Myth, 49

~ God Will Solve Your Problems ~
Mixed Truth  ~  In this life on earth this is a myth.  Ultimately, the Christian will be rid of all problems when they live eternally with their Savior in heaven.  “Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.  Also there was no more sea.  Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people.  God Himself will be with them and be their God.  And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away’” (Revelation 21:1-4).
Reality #1  ~  We now live in a fallen world.  That is true for both the Christian and the pre-Christian.  Jesus put it this way, “You may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45).
Reality #2  ~  Some problems we experience are the result of our poor choices or actions.  There are consequences (good and bad) for the decisions we make.  “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.  For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life” (Galatians 6:7-8).  “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6).
Reality #3  ~  Because you are following Christ you can expect problems.  “But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra — what persecutions I endured.  And out of them all the Lord delivered me.  Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:10-12).  “Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy.  If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.  On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified” (1 Peter 4:12-14).

Fear God, 173

~ Those Who Fear God Receive His Mercy ~
God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “ fear God .”
This Week’s Passage  ~  “And Mary said: ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.  For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.  For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.  And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.  He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.  He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted the lowly.  He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty.  He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy, as He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed forever’” (Luke 1:46-55).
Fearing God Results in Salvation  ~  “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).  “A wise person fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident” (Proverbs 14:16).  This does not mean the Christian is to live a fearful life—but a life which reverences God and seeks to do His will.
Fearing God Results in Fearlessness  ~  “The Lordis my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lordis the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).  The answer is: only God.  With the gift of salvation comes responsibility.
Fearing God Results in Witnessing  ~  “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16).

Paul Did

~ What Did the Apostle Paul Do? ~
A Key Passage  ~  “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I havefought the good fight, I havefinished the race, I have kept the faith.  Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
Comment  ~  Activity and works are meaningless unless they are a result of faith in God.  “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).
The Key (not to be missed)  ~  The obvious question arises: How does one obtain a meaningful faith?  “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).  Time in the Word of God and honest searching before Him develops our faith.
This post is in the same format as the previous ALN post “Christ Did” (What Has Christ Done?) posted on June 11, 2017.

The Law: Questions, 21of25

~ Did Paul Declare That The Law Was Done Away With? ~
Scripture  ~  The Apostle Paul wrote, “But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious?  For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.  For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels.  For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious” (2 Corinthians 3:7-11).
Additional Scripture  ~  “Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.  For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.  But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter” (Romans 7:4-6).
Reference  ~  You may be interested in a previous “Abundant Life Now” 14 post series entitled “10 Commandments Today” (from March 1 to June 28, 2018).  The Key Passage in this series is: “Do not think that I [Jesus Christ] came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.  I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).

O.T. Shepherds, 3of6

~ Joseph: An Exalted Shepherd ~
Series Prologue  ~  There are at least five Old Testament shepherds who were clear “types” of Jesus Christ—our shepherd.  A typeis like a faint image or shadow of the true item.  In each of these cases we can see parallels to our Great Shepherd.
Sample Scripture  ~  “Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers.  And the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.  Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age.  Also he made him a tunic of many colors.  But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.  Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more” (Genesis 37:2-5).
“So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.  …  And his brothers envied him, but his father kept the matter in mind.”  Then his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.  And Israel said to Joseph, ‘Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem?  Come, I will send you to them.’  So he said to him, ‘Here I am.’  Then he said to him, ‘Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.’  So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem.  Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field.  And the man asked him, saying, ‘What are you seeking?’  So he said, ‘I am seeking my brothers.  Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks.’  And the man said, ‘They have departed from here, for I heard them say, “Let us go to Dothan.”’  So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.  Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him.  Then they said to one another, ‘Look, this dreamer is coming!  Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, “Some wild beast has devoured him.”  We shall see what will become of his dreams!’  But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, ‘Let us not kill him.’  And Reuben said to them, ‘Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him’ — that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.  So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him.  Then they took him and cast him into a pit.  And the pit was empty; there was no water in it” (Genesis 37:8b, 11-24).

“Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver.  And they took Joseph to Egypt” (Genesis 37:28).
“So when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread.  Then Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, ‘Go to Joseph; whatever he says to you, do.’  The famine was over all the face of the earth, and Joseph opened all the storehousesand sold to the Egyptians.  And the famine became severe in the land of Egypt.  So all countries came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all lands” (Genesis 41:55-57).
Hints Of The Coming Messiah  ~  Joseph is the exalted shepherd who in spite of being rejected by his own brethren would become the savior of all mankind.
Joseph was hated by his own brethren. Joseph was thought to have been killed. Joseph was banished to a far country. Joseph was eventually exalted to the throne. He obtained a Gentile bride.
Joseph redeemed his own brethren who had betrayed him.
Comment  ~  It is an rewarding effort to read the story of Joseph (Genesis 30:24—50:26) and make a list of parallels between Joseph and Jesus Christ.

We Are All Terminal

~ Remember Those Who Have Gone Before; But Prepare To Follow ~
The Christian (be confident of this)  ~  We are born into a life in the land of the dying — we die into the land of the living.
“My friend’s body lay peacefully — for a time.  Soon enough, it would decay and the physical would disappear.  But his soul and his spirit—the real person—were still intact and very much alive.   They had clearly departed to another place.  I knew without a doubt where my friend had gone.  Those who believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, have the joy of entering immediately into heaven” (2 Corinthians 5:8).    Luis Palau (Changed by Faith, page 110).
“The best moment of a Christian’s life is his last one, because it is the one that is nearest heaven.”   Charles Haddon Spurgeon (The Prince of Preachers)
The Pre-Christian (carefully consider this)  ~  On the cross, Jesus of Nazareth faced physical death, what the Bible calls “the last enemy” (1 Corinthians 15:26).
“Through one man [Adam] sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned” (Romans 5:12).
“But the fact is that Christ did actually rise from the dead and has become the first of millions who will come back to life again someday.  Death came into the world because of what one man (Adam) did, and it is because of what this other man (Christ) has done that now there is the resurrection from the dead.  Everyone dies because all of us are related to Adam, being members of his sinful race, and wherever there is sin, death results.  But all who are related to Christ will rise again.  Each, however, in his own turn: Christ rose first; then when Christ comes back, all his people will become alive again” (1 Corinthians 15:20-23, tlb).
Key Question  ~  Are you one who can confidently say, “I am related to Christ”?

God Is My… (Psalms), 13

~ God Is My Shepherd ~
Introduction  ~  Previously from July 16, 2017 through January 6, 2019 ALN posted a series of 60 posts of “Jesus is…,” and now we look exclusively at who “God is…” from the Book of Psalms.  While not a complete list these posts occur are in the same order they are in the Psalms.
Passage  ~  “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.  He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake” (Psalm 23:1-3).
Significance  ~  This is probably the best known complete chapter in the Bible.  Shepherds provide for all the needs of the sheep.  Christ provides for all the needs of His people.
Comment  ~  Abundant Life Now has previously published at least four posts about Psalm 23.  One in particular “Where is your God? – 2 of 2” is worth your review in regards to how our Great Shepherd provides for us (and surrounds us with His love).

Myth, 48

~ There Is No God ~
Opening Comment  ~  This is the most foolish position any person can take.  “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1a, 53:1a).  “Even the demons believe — and tremble!” (James 2:19b).
Interesting Scripture  ~  The natural world of the Creator is enough for any thinking person to believe in God.  “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.  For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkenedProfessing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man — and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things” (Romans 1:18-23).
Think About It  ~  What rational person could believe that an unabridged dictionary could start production following a massive explosion in a print shop?  Or how about the complexity of this universe resulting from a “Big Bang” that started with no raw materials?
Conclusion  ~  There is no way I could muster up the amount of faith it would take to be an atheist!

Fear God, 172

~ Zacharias Feared God’s Angel ~
God does not want His children living in fear.  “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:2-3).  However, God does want His children to have a proper respect and reverence for Him.  We are told in many places in Scripture to “ fear God .”
This Week’s Passage  ~  “There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah.  His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.  And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.  But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.  So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division, according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.  And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.  Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.  And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him” (Luke 1:5-12).
Comment  ~

Calling Paul

~ The Trinity Was Involved in Paul’s Calls ~
Consider  ~  Paul was called to be separated to and for God.  “Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.  Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ” (Romans 1:1-6).  Paul was called on three times at three distinct events, and all three members of the Trinity were involved.
Called at His Birth (by the divine purpose of God, The Father)  ~  “But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went to Arabia, and returned again to Damascus” (Galatians 1:15-17).
Called at His Conversion (by the glorified Savior in heaven)  ~  “So the Lord said to him, ‘Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying.  And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight.’  Then Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem.  And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.’  But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.  For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake.’  And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’  Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized” (Acts 9:11-18).
Called to the Work of Evangelism (by the Spirit of God for evangelism) ~  “Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.  As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’  Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away” (Acts 13:1-3).
Closing Questions  ~  Have you been called to Christ.  Are you being called right now?  Are you fulfilling your divinely appointed calling?
