So this one's a goodie. It's a video. Shot last night. And Laura's a bit worse for the wear. But she didn't get to do her reading and we all know how much Laura loves to read books out loud. It's the teacher in her.

The Top Five Things We Learned This Week

1. We are easily distracted by pretty things. Like these book covers. Ooh, shiny. We're DYING to read all of these books.
Audition by Stasia Kehoe
Shut Out by Kody Keplinger
The Pledge by Kimberly Derting

2. The Liar Society was #87* on Amazon**
*...in kindle, childrens, p&p, social issues, being a teen.
**...from 3:08 PM to 3:21 PM on Thursday March 3rd.

3. Children under the age of 5 really don't give a crap that their moms are officially published authors. Lydia puked all over Laura twice this week and Jack repeatedly told me that I'm an imbecile and he wishes he had a new mommy. I bet J.K. Rowling doesn't have to put up with this crap.

4. Laura's newfound pastime is plugging random numbers in Barnes and Noble's online store search to see if they're stocking The Liar Society. At first I didn't understand why she was calling me and leaving random city names on my voicemail, but I finally caught on. FYI the book is in stock in Clearwater, Florida.

5. We're overthankers. We literally can't stop thanking people for all the support they're showing for The Liar Society. We never in a million years dreamed that so many people would rally behind us to help make this book a success. So we're thanking you. Again. Sorry. That's just how we roll.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone and don't forget to stop back on Monday for The Liar Society's virtual launch party. There will be humiliating footage from our actual launch party and (of course) prizes. Get excited.

Bookinistas: THE RENDERING by Joel Naftali

I'm not gonna lie. I don't read a ton of middle grade (anymore) and not a whole lot of boy books, so, I'm not sure I would have picked up THE RENDERING if it weren't for the Bookinistas. But I'm so glad I did. This book made me want to shimmy my way back into a 6th grade classroom, book in hand. And trust me. That's not something I say every day.

Here's what the back cover has to say:

Thirteen-year-old Doug narrates in a series of blog posts (many interrupted by either his best friend, smart girl Jamie, or the artificial intelligence who mothers him, the avatar) how he came to temporarily save the world and to be branded a terrorist and a murderer. He was innocently playing video games in the employee lounge of the biotechnology center where his aunt was a director when an insane genius ex-employee broke in, stole the equipment to digitize anyone and make his own biodroid army, killed Doug's aunt, and blew up the center (and soon the nearby town). Doug managed to escape, accidentally creating three super-powered creatures, and gaining a electronics-destroying superpower of his own with which to fight the evil Dr. Roach.

Lila's Take:

The first thing I noticed about this book was the unique formatting. Naftali and Egmont did incredible things with the text. At one point, there's an explosion. Doug describes the floor falling out beneath him--the text mirrors this giving the book a very visual feel. Another example is during the aftermath of the explosion. Doug feels himself slipping away and says everything is fading, fading, fading, etc. With each "fading" the text gets lighter and lighter, fading away. And there's more. A lot more. It's so freaking cool.

Moving on to premise. On page one we learn that Doug is wanted for the murder of his aunt. And that he's changed his name and is in hiding. Who wouldn't want to read on to figure out what really happened? What a hook! And the story does not disappoint. Doug, the main character, addresses the audience through his blog, so we become his blog readers. I think this is unique, catchy and current (considering so many kids are blogging these days!) It also invests you in the story. An evil man is trying to take over the world (using all sorts of crazy technology) and you're apart of that world because you're a blog reader. It's very cool. The chapters are also super-short, which I always appreciate because my "I'll just read one more" turns into five, six, seven more and for younger kids with a shorter attention span, this is key. The book is well-paced and full of adventure. The story moves.

Next up, voice. Doug is hilarious. His voice jumps off the page and I found myself laughing out loud. I enjoyed the chemistry between he and his best girlfriend and the relationship he shared with his aunt. She interrupts his blog posts throughout and they share funny asides. And then you have the CyberSkunks. That's right, armor-wearing, leather-clad, mohawked skunk-people. And they're hilarious.

Basically, THE RENDERING is the book of every awkward, fidgety, bored, video-game-obsessed middle school boy's dreams. If only I had this little gem during those long and painful monitored reading sessions in the classroom where instead of reading, some boys stuck pieces of paper in girls' hair or sharpened their pencils ten million times. It would have saved me a whole lot of headaches and lunch detentions.

WTF Wednesday: A Rusty Celeb Poem

Forgive me, for it's been a while.

Some time has passed, the months flew by, since our last celebrity poem. We'll do our best, we'll try, try, try,to make the celebs feel at home.
Christina's in quite a pickle, her boyfriend's DUI caused a clamor. We know it's rude to be fickle, but she passed out in the slammer.

Gwynnie often makes our shit list, she's constantly raising her nose. But Oscar Karaoke we can't resist,to the top of the happy list she goes.

Charlie Sheen just joined Twitter, his crazy will be on display. His career flushed down the shitter, another meltdown any day.

J. Biebs has turned seventeen, growing up before our eyes. Now if only he'd let us intervene,we'd baptize him with pink hair dyes.

I can't promise there will be more, these poems are a giant time suck. But the celeb mishaps galore, fit right in on our Wednesday of WTF!
PS: We're hitting up Bri Meets Books as well as The Story Siren blog today. If you're not too sick of us, check them out!

Tell The Truth Tuesday: The Official Launch Day Edition

1. Laura wanted to do a TLC's Baby Story-inspired vlog about our book's birthday. Lisa didn't think it was a good idea.

2. We're sick of hearing ourselves talk and can only imagine that all of you feel the same. For this you have our deepest apologies.

3. The Blog Tour of Awesome kicks off today for The Liar Society. We're giving away a $100 Amazon gift card and some other cool stuff. There are some AMAZING bloggers involved, but we don't want to talk about it too much. See #2.

4. Our author copies arrived in the nick of time and we spent all yesterday petting them. It's not nearly as gross as it sounds.

5. Despite the fact that we're thanking our lucky stars to see our book in print, we have to admit we're bummed that only one Barnes and Noble near us is stocking it. Mostly because it leads to conversations like this:

Aunt Mildred: I can't wait to buy your book at Barnes and Noble on March 1st.
LiLa: Oh, yeah...about that. You should probably call first.
Auntie M: Why? Your book is being published isn't it?
LiLa: Yeah, but it's really hard for debut authors to get stocked at chains...
Auntie M: So your book isn't being published?
LiLa: No, it totally IS being published...
Auntie M: Well, then, I'll just go pick up my copy.
LiLa: Maybe just call first. There aren't going to be copies at every single store and they can always order...
Auntie M: You've made this all up haven't you? I always knew you were a couple of liars. Or maybe this is some kind of prolonged fantasy you two have dreamed up. I'm calling your mother!
LiLa: Crap.

6. If we really sit back and think about the fact that our first novel officially releases today and about how far we've come since this post we get all weepy. The truth is, we can't believe how lucky we are that right now, in this moment, we're living our dream. And even better we get to share it with all of these amazing, supportive people we have in our lives.

Thank you for believing in us and our little book.
Thank you for laughing with us, bitching with us and (most of all) hating Gwynnie with us.
Thank you for being there every step of the way so we never, ever felt like we were on this crazy roller coaster alone.

We love you all!

Ok, your turn. What's your truth this Tuesday?

Five Things We Learned This Week

1. Christine Fonseca is about a million times smarter than we are. The jury is still out on whether or not our children are gifted (although they're quite gifted in their consumption of snacks and requests for an endless supply of cartoons), but that's the best part about Christine's book. All of her research can be applied to children in general. It is quite handy actually. Just look at the reviews!

2. We have fan girls. Hot, talented, fan girls. We can now die happy.

3. Our world has been pinkified. How can we ever thank all of you? Your support is so incredibly amazing. We're seriously at a loss.

4. Laura is still the master of all things poetry. Check out Karsten Knight's contest. She enjoyed spreading her rhyming wings once again. After things settle down, I'm demanding she reinstate her celebrity-inspired poems.

5. Our family and friends are offering an endless supply of support up in here (yeah, you have to sing that last part). A friend dropped off matching pink, crystal pens for the signing, our Grandma made dozens of pink and pearl cookies, our Grandpa is reading the book, blog readers are driving in for the launch, people are reaching out to local schools and art centers and newspapers and, and, and...it's overwhelming. We're emotional and nervous and excited and thankful.

So, so thankful.
