Who is Haisley Jones?
Haisley Jones is a hero. But not the chest-out, I’m a bad-ass type hero. She doesn’t want to be a hero at all, actually. She just wants to be normal. You see, Haisley Jones grew up desperately poor in Florida where a girl of mixed race is invisible.

She was born Haisley Barnes in the year 2013, and she never knew her mother. In DEMOCRACY JONES Podcast we find out that her mother was “some half-Black floozy.” Her father was a white man, Lt. Barnes. A police officer in the township of Ellington, Florida.
We also find out that she grew up in a rundown, dangerous apartment complex called Pinebrook, which is commonly known as “Crimebrook” in Ellington.
In the year 2030, Haisley was arrested for the murder of her father, Lt. Barnes. According to reports, she stabbed him to death and dragged his body out into the Everglades, east of Ellington. Out there in the swamps, a wake of turkey vultures devoured his body. All that was left of him was his Ellington PD badge.
Haisley was abused in the local newspapers as a cop killer and a kin killer. There never was an investigation as to why she killed her father. The police, led by Captain Dick, Lt. Barnes’ partner, wanted no part of an investigation and instead Captain Dick used all of his power and connections in this small-town Florida community to ensure Haisley never had the ability to defend herself.
Haisley was sentenced to life in prison, but she accepted a plea deal. Per the terms of the plea, she would become a CP Grunt. CP stood for Conscripted Prisoner.
She trained at Parris Island to become a Marine. In the Seoul War (2030-2033), she saw regular combat in a division that had an 94% casualty rate (CP Grunts were sent on suicide and diversionary missions).
While she was on leave, however, the stress of her life became too much and she. . . committed suicide.
Or so she thought. She woke up in a white room as a man with a salt and pepper afro was walking out.
Little did she know, Dr. Owusu had brought her back to life when he installed a neural chip in her brain. The software in the neural chip was called Rhetoric, which was supposedly so dangerous that it was banned. Only one other person in the world had Rhetoric, and that was General Schenk.
Alive again, Haisley could not go back to Ellington. Instead, she moved to New York. There, she met De’ontay Jones, a member of The Crowned, a militant Black nationalist group made up mostly of college sororities and fraternities.
By 2040, Haisley and De’ontay were ready to start a family. Then. . . They moved to Florida. Horror ensued.
Not all heroes are confident. Haisley Jones, in fact, is the most humble person you’ve ever met.
Which makes her a true hero.

A Witness
I don’t really see myself as a writer. I have long seen myself as a witness to life. I’ve never had what it takes to become a famous writer. I simply refuse to pander to the audience by sticking to a particular genre or utilizing trends to make a connection with the reader. Instead, I witness life and use a figurative mirror to show the audience what I’ve seen.
I know now that most people do not appreciate this style of writing. People want what other people want. It’s a proven fact! and it’s called Mimetic Desire. And in the age of social media, this trend is heightened to decadent levels. If you get a chance, read about Rene Girard and his research.

Years ago, when I first began having my books published, I got the attention of a few fans. One of them had t-shirts made with a quote from one of my books that read, “I’ll send you my reports, as long as you promise to read them with your senses.” (on the front is an old wood-cut image of Francois Villon, the vagabond poet who I adore and allude to in Love and Maladies).
I was so honored that someone noticed and actually enjoyed my writing. I thought it was the beginning of a meteoric rise. But alas, many years later, I have toiled and toiled and have become depressed that no one really cared for my writing. So much so that I had to go back to my roots. Back to writing for myself. Watching the world, and instead of using a pen, I pulled out the mirror again to show the audience what I witnessed.
I felt free again. Free from the selfish expectation that I deserved to be noticed, recognized, featured or showered with compliments. It was for me again, and if someone happened to enjoy it, then that was a bonus.
I then wrote a book that was over 600 pages, then another book about baseball. No one reads books about baseball any longer, but it was well-written and I was satisfied.
Then a friend told me I should take a break from writing books and instead, do a podcast. Being a novelist, I was a little hesitant. But I loved the idea of including my music with my writing to enhance the emotional aspects of the story.

DEMOCRACY JONES PodioBook has been a joy so far. I took what I saw as decadence and decline in modern American culture and found a perfect anthropological and sociological comparison in the Late Republic period of ancient Rome. I then pulled out the mirror again to show everyone what I found.
Of course, you can imagine what happened next. It wasn’t very popular. Thousands of people listened to the first few episodes, and I have a small following of about 200 subscribers, but. . . In a world that demands you to choose between Liberalism and Conservatism, a Podcast about how absurd it is that we have to make a choice between the two, hasn’t really hit home.
What are you gonna do? Quit writing? Nah, I can’t quit writing. Just like I can’t pander for attention. I’ll keep holding up a mirror to what I witness, and if people can find enjoyment in what I’ve seen, I’ll be glad.
And if not, I’ll die one day satisfied that I wrote the way I feel people should write, from personal experience.

A Horror About Democracy?

Twitter critics who suddenly found this show have been asking me, ‘why write a horror podcast about Democracy?’ Well, Jan. 6, 2021 scared the living daylights out of me. I bet it scared you too. It caused me to think, “what if we lose democracy, like the Romans did? Is this the beginning of the end? How can I bring attention to the incredibly scary comparisons between the Late Republic period in Rome and the decline in American Democracy now?”
The answer to that question was, “Write a Horror, of course”

As the tagline of DEMOCRACY JONES Podcast says, “There is nothing scarier than a military coup.”
Here are some of the justifications:
If the founders of US Democracy turned to the Roman Republic as an example, why wouldn’t we turn to its fall as an example to AVOID the collapse of US Democracy? DEMOCRACY JONES Podcast does.
By comparing the Late Republic period of Rome with near-future American Democracy, DEMOCRACY JONES Podcast seeks to disseminate awareness of the things that brought Democracy to its knees in Rome and what is happening today in the US.

As most Anthropologists will tell you about the collapse of complex societies, it is never one thing that spells ruin. The Republic of Rome was no different. And although we have made great technological breakthroughs since then, we are still just as susceptible.
By telling this story, and witnessing the crossing of the threshold from Democracy to a coup through the eyes of citizens in a small American town, I hope that we can begin to come together, Conservatives and Liberals, so that we can figure this out before it is too late.
“Above all else, the Roman Republic teaches the citizens of its modern descendants the incredible dangers that come along with condoning political obstruction and courting political violence. Roman history could not more clearly show that, when citizens look away as their leaders engage in these corrosive behaviors, their republic is in mortal danger.”
~Edward J. Watts, Mortal Republic
