Your Nail Polish Isn't Supposed to Match Your Hair?

Call me the Giver of Bad Gifts. I don't mind. I know it's true.I love buying things for my girl--little things, big things, gestures, necessities. I can recall buying Sweet everything from jewellery to light bulbs. In the end, I just want to make her smile and feel appreciated, feel special. I want to show her she has a girlfriend who listens when she says something like, "Damn, the little lightbulb in my fridge just burnt out."
Here's the problem with the whole gift-giving situation: I have really bad taste. I'm talking super-craptacular taste in fashion. I don't have an eye for that stuff. I don't care what I look like. I'll wear clothes full of holes as long as they're comfortable--it really makes no difference to me. I don't wear makeup except by force, and I don't know a thing about colour co-ordination and all that. I don't even know how to put on eye shadow, despite having watched Sweet do it a hundred time. When it comes to fashion, style, and cosmetics stuff, I'm an absolute dunce. Seriously.
And here's a little exchange to showcases my point:
Me: I picked you up a little something. Nail polish--that fancy brand you like.
Sweet (looking at the bottle): Oh... thanks..?
Me: I bought you this one because I figured it would match your hair colour.
Sweet (still looking at the bottle): O...kay... yeah, it does...
(long pause)
Me (finally clueing in): Nail polish isn't supposed to match your hair colour, is it?
Sweet: Uhhmmm... no.

The sucky thing is that I try. I really do. When I picked out that nail polish for Sweet, I put a lot of thought into my choice. I lined up a bunch of different colours, I narrowed my selection down, looked at them from different angles. There was solid reasoning behind my pick, but...just... fail. Epic fail.
Sometimes I feel like a typical run-of-the-mill "dumb guy"--the kind of guy women tear to shreds because they're just so stupid and "Why don't they get it?" and "It's really not all that complicated." But you know what? Arbitrary fashion rules (and other rules) are complicated when you don't know what you're doing. My intentions are totally there, but I just don't understand a lot of the things my girlfriend likes well enough to go out and purchase something awesome for her. I fail epically every time I try to give her something fashionable.
But I'm learning. Slowly. Slowly like... soil erosion... In the meantime, it sucks to be so off-base. Oh well. The thought's there, and I know I get points for effort. (And points=sex stuff, so I really can't complain LOL)

Quick Six TNG with Desmond Haas

Sorry I'm a little late getting today's Quick Six TNG up. I was side-tracked by the federal election here in Canada. Looks like 4 more years of Helmet-Head the Automaton, but at least we've finally elected the leader of the Green Party into parliament. Maybe she will actually get to speak the next time there's a debate!
Anyway, enough with Canadian politics (though they are a blast). Here's your Quick Six with Desmond Haas!
[image error]1. What does "vanilla" mean to you?

When I think of Vanilla, I think of an excellent spice, used in cooking and desserts. I also think of heterosexual, missionary sex.

2. Is there any moment from your life that you remember in slow motion?

One moment I still have etched deep within me is the birth of my son, 18 years ago, and the events immediately after, especially when his eyes connected with mine.

3. What's the most unsettling movie you've ever seen?

The first Aliens movie unsettled me. Since then, I haven't been emotionally challenged by a movie.

4. If you had to get a tattoo on your face, what would you want it to look like?

In small print: You're inside my personal space.

5. How many monkeys jumping on the bed?

Seven, the other five are in the kitchen making me dinner.

6. Which of the books or stories you've written is your favourite?

My favorite book, so far, is Moving Forward (Amazon: http://rrn.me/gDq0rz).

Blurb:

Amanda Cooper, scarred from burns received in a car accident, runs into her high school sweetheart, while vacationing in the Bahamas. She keeps him at arms length, not ready to open herself to any intimacy because of her history of failed relationships and also because of her disfigurement. Eric, however, wants to rekindle what they once had.ten years ago.

Meanwhile, someone has been sending her threatening letters, telling her to burn in Hell. Will she escape whoever is stalking her and will Eric convince her he sees her beauty beyond the scars?

Excerpt:
He swerved to avoid the car coming at him, lost control, skidded back into his lane and side-swiped another car, sending their car careening back across the pavement, spinning out of control. Amanda saw the lights looming beyond Jeffrey's head a split second before the pickup truck hit the side of the car.

She opened her eyes and brought her hand to her forehead, wiping whatever was dripping into her eyes. Pulling her hand down, she looked and saw her fingers covered in blood. The clicking of the cooling engine got her attention and she looked towards Jeffrey, he rolled his head back and forth.

Amanda heard a whoosh and saw the fireball bloom over the front of the car, the flames rushing at her through the broken windshield and fire seeping from under the dashboard. The flames grew quickly, leaping towards her. She screamed, first holding her hands over her face, then trying to brush the flames licking at her, trying to extinguish them. "Help me! Oh, God, please help me!" she cried.

She felt the heat and watched her dress melt onto her skin. Amanda screamed, now continuously, as she panicked and tried to remove her seatbelt, but failing to find the latch. She pulled at the belt across her chest and it locked tighter. The glass next to her head suddenly exploded inward, followed by a hand reaching for her. In her panic, she fought the hand and then her rescuer crawled partially through her window, undid her seat belt, dragging her back through the window and away from the car.

"Jeffrey…Get Jeffrey!" she yelled. Amanda heard him screaming, the car now fully engulfed in flames and then, mercifully, she heard only the sound of the fire.

Quick Six TNG with R. Ann Siracusa

Who have we got on the blog today? Why, it's author R. Ann Siracusa!

1. What does "vanilla" mean to you?

Ice Cream (my weakness – or at least one of them in the sweets category). Technically, it's an extract from tropical vines which are in the orchid family, V. planifolia, prepared from the seedpods, but I relate it to an off-white color and to being bland or boring.

2. Is there any moment from your life that you remember in slow motion?

Maybe a couple . . . embarrassing moments. The worst was the time, when I was Planning Director for Fresno County, that I fell off the raised dais (I simply forgot there was a step there and missed it) onto my face in front of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors, cameras from five TV stations, and an audience of about three hundred people, all angry at the Planning Department.

3. What's the most unsettling movie you've ever seen?

It's hard to pin point the most unsettling, since there have been a lot of them. The 1960 movie Psycho with Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh made a lasting impression on me at the age I that saw it. Silence of the Lambs was another. The 1973 movie Soylent Green with Charlton Heston. Recently, I'd say Cape Fear, Orphan and, for entirely different reasons, Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ.

4. If you had to get a tattoo on your face, what would you want it to look like?

I have tattoos on my face already. They're called eyebrows and eyeliner. Lip liner would be good.

5. How many monkeys jumping on the bed?

At least three, but not more than six. Twelve? Well, I liked the movie.

6. Which of the books or stories you've written is your favourite?

The book of my heart is the first one, Family Secrets: A Vengeance of Tears, but the second book in my Tour Director Extraordinaire series, All For A Fist Full of Ashes, was the most fun to write. I'd written the first novel of the series as a one-shot experiment to see if I could write humor and in first person. I never intended to write a series. But I felt comfortable with the voice and fell in love with the characters.

The second novel came about because I was planning a trip to Italy with thirteen members of my extended Italian-American family, including two of my grandchildren. Knowing these people and the way Italians make group decisions, the trip was going to be a predictable disaster, so I figured I should at least get material for a book out of it. A group of Italian-Americans taking a tour of Italy was a natural for Harriet Ruby, my tour director extraordinaire from the first book . And if Harriet was in it, she needed her spy-boyfriend, Will Talbot, on the trip. And in addition to the developing relationship between Will and Harriet, he needed a spy story and a villain to chase after. So I came up with a story idea, did an outline, and wrote the first three chapters before I took the family trip. And, as you can imagine, the real trip provided many incidents that spiced up the novel.

Blurb

I'm Harriet Ruby: Tour Director Extraordinaire. At least, I thought I was worthy of that title until . . .

My first mistake: Agreeing to conduct a private tour of Italy. Fourteen Italian-Americans from New Jersey? All family, for three weeks, with four teenagers? What was I thinking? Fate responds to my engraved invitation by placing one of the family under surveillance as a suspect in an assassination plot, and who is assigned to the case? None other than my favorite drop-dead-gorgeous spy, Will Talbot.

My second mistake: Allowing Will to coax an invitation from the family matriarch to join the tour.

And that was just the beginning: The matriarch, searching for the unknown location of her mother's grave so she can bury her brother's cremated ashes (which have been smuggled into Italy wrapped in Cuban cigars), and her quirky family members sweep through Italy leaving chaos, hilarity, and danger in their wake.

Giselle Renarde's 1st Novel is "Anonymous"

Anonymous
by Giselle Renarde

Hannah and her husband Nathaniel have always shared one particular fantasy—he wants to make love with another man, and she wants to watch.

When Hannah loses her job to a crumbling economy, she soon finds that an idle mind is indeed "the devil's playground." She latches onto the delectably naughty idea of bringing a third into the bedroom, but inviting a man they both know to join them could have far-reaching negative consequences. What they need is someone else. Someone anonymous.

After a hot night of ménage sex with a stunning escort, Hannah becomes obsessed with finding out the identity of their mystery male. Even when Nathaniel unexpectedly introduces another vibrant young man into their relationship, Hannah remains possessed by her fixation.

To what lengths will Hannah go to discover the real identity of "Mr. Anonymous?"

Genres: Contemporary / The Arts / Ménage (M/M/F) / Group Sex / Bisexual (M/M) Content / Interracial / Multicultural / Voyeurism
Heat Level: 3
Length: Novel (57k words / TBD paperback pages)

Read a short excerpt...

..."I want to suck another man's cock," he said.

She smiled. "I want to watch you."

"I bet you do."

After setting her glass down on the coffee table, Hannah crossed her bare legs over her husband's lap and laughed. "I can't believe we're talking like this. It's so naughty!"

She ran her fingers down the front of his already unbuttoned shirt and leaned in to kiss his neck. He smelled like wet pine after coming in from the rain. She kissed him again, kissed his cheek this time. Every peck left a pink mark on his flesh. Tonight, she'd paint him with lipstick. Her lips would be her brush, and his skin her canvas. She'd been waiting all day, and now this dirty talk was gearing her up for an evening to remember.

"Sorry again about dinner," she said with a deliberate pout.

Nathaniel shrugged. "Hey, it's not your fault the power went out. I wasn't all that hungry anyway." Leaning toward the coffee table, he stacked some cheese onto a cracker and popped it in his mouth. Hannah felt awful that finger food was the best she could do after promising him a meal to die for. She nuzzled his chest as he chewed. From the time he'd walked through the door, she suspected it wasn't food Nathaniel had on his mind. Her husband wasn't usually a dirty talker, but he'd sure gotten into it tonight. Maybe it was the candles. The whole atmosphere of the power outage fostered creativity.

"What else do you want?" she asked. "If we had another man here right now, what would you do to him?"

Nathaniel made an Mmm sound deep in his throat as Hannah pulled his shirttails from his navy blue trousers. "Are you undressing me?" he asked.

"Are you avoiding the question?" she answered.

He kissed her forehead, leaving a dab of wet warmth in his wake. "Have you ever known me to avoid questions?" He chuckled as she pushed his shirt down over his shoulders and teased his pert nipple with her tongue. "Oh, you do have a talent for that."

"You like it, huh?" She leaned across his chest and bit the other nipple as it stood erect. "Well, then, you'd better keep talking, mister. I want to see it in my mind." Sitting up beside him, Hannah looked out across the candlelit living room. Her gaze fell into the rocking chair under the vast window of the sunroom extension. "If there was a handsome young man, like that guy Jameson from your office…if he was sitting in that rocking chair over there, what would you do to him?"

"What would I do?"

"Yes, what would you do?" Hannah chuckled as Nathaniel rose from the couch and wandered toward the window. "I'm waiting for an answer, Mister 'I'm secure in my masculinity.' How would you make that boy come?"

Nathaniel set his thick fingers against the shining oak of the rocking chair. With his back to Hannah, he raised his head to the raindrops drizzling down the great window. She hoped the electricity would never come back on; this naughtiness was much more entertaining than anything on television. Her insides sizzled.

Turning, Nathaniel met Hannah's gaze from across the room. "If he was sitting in this chair right here?"

Hannah squirmed in her seat. Her panties were wet just thinking about charming Jameson, the young gay go-getter in the grey cubicle across from her husband's. "Yes, if he was sitting there naked, all dark and delicious, what would you do to his flesh?"

"The first thing I would do," Nathaniel replied, walking around the chair, "is touch his face."

She squealed like a schoolgirl. "You would?" Grabbing a throw pillow, Hannah hugged it close to her chest. "Oh, I'd never have guessed that. Where on his face? And what would you touch him with?"

Nathaniel rolled his eyes. "With my finger, you little minx." He looked down into the rocking chair as though Jameson were really seated there. "I would brush my index finger down his cheek."

Hannah cooed at the thought. "I've never touched a black man's stubble. I wonder what it would feel like. Would it be fuzzy, do you think, or sharp like yours?"

"I imagine it would feel like mine," he said, running a hand across his blondish five o'clock shadow. Nathaniel had an exquisite face: a squared jaw, a dimpled chin, a Greek nose, and a scorching look in his grey eyes every time a dirty thought crossed his mind.

"What would you do next?" Hannah asked, squeezing the square pillow closer to her chest. "I'm sure you wouldn't spend the whole night touching his face."

Standing upright beside the rocking chair, Nathaniel stuck his thumb in the air and wriggled it. "I'd put this in his mouth."

"Oooh…" Hannah chuckled. "I thought you were going somewhere else with that."

Her idea seemed to bring a blush to her husband's cheeks. Swinging her feet up onto the couch, she hid her smile behind the throw pillow and let out a throaty giggle. "Nathaniel, you've gone all shy on me!"

"Never," he said with a wink...

Give It Up for Earth Day

I just came across this cool initiative from Earth Day Canada called Give It Up for Earth Day, so I thought I'd pass it along. Their main challenge involves making the choice to give up meat, toxic cleaners, watching TV, and/or buying stuff for a given period of time.
I could probably cut down on my TV consumption (I've developed a bad habit of leaving the room with the TV still on) so I will start by not watching TV for ONE DAY. (Yeah, what a sacrifice, Giselle!) I know, I know, but after that one day I'll try another day, and another. I've already switched to non-toxic cleaners, and I hardly ever eat meat, so I could easily give up meat for a week (at least!) and buying stuff? I gave up buying stuff when I started writing full time! LOL
Definitely check out the website. It is coolissimo: http://www.earthday.ca/giveitup/index.php

Call for Submissions: Best Sex Writing 2012

Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel says she's hoping this call for subs will reach writers (and not-so-much writers) far and wide, so I'm posting it here for your consideration! Even if you don't consider yourself a "sex writer," you might want to give this one a once-over.
Rachel says:
This is not part of the "official" call but I'd really love to see pieces that are not by "sex writers," but by comedians or comedy writers, other kinds of artists, scientists, etc. – people who deal with sex in their fields (or personal lives). To me its vastness as a subject is what makes sex continually interesting, so please, spread the word wide and far. The deadline is looking (May 1st) but I hope this reaches all sorts of fascinating people. I highly encourage you to check out the previous editions (these links go to the pages for those books, or see more information at www.bestsexwriting.com) of the series to get a feel for the types of work we are looking for, but anything nonfiction about sex is applicable. For tables of contents and introductions, see: Best Sex Writing 2008, Best Sex Writing 2009 and Best Sex Writing 2010.

Best Sex Writing 2012
Editor: Rachel Kramer Bussel; selections by guest judge Susie Bright
Publisher: Cleis Press in December 2011
Deadline: May 1, 2011 (earlier submissions welcomed!)
Payment: $100

Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel is looking for personal essays and reportage for inclusion in the 2012 edition of the Cleis Press series Best Sex Writing, which will hit stores in December 2011. Any non-fiction writing covering the topic of sex will be considered.

I like work that looks at sex in new and unusual ways (see Stacey D'Erasmo's "Silver-Balling" in Best Sex Writing 2009 for a prime example, as well as "It's a Shame About Ray" by Kirk Read and "Sexual Outlaw" by Betty Dodson in Best Sex Writing 2010), that challenges us to think about sex and our own sexuality, is thought-provoking and possibly disturbing. I want sex journalism that's found in the most unexpected places and is as topical as possible.

No fiction or poetry will be considered.

Previous editions of BSW have featured authors such as Brian Alexander, Violet Blue, Susannah Breslin, Betty Dodson, Stephen Elliott, Gael Greene, Paul Krassner, Judith Levine, Michael Musto, Scott Poulson-Bryant, Mary Roach, Tristan Taormino, Virginia Vitzhum, and others.

Requirements: For reprints, story must have been published (or is slated to be published) between August 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011, online and/or in print (book, magazine, zine or newspaper) in the United States. Original, unpublished work is also welcome.

Authors:
Please send your double-spaced submission (1,500-4,000 words) as a Word document or RTF attachment to bestsexwriting2012 at gmail.com — you may submit a maximum of TWO pieces for consideration. You MUST include your full contact information, a 50-word or less bio, and previous publication details for reprints.

Include your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, and exact publication details (title of publication, date of publication, and any other relevant information). Only send work you own the licensing rights to.

Editors:
Submit up to three submissions from their publication, following the guidelines above. Provide the author's contact information available upon request.

Email address (for queries and submissions): bestsexwriting2012 at gmail.com
Payment: $100

Deadline: May 1, 2011 (earlier submissions welcomed and encouraged)
You will receive an email confirming your submission; after that you can expect to hear back from me by August 2011.

Rights bought:
Author hereby grants Editors, during the first term of the United States copyright, and any renewals thereof, in the "Work":
a. The non-exclusive right to "publish" (i.e. print, publish, and sell) the Work as part of the Book in book and digital form in English in the United States and its territories; and

Quick Six TNG with Berengaria Brown

It's Monday and that means another fabulous Quick Six TNG, this week with Berengaria Brown!1. What does "vanilla" mean to you?
Vanilla is nice. It's good. There's nothing wrong with vanilla. But
vanilla with hot fudge sauce, and chopped nuts. Yum! That's much
better.

2. Is there any moment from your life that you remember in slow motion?
A long time ago I was at a party and a woman dropped her glass. One of
the men stepped forward and caught it before it hit the floor. It
really was in slow motion. I could see the look on her face, see him
step forward, see him catch it. But it really happened in less than a
second. What awesome reflexes that man had!

3. What's the most unsettling movie you've ever seen?
I don't watch that type of movie. I'm more a James Bond kinda gal.
Gotta love explosions, car chases, and yummy heroes.

4. If you had to get a tattoo on your face, what would you want it to look like?
Something unique, different, timeless. Small and pretty.

5. How many monkeys jumping on the bed?
On the left, two male. In the middle, two male, one female. On the
right two female. Why yes, I do write MM, MMF and FF.

6. Which of the books or stories you've written is your favorite?
A good Momma doesn't have favorites, but I do love Regencies and this
particular book has been very popular with readers and reviewers.

"Lady Caroline's Reward" blurb
Lady Caroline Eversley is the only child of the Earl of Blackshire. He
is growing forgetful and she needs a chaperone so hires Miss Dinah
Watkin, a distant relative whom she met once at a family gathering and
enjoyed good friendship with.
While dealing with unwanted suitors, Dinah and Caroline fall in love,
and Dinah teaches Caroline all about sex. But the problem of
Caroline's suitable chaperonage refuses to go away. And in Regency
England unmarried women had almost no rights. Whatever will happen to
them as the Earl's health fails?
