Southern BoundHey folks! I hope you’ve all had a great summer. If you’ve missed it, I’ve been putting some of my ebooks on surprise sales all summer long and today begins my last one! Southern Bound, the first in my Max Porter Paranormal-Mystery series is now on sale at Amazon for only $0.99!

The book is about a man who discovers his North Carolina office is haunted by the ghost of a 1940s detective. I take real history of North Carolina and mix it with ghosts, witches, curses, spells, and more. The series is a lot of fun and I think you’ll agree that spending time with Max is worthwhile. And since I’m researching the 4th book in the series, now is a perfect time to get started.

Southern Bound – Now in Audiobook!

That’s right, folks.  The first book in the Max Porter Paranormal Mystery series is now available as an audiobook.  I do the narration, so if you’ve ever listened to The Eclectic Review podcast, then you already know what I sound like.  The audiobook runs a bit over 6 hours and is lots of fun.

Southern Bound

It was supposed to be a new beginning – good job, good pay, and a lovely home in North Carolina.
But when Max Porter discovers his office is haunted by the ghost of a 1940s detective, he is thrust neck-deep into a world of old mysteries and dangerous enemies.

One in which ghosts, witches, curses, and spells exist. One in which a simple research job can turn deadly.

Throwback Thursday – The Way of the Black Beast only $.99!

Malja 1 resizedThe latest installment of The Malja Chronicles, Book 5 of my post-apocalyptic Fantasy series is off to a good start. Writing The Way of the Power is drawing me right back into the thick of things. I got to write Malja’s first fight scene in the book and that always sucks me right back into her crazy post-apocalyptic head as she now travels across parallel universes. Am having lots of fun writing Malja’s story again and I just can’t keep it all to myself. If you haven’t read any of the series yet, now’s the perfect time to get involved in the action-packed world of Malja and her friends. I really believe that you are missing out.

When I originally began writing about Malja in 2010, I had no clue that I’d be working on the fifth novel in the Fantasy series four years later. Book 1, The Way of the Black Beast, is the one that started it all. In a world where magic caused the apocalypse, Malja struggles to survive against crazed magicians, mutated beasts, and guitar-playing assassins. She seeks to understand why she was stolen as a baby, trained only to fight, and discarded at ten-years-old — all at the hands of the two most powerful magicians. But her quest for answers fights with her desire for vengeance — a battle within that may destroy all she holds dear. Starting today, on Throwback Thursday, you can pick up the first of The Malja Chronicles for pennies!

The Deal & The Links

Surprise! Starting today, you can get the first Malja book, The Way of the Black Beast, at Amazon and B&N.com for only $0.99! Like, Share, and Spread the Sci-Fi Fantasy steal wherever you may roam (cue Metallica music). The sale lasts until June 29th (my birthday). Enjoy!

B&N

What Readers Are Saying About Malja:

Malja is a girl just trying to survive in a dangerous world that has been decimated by magic, and where violence is a necessary evil. Throughout her journey she keeps two things close to her: Viper, a straight edge, deadly extension of herself used to destroy anything that might bring harm, and Tommy, the adolescent youth/ magician who attached himself to her side after she saved him from his abusers.

And…. Stuart Jaffe did it again! From the opening sentences, his writing has a way of drawing you – the reader – in and making you thirst for more and more. ” The Way of the Black Beast” is another example of excellent science fiction genre and I laud Jaffe for his passion and his way of making it all seem so….normal!

Thanks for all of you who take the plunge into Malja’s fantastical parallel world. Would love to hear back from—Please share this deal and leave comments below with any penetrating questions or brilliant insights! J Tired of talking to myself here.

Now, It’s Your Turn: What’s Happening in Your World?

Malja 1 resizedThis week I thought I’d do something completely different and turn the tables on you. Since I’m working on the fifth book in my post-apocalyptic Fantasy series The Malja Chronicles, I’ve had the business of world-building on my mind. You may not know this but, all year long I attend various Science Fiction and Fantasy conventions and I’m often asked to serve on panels about the craft of world building.

I always enjoy sharing my experience as an Indie Author as well as advice about writing and creating fantastical worlds. I often learn as much as I share at these things. When I meet new and upcoming authors, especially those writing in the Science Fiction, YA, and Fantasy genres, I’m almost always struck by your enthusiasm and curiosity. So I decided that we should tap into that enthusiasm with this little challenge!

I’d like to get you more involved in the conversation here at stuartjaffe.com. So, I thought it would be fun to let you have your say this week. Let’s see what kind of wild here-to-for never seen worlds you’re building up in your minds when you sit down at your laptop. That is, for those of you who are inclined to share. If you’ve got a Fantasy or Sci-Fi WIP, or maybe you’d just like to flex your creative muscles in a new way, I want to take a peek over your shoulder…and, not in a creepy way. If this experiment goes well, I may do it more often.

Let’s Build Some Worlds Together

Here’s what I propose for all of my world-building brethren and sisters. Let’s have a jam session, of sorts. Call it a critique session if you like. I want to see where your imaginations are taking you. You can submit and critique, or both. But, if you submit, I feel it’s only fair that you offer some constructive feedback to the rest of the writers and try to be nice. No sniping allowed—although, I encourage you to be honest in your responses. I will moderate the session and offer some suggestions as we go. Introduce us to your world. Let your freak flag fly.

All that I ask is that you send no more than about 100 words (give or take a few), please. Now, I know what you’re thinking. There’s no way that you can create an entire world in a single paragraph. However, you ought to be able to effectively convey the essence of your fantasy world in about that much space. I’ll get you started by sharing a passage from The Way of the Black Beast, the first book in The Malja Chronicles:

Long ago, centuries maybe, before the Devastation, everybody wore such suits. The world thrived under the spell of success and civilization. Magicians provided unlimited energy, bountiful harvests, and all the raw power needed to fuel industry and technology. But some magicians grew too powerful. They abused their magic, striving to dominate people instead of helping society, seeking the secrets that might turn them into gods. And the Devastation leveled it all, casting the people into generations of scavengers and survivors. Yet another gift of the magicians.

Now, you can tell me whether or not you feel that I did a good job. Do you get a feel for the parallel world where the story takes place? Do you want to read more?

Does Everybody Get A Trophy?

Nope, everyone doesn’t get a trophy. But, I’m hoping that we’ll all come away feeling like we’ve been transported to faraway lands and uncharted terrains. Plus, one of you lucky writers will win a totally FREE copy of ebook of The Way of the Black Beast (Book 1 of The Malja Chronicles). Disclaimer:  this is a highly subjective contest and I will choose the winner based solely upon which passage I enjoy the most. Now, go forth and bare your souls, people!

Scare the Pants Off Your Kids – It’s Good for Them

Since today is Friday the 13th and, tonight, we’ve got a big full moon to help set a twitchy tone, I thought I’d take a look at scary stories. I’ve loved them since I was a kid. You know, in that attraction-repulsion kind of way. Comic artist and Horror writer, Greg Ruth, wrote a post for http://www.tor.com earlier this week that reminded me “Why Horror is Good For You (and Even Better For Your Kids)” http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/05/why-horror-is-good-for-you-and-even-better-for-your-kids. In it, Ruth makes a convincing case that the comics industry has essentially sown its own demise. And anyone would be even crazier if they had the nerve to write horror stories…for kids.

We’re Already Scared and It’s Nothing New

You see, we live in frightening times. Economically, kids live in fear—their parents will lose their jobs and they may never have real jobs of their own. That’s why fully 1/3 of them have moved back into the same bedroom they grew up in. Geo-politically, it gets even scarier—anxiety about global terrorism and wars abroad could terrify even the most stalwart among us.

But Ruth suggests, this doesn’t mean that horror as a genre doesn’t serve an invaluable, if bone-chilling purpose. Kids have always been scared. They live in a world of giants where every doorknob, every escape route, is just out of their grasp. Nothing is the right size and neither are they. Why not provide some stories that equip young people with the tools to prosper (or, at least, exist) in an uncertain landscape?

This generation of storytellers (of which I’m pretty sure I’m a part) has not only, according to Ruth, “stolen the medium away from its following generations, it has helped foster one of the greatest publishing face-plants in American history: it killed its own future by ignoring the basic need to grow a new crop of readers, and so made certain it had no future at all.” Instead, we’ve served up sanitized versions of idealized superheroes that will likely never come to the rescue.

The Exorcism of Stuart Jaffe – Thanks Mom

Thankfully my mother intervened…once. Like anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s, a sort of golden age of Horror films, I have quite a few horrifying teen moments associated with the genre. My mother was pretty cool and she didn’t routinely monitor or interfere with my viewing habits. But, she was adamant that I not see The Exorcist. Obviously, that meant I’d do whatever I could to see it.

For those of you who are too young to remember, The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin, based on a 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The book, inspired by the 1949 exorcism case of Roland Doe, deals with the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and her mother’s desperate attempts to win back her child through an exorcism conducted by two priests. Sounds innocent enough, right?

I got my chance to see this banned movie a few years later when I was away at boarding school. A buddy and I rented the contraband from our local video store (remember those?). We raced back to the school’s library and inserted the VHS tape into the enormous, by today’s standards, VCR player. It was game on! And it scared the pants off of me! I called my mother shortly thereafter and thanked her for protecting me from the crab-walking, vomit-spewing demonic possession for as long as she did.

Why I Still Think Horror Is Good For You

GlimpseCoverNew-715x1024Sure, I was wide-eyed and terrified. However, I knew that movies—no matter how realistic—weren’t real life. Seeing gore on the screen and in person are completely different things. And I believe that most kids can handle it. Further, I feel that it would be completely wrong to change the creative process to actively avoid horror, if that’s where the story takes you, because of the negative actions of a few individuals.

In my Gillian Boone novels, many readers have found specific scenes frightening, but that doesn’t mean I should change it. And if, by chance, some person is influenced to do something wrong, well, that’s the risk we take in being free to read and think and say what we want. Besides, I’ve had many other readers tell me that they found the Gillian Boone novels a great inspiration for standing up for yourself and dealing with the sudden changes life can throw at us.

What have you learned from being scared out of your wits? Would you recommend any scary stories to the kids in your life? I’d love to hear about your personal frights…Please scare in the comment section below.

The Science in the Subgenres of Science Fiction

While SciFi was originally as much science as fiction (not mention Fantasy before it broke off into a separate existence), the genre has since subdivided into dozens of subcategories, subgenres, and niches within niches. Now, I’m not implying that these permutations are a bad thing—only that I have a hard time keeping up with the numerous subgenres of Science Fiction, so I thought you guys (especially the purists out there) might, too. For new writers of the speculative fiction, it’s helpful for marketing purposes to know where your writing falls along the SciFi spectrum. Here’s my attempt at, an in no way, comprehensive roundup of Science Fiction and Fantasy subcategories, in no particular order.

Science Fiction and Fantasy Subgenres Sub-subgenres

Hard SciFi is exemplified by the classic work of Isaac Asimov and, more often than not, deals with the hard sciences (physics, chemistry, etc). Like award-winning contemporary SciFi author, Massimo Marino, this subgenre takes a scientist’s approach to Science Fiction. Massimo, who worked at CERN—an international lab for particle physics research near Geneva, Switzerland—then at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as well as with Apple Inc., has created a useful and entertaining Guide For Down-And-Dirty Hairy-Knuckled Sci-Fi Writers.

Alternate History asks questions like, “What if an historic event had turned out differently?” Harry Turtledove is a master of this subgenre; his Guns of the South asks what would have happened if the South had won the Civil War, while his World War II: In the Balance series blends alternate history with “first contact” by asking what would happen if aliens had invaded Earth during WWII.

Apocalyptic, Holocaust, and Post-Apocalyptic stories focus on the end of the world, or the world just after “the end.” In Niven and Pournelle’s Lucifer’s Hammer, society is wiped out by a comet and must rebuild; in Nevil Shute’s On the Beach, humanity is destroyed by a nuclear holocaust; in Stephen King’s The Stand, humanity must cope with the aftermath of a devastating plague. If you’ve read my Malja Chronicles, you know that Malja lives in a parallel world destroyed by the abuse of magic. She fights all odds to survive and find the answers behind her mysterious past.

Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy  - Think Charlaine Harris and Stephanie Meyer, Dead until Dark and Twilight. Think noir, paranormal and magic. At Heroes And Heartbreakers, Larissa Benoliel defines the difference between these two popular genres. Still confused? Here’s a questionnaire that will also help distinguish between ParaNormal Romance (PNR) and Urban Fantasy (UF). If you’re a fan of this subgenre, I’ll direct you to my Dark/Urban Fantasy series Gillian Boone Series. I have a feeling you’ll take more than a glimpse.

Paranormal Mystery is pretty much what it sounds like. When ghosts meet gumshoes, you can be sure you’re reading Paranormal Mystery. In my Max Porter Mysteries, you’ll meet Max who discovers that the ghost of a 1940s detective haunts his office. Whether he likes it or not, he finds himself thrust neck-deep in a world of old mysteries and dangerous enemies.

Dystopian (Especially YA) – From Hunger Games to Divergent and Susanne Collins to Veronica Roth, this is a white-hot genre. Dystopias are characterized as a society that is the opposite of utopia, a repressed, controlled, restricted system with multiple social controls put into place via government, military, or a powerful authority figure.

Steampunk features advanced machines and the technology based on the steam power from the 19th-century. Generally Steampunk takes place in a recognizable historical period or a fantasy world subculture inspired by the literature, film, or costumes of the period.James Blaylock’s Homunculus and Tim Powers’ Anubis Gates are representative.

Space Opera – like Western “horse operas,” this subgenre often involves good guys “shooting it up” with bad guys (they could be robots, aliens, or other humans) in the depths of space or on a distant planet. Space operas (of which Star Wars is a classic example – though to be extremely accurate, this series is really Science Fantasy) don’t worry about scientific impossibilities and technical explanations tend toward the vague.

Time Travel  - Again, this moniker is pretty self-explanatory. These stories involve time/space and parallel universes. Check out author Charlie Jane Anders 10 “Rules” scifi/fantasy authors should break. Anders offers insights into portal fantasies, when it’s better to tell, not show, and the possibilities of faster-than-light space travel.

Now that you’re thoroughly confused….

Accomplished SciFi/Fantasy author, Jeffrey A. Carver, a Nebula Award finalist, has created an on-line course, how to write sci fi/fantasy. Carver asserts that when it comes to Science Fiction, “there are no rules, exactly…But we do have what you might call guidelines. And that’s to have fun writing!” I couldn’t agree more.

But remember, genres and sub-genres help readers find books. And, as writers, we need to understand the conventions of our chosen genre to write satisfying fiction. Do both and it’s a win-win. Violate these conventions and you’ll likely hear about it. Not that you shouldn’t break rules.  I do it all the time.  On that note, one day I’ll tell you about the Steampunk short story I wrote, “Little Girl with Pink Ribbons.” :)

Double Takes: The Befores and Afters of Genre Superstars

It’s one thing to write a fantasy, but quite another to live one. For E. L. James, who at fifty wrote the best-selling “Fifty Shades” trilogy, her quiet West London existence has been transformed into the continent-hopping life of a famous and wealthy author. Author of the Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling, experienced a similar lifestyle upheaval when her books almost magically transformed her from a single mother living in Edinburgh, Scotland to international literary sensation in 1999. That year, the first three installments of her Harry Potter children’s book series took over the top three slots of The New York Times best-seller list after achieving similar success in her native United Kingdom.

She Wrote What? Lifting the Curtain on Gender Bias in Genre Community

The seemingly overnight nature of the notoriety for these two authors no doubt thrilled and overwhelmed them at once. But they likely weren’t prepared for routine attacks on their appearances when they weren’t deemed up to snuff. And journalists—especially those pesky British tabloids—were quick to point out when the everyday mom-next-door images of Rowling and James did not match up with their notions of what creators of magic and wizardry and so-called “mommy porn” should look like.

Both writers seemed to have taken the critiques to heart and, once famous, quickly hired a team of stylists and image experts to transform them into new versions of themselves suitable to their station in literary life. Now maybe they made these changes simply because they were in the public eye and scrutiny for the first time. Or perhaps, they would have made these investments in their appearances a long time ago if they could have afforded such luxury.

Whatever the case, it’s hard to imagine many male writers—of any genre—would feel pressure to reinvent themselves simply to be more palatable to readers. For male authors, it seems, the opposite is true – the more eccentric, the better. Imagine Stephen King getting Botox or bulking up at the gym. That just doesn’t make sense in any world. And, in the fifties, possibly the biggest nerd on the planet, playwright, Arthur Miller landed the iconic bombshell Marilyn Monroe. Go figure?

JK Rowling

J.K. Rowling — Well, the smile is the same.

EL James

E.L. James — In the beginning…

E.L. James — …and now.

Stellar Sales Translates into Celebrity Treatment

Both Rowling and James enjoyed some of the most stunning book sales in recent publishing history. The top-earning authors list is compiled annually by Forbes magazine in the US, based on best estimates using sales data, published figures and information from industry sources. Between June 2012 and June 2013, its figures show James’s supercharged erotic bestseller sold faster than any other author in history – more than 70m books in the first eight months on sale in the US.

JK Rowling’s ranking – at number 15, with earnings of £13m – is a steep comedown since the heyday of Harry Potter in 2008, when she topped the highest-earners list with sales of £170m, more than the combined annual earnings of the nine other authors on the list that year. Today, Rowling is worth more than the Queen of England.

“I never realized what this would be like,” James said in an interview last year  from London. “My ambition for these books was just to see them in book stores. Everything over that has been fantastic. But it is overwhelming.” I can imagine. Now, I have no idea how I would feel if my face were plastered all over magazine covers and billboards. After all, I’m no Brad Pitt. As a young man, I looked a bit like Steven Spielberg. Now — Ron Silver? I don’t know. But for book sales like Rowling, I’d be willing to take the heat from the press.

Guess Who I’m Meeting This Weekend?

George R.R. Martin game of thronesI’m attending the ConCarolinas this weekend in Charlotte, NC, where the decidedly eccentric looking Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin will be the Guest of Honor. I think it’s a fair guess that the portly Martin won’t give a thought to his appearance, nor will anyone else. I mean it’s hardly news when a male writer makes an appearance looking like a big geek…that’s par for the course. Like I said, I’ll be there!

What do you think about the way women authors are treated by the press? Share your thoughts in the comments section below – I’d love to get a discussion started and hear from you guys once in a while! :)

It’s a Cool, Cool Summer: Sci-Fi and Fantasy Summer Flicks

Summer 2014 is shaping up to be the summer of Sci-Fi and Fantasy films. From sequels to one-offs, moviegoers can look forward to a jam-packed season of superheroes, super-villains and special effects. So, save your pennies kids, you’re going to want to spend plenty of long hot summer days in the cool confines of your local movie theater staring up at the big screen.

Here are some of the Science Fiction and Fantasy flicks that I’m most likely to drop a dime on this summer or (considering the cost of a trip to the movies these days) 250 dimes is more like it. Time for my featured attractions:

X-Men: Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past showtimes and ticketsLet’s start with X-Men since itopens today and it’s got all the superpower and superstars that you could ask for in a Sci-Fi Fantasy action film…and then some. Starring Hollywood heavyweights Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Downey, Jr., Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart, X-Men promises to blow your mind. If the trailers are any indicator, fans of CGI and spectacular visuals will not be disappointed—you will come away with an experience to marvel at long after the curtain closes (heh, get it?  Marvel? Okay, I really didn’t intend that, but then I saw it was there).

The Synopsis: The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history. If anyone can make it happen, they can. Every hero. Every power. See them unite here: http://www.fandango.com/xmen:daysoffuturepast_159281/movieoverview

Transformers: Age of Extinction

This incarnation of The Transformers doesn’t open until the end of June, but fans of the franchise have high hopes for the Science Fiction venture starring Mark Wahlberg. A sequel to the Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which met with mixed reviews, this version is loaded with the most advanced CGI action and Wahlberg groupies can’t wait for it to hit the theaters.  When I first heard about this one, I wasn’t all that excited, but then I saw the trailer — I have to admit, I geeked out a little bit.

The Synopsis: An automobile mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings the wrath of the Autobots and Decepticons – and a paranoid government official – upon them. See what Wahlberg discovers here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S30VkLn5a2o&feature=youtu.be

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

I realize that Spidey is in theaters now; but I’ve got a feeling that he’ll be there for a while. We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most significant conflict has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2™, Peter Parker finds that a much greater battle lies ahead. The visual effects are truly amazing—and I’m not just talking about the gorgeous Emma Stone who plays love interest, Gwen.

The Synopsis: Peter Parker realizes being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. And, with the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. See how he handles the pressure here http://www.theamazingspiderman.com/site/#videos

Maleficent

Visions are seldom as they seem…For Angelina Jolie, who produced and stars as Maleficent, this is surely the case. Opening at the end May, the Fantasy film explores the untold story of Disney’s iconic villain from Sleeping Beauty and the elements of betrayal that ultimately turned her heart to pure stone. In this tale of revenge and power lust, enhanced by otherworldly fantastical imagery, Maleficent learns her curse will last until the end of time.

The Synopsis: Driven by a fierce desire to maintain her control of the moon over which she presides, Maleficent places a curse on the king’s daughter, Aurora. Only then does she realize that Aurora holds the key to her fortune as well. Watch Jolie play Maleficent to spectacularly evil effect here http://movies.disney.com/maleficent/video

The Edge of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow Movie PosterNow this action-packed, smash-em-up Sci-Fi Fantasy flick has not gotten much hype which is surprising considering it stars Tom Cruise and is from the director of The Bourne Identity. The epic action of Edge of Tomorrow unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Co-star Emily Blunt, calls them “an organism.” This may sound like a movie you’ve seen many times before, but this time there’s a twist. Coming to theaters in June, this is not your typical alien invasion Science Fiction movie.  Best of all, I’m 99.999999% sure this is based on the Japanese novel, All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. This is an awesome book, and if the movie is half as good, it’ll be great. Not sure why they haven’t mentioned this book in any interviews I’ve read, but check out the description on Amazon and see for yourself.

The Synopsis: Major Cage finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over an over, fighting and dying again…and again. #livedierepeat Check out the Cruise trying to make sense of it all here http://www.edgeoftomorrowmovie.com/videos.php

We’ve reached the end of the previews and coming attractions. As you can see, there’s absolutely no reason for you whine about being hot and bored this summer. With all of these badass Science Fiction and Fantasy films to entertain us this summer, I’d hit the dark cool movie theater over the sticky sandy beach anytime. Oh and you might want to get your tickets in advance—looks like you won’t be alone.

Which Science Fiction and Fantasy Films have you on the edge of your seat waiting for opening day? Please share them with me in the comment section below.

Once you’ve given A Glimpse of Her Soul a read. I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments on Gillian and her world. And, perhaps, you’ll feel inclined to pick up the next book in the series, A Pathway to Spirit. I hope you thoroughly enjoy the free ebook… Read and prosper!
