Arthur Hunt Chute was born in Stillman Valley,, Illinois. His parents moved the family back to their native Nova Scotia in 1892. He grew up in Halifax and Wolfville, Nova Scotia, later attending Acadia University (Class 1910).After graduating from Acadia, he continued his studies and graduated from Newton in 1914 with a B.D. The Acadia Record notes that Chute was a student at Edinburgh University. He traveled extensively in Egypt, Palestine, Asia Minor, and the European continent.

He was a journalist and author. His respect for the sea and the people who worked on it and his taste for travel and adventure were reflected in both his fiction and his journalism.
