that the three protagonists eventually figure out how quantum events were destroying digital devices throughout USA, why, at the same time, a particular criminal party was selling off chunks of the USA in repeated bitcoin auctions,
who was ultimately behind the events, and what to do about it. Most importantly, at the end, Keenan finally confronts Koski over their mutual feelings for Falk, forcing Koski to rethink her feelings for her long time partner, Falk.

The challenge was how to handle the love triangle, and it took many late night discussions to decide the outcome. Have I piqued your interest? Hope so, because QUANTUM DEATH is one of my personal favorites.

WHERE ARE THE INFRASTRUCTURES WE SO NEED?

It’s been an interesting week, and it’s barely half through. Interesting because of events that all speak to the primary need of our nation to critically review, update and replace outdated infrastructures, so we can begin living in a world where pandemics and disasters can no longer control our lives and vitality. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not advocating a “return to normal.” Never, as that would leave our nation standing on the railroad tracks facing the next of many future oncoming trains!

I’m advocating using conscious utilitarian rationalism tempered by empathy, to reconstruct a new nation based on better infrastructures in government administration, ethics, education, transportation, communication, public health, individual health care, social services, business and, yes, even religion. Can’t imagine? Try THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020) by Raymond Gaynor, the first publisher-identified SCI-FU (science-based futuring) genre novel of it’s kind. Walk boldly where no one has gone before and begin deciding on the world you want and the needed infrastructures to bring it about.

The Edge of Madness

Taking up where TOTAL MELTDOWN (Borgo/Wildside 2009) by Raymond Gaynor and William Maltese left off, NewAmerica, a shadow of its former United States of America, provides a challenging and dangerous future place for three young firebrands [and readers] to live.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TOUCH

In this day of mid-pandemic crisis, with the sine qua non being social distancing, it’s easy to forget how important touch is to humans as it is to all of the many social animals. In essence, touch is everything. During these difficult times, I’m reminded that a simple character change, like a DNA mutation, has changed “touch” into “tough,” a situation that’s definitely not good when everyone seems to be suffering from chronic stress (skin-to-skin contact, or touch, being one of a few chronic stress destressors).

So, what does one do if there’s a “no touch” social distance rule in place? One can certainly “do a Trump,” ignore the rule and take the consequences. It’s hard to ignore this solution when the president of the United States of America does it, and does it flagrantly. However, touch is touch. So, while the laying on of [another person’s] hands is more to be desired, the laying on of one’s own hands is a reasonable substitute. Self-massage helps keep one “in one’s body” during a time when chronic stress tends to direct otherwise. Couple that with deep, slow, “belly” breathing, a few moments of half-closed-eye-meditation, and a positive self-comment, and the result can be quite satisfying.

While I don’t talk of this specifically in THE EDGE OF MADNESS (Aignos 2020; https://www.amazon.com/dp/0999693859), it’s implicit in a SCI-FU world where things are in constant change, the best touch being that of a trusted, loved person as that which Draff Rob Brie [Septican-Smite] enjoys from both Simi Andry Jan [Jan-Rho] with her dark-roasted cappuccino brown hair reaching silkily down to her waist, her thin but soft face and light brown eyes glowing in a rainbow of chocolate browns. and Billie Frann Frank {Tordon-Cass], with his attractively muscled Olympian physique, jet black Grecian curls crowning his darkly-tanned, swarthy face with its angular cheek bones and solid, almost imperceptibly dimpled chin. Who wouldn’t find solace and succor from either?
