One Woman's Day

by B. Lynn Goodwin

Chapter One

This is the day that could change my life.

I’ve been living in the shadow of my big brother, Brian Mason, all of my life, but in five more minutes, I’m going to audition for San Ramos High’s spring production of Oklahoma! I’m reading for Ado Annie, who sings and dances and flirts, but if I don’t get it, maybe I can play Gertie or Ellen or somebody else with lines.

Across the room, the ugly Senior Sofa is crammed with drama’s elite in skinny jeans and faux fur jackets. They’re hoping for leads too, and they’re seniors. Where does that leave a sophomore like me? I slide my hand into my backpack and pull out two red M&Ms. The chocolate melts on my tongue and soothes my stomach.

Jenn McCall, the best singer in the sophomore class, slips in next to me, drops…

Letting Characters Speak | Teaser Tuesday Guest Post by B. Lynn Goodwin

This technique works!

Adan Ramie

I love featuring writers on my blog. Writing a guest post is a lot different than writing a post for your own blog, so I think that allowing authors a space on my blog gives them a chance to speak for a different side of the story to what we might normally get.

This month, I have the managing editor of Writer Advice and author B. Lynn Goodwin interviewing the main character in her new book, Talent, the story of a girl who is trying to find her way and her place in the world. Without any further introduction, here’s Lynn:

Years ago when I was writing a series of articles for Dramatics Magazine, I invented Sandee Mason. The articles described a series of drama exercises, and were written in Sandee’s journal. They were written in the voice of a fifteen-year-old drama student seeking her talent.

Valentine’s Day

Talent_200x300_dpi72

TALENT

Happy Valentine’s Day.

They have this tradition at San Ramos High that people can sign up and send carnations. The money goes to Student Government I think, and last year there was a big deal about who got the most flowers.

You got to write a message for your carnation, and each one cost $2.00. I did one for Diego that said, “Friends forever,” even though I want us to be more than friends—most of the time. I did one for Tessa and I wound up writing the same thing, which is weird, because Diego and Tessa are very different, except they both are good listeners. I really like having someone around who listens and pays attention.

I thought about doing one for Jenn, but I didn’t know what to say. I mean she twists everything around. I thought about doing one for Rob, because we’re working together, but when I tried to write on the card, I felt weird.

The girl from Student Council who was taking the money said I could send it anonymously. Something inside my stomach clenched when she said that. I don’t know why, but I didn’t send him anything. So on Friday, Student Council people came in at the end of second period and gave them out.

Rob sent me one that said, “You’re a hottie and it’s fun working with you.” I know he was trying to be nice, at least I think he was, but it made me all squirmy inside. Diego said, “Glad we are still friends. You’re the coolest girl I know.” I smiled when I read it. Tessa said, “I’m glad we’re friends.” The fourth one said, “Anonymously yours, Your Secret Admirer.” Seriously! It’s a little creepy, I know. I’ve been looking around since I got it, trying to figure out who this Secret Dude is.

When the Student Council kids came in with the flowers, I thought about Bri. He was one of them last year. Only a year ago… I hope he is okay, wherever he is.

Coming Out from Behind the Curtain

Talent_200x300_dpi72Coming Out From Behind the Curtain

I am so excited. Seriously! People like my story, the one B. Lynn Goodwin wrote down. Here are a few comments that make my heart sing. Thank you reviewers. I can’t tell you how good it feels to be noticed.

“Sandee Mason has hidden depths, but is the overlooked treasure in her home and school. Her journey toward finding her own voice, her own place, and her own life makes for a satisfying read.”  –Lani Rene Longshore

“Insightful, and alternately funny and sad, Talent is for Young Adults and Adults. It is a book about the complexities of teenage life in today’s world that makes you feel and, perhaps even more importantly, makes you think.”  –Judy Williams

“…she surrounds Sandee with a supporting cast comprised of believable, flesh-and-blood characters. Talent is an absorbing read that keeps the reader turning pages from beginning to end.”  –Al Garrotto

“I am far beyond my teenage years and I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, the rights and wrongs of war, family issues and alcohol dependency. The writing is skillful, flowing and well put together.”   –A. Rose

“Talent is a great gift for theater-loving teens.”  –Kelly

“Talent brings the focused universe of student musical productions into the messy world of family members coping with uncertainty and tragic loss.”  –Jean C. Wyer

“From the deep desire for the freedom offered by a driver’s license to the disappointment of trying out for something and not achieving a goal, Sandee shows the reader how to thrive under adversity. Talent is a page-flipping read!”  –Jill Hedgecock

So what is your take on the book?
What do you like?
Have you written about it?
Have you shared it?
Would you like to give it to someone you know?
Have your daughter read it?
Have your daughter’s class read it?

WHAT? You haven’t read it? Well it’s about time.

Goodreads Giveaway

Talent_200x300_dpi72

There’s a Goodreads Giveaway of TALENT until January 22.

Why not go in and sign up? ttps://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/show/169577-talent What have you got to lose?

What’s it about you ask? It’s about me. I’m Sandee. I tried out for my drama department’s production of Oklahoma! because I want to find something I’m good at. Bri was good at Student Government and track but he went into the Army and they shipped him to Afghanistan, and I don’t want to say any more about that.

The book is about our production, and what happens to my family, and what happens to Bri’s best friend, Rob, and all the things I never saw coming, and a lot of people say it takes them back to their own high school days. I’d love to hear what you think.

Go in and sign up for the Giveaway. You’ll make me happy. You’ll make the author happy. And if you decide to give the book away, you’ll make someone else happy. That’s what my drama teacher, Mrs. G, would call a win-win. =)

Do you have talent?

Sandee Mason wants to find her talent, get her driver's license, and stop living in the shadow of her brother, who disappeared while serving in Afghanistan.

Follow her journey as she tries out for Oklahoma!, tries to understand the seniors, and deals with the twists and turns she never anticipated.

Everything changes, including Sandee's understanding of what TALENT really is. Read the book and compare her talents to your own. Talent

The book is available in both print and digital formats on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Talent-B-Lynn-G...

Nine Resolutions from Two Years Ago

Talent_200x300_dpi72

TALENT

Amazing how some things change.

Mom said I had to clean out my closet before I took my Christmas gift cards to the mall. There’s a shoebox in the back of my closet where I sometimes hide things. You’ll never believe what I found there–my New Year’s Resolutions from 2 years ago.

I was in 8th grade then and very eager to get into high school. I had kinda started flirting with Diego again…sometimes…when he wasn’t acting like a child. Jenn was in my homeroom. My brother, Bri, was a senior at San Ramos High.

So anyway, here are my resolutions from two years ago. Some of them seem kind of silly now. Maybe I was more of a kid than I knew back then.

Lose weight before I get to high school.
Finish my science project, even though I wish I’d picked a different one. Otherwise I’ll get a D.
Take choir next semester if I can get in.
Talk to Diego about his band. See if talking about grown up things helps him act his age.
Encourage Diego to take me to the Sweetheart Dance in February.
Ignore Jenn when she’s being superior. It’s so rude.
Ignore Bri when he’s hanging out with Emma. No. Forget that. Pretend I’m ignoring Bri and Emma and kind of spy on them when they hang out here.
Ignore Bri and Rob when they tease me like I’m some little kid.
Find something I can do better than Jenn and Bri.

I never knew then what the next two years would bring. None of us did.

You can find out what happened to my family and me if you read TALENT. Copies are on Amazon at TALENT.

If you want to tell me your resolutions, I’d love to read them. Click on Comments at the top of the page, okay?

The Latest News

B. Lynn Goodwin

blg B. Lynn Goodwin

Good news! Both paper and print copies of TALENT are available on Amazon again, thanks to some wise help from Eternal Press.

If you go to Amazon and type in 978-1629293356, which is the new URL for the paper copy of TALENT, then click on the book that comes up, both paper and digital copies will be there. For that matter I just found it on a version of Amazon in French, though the book is still in English (or should I say Anglais).

So here are the steps:

Go to Amazon Books.
Type in the URL.
Click on the book.
Read the reviews if you like.
Choose Kindle or paper or both.
Post a review once you’ve read the book. (I sneaked that in to make sure you were paying attention.

I don’t know who is more relieved, Sandee, or me, but we are both glad the book is…
