Progress?

Braved the scorching sunlight of our late-arriving summer to wander up to the Petaluma Progressive Festival this afternoon, where we checked out the usual booths, then Maddie and I sat beneath a tree, contemplating the seemingly low turnout, listening to Tom from the Phoenix Theater address the crowd, and watching people.

Maddie: "If they're so progressive, how come they all drove here?"

Quote of the Day

"As for the Republicans--how can one regard seriously a frightened, greedy, nostalgic huddle of tradesmen and lucky idlers who shut their eyes to history and science, steel their emotions against decent human sympathy, cling to sordid and provincial ideals exalting sheer acquisitiveness and condoning artificial hardship for the non-materially-shrewd, dwell smugly and sentimentally in a distorted dream-cosmos of outmoded phrases and principles and attitudes based on the bygone agricultural-han...

Expert Mouser

"Good morning, Sir or Madame," says the scraggly neighborhood cat, as she meets me on the front porch this morning. "Would you perhaps be seeking the services of an expert mouser? I have impeccable references, and promise not to taunt your little dog."

"Don't do it," barks Maddie from indoors. "It's a trap. She's in cahoots with the mice!"

"Curses!" cries the cat. "Foiled again!"

From the "What the Hell is That" Desk

So I just stepped out into the kitchen, and spotted this... monstrosity crawling across the floor:

Talk about your heebie-jeebie inducing moments. The thing had to be three inches from hungry end to spiky end! I kept Maddie at bay with one foot while I scooped the reject from a Brian Lumley novel into a cracker box with the blunt end of a Magic Marker, then took it outside for release.

But seriously... What the Hell is it? And how did it get into my kitchen?

Bumper Snicker

Spotted this while walking over to Our Best Friends this morning:

Now I'm wondering who the other ten are.

And I'm partial to the Sandow Birk/Marcus Sanders version, personally.

First Edition Fever

Hardcore book collectors are all crazy. They're downright nuts. It's a gentile madness, true, but never-the-less, a serious, documented condition: Bibliomania. Now, I'll admit to being a bibliophile , but I've never quite crossed the line into full-blown First Edition Fever. I have a few first editions, mostly things I've worked on, books in which I feel I have a personal stake. Some of which are winning major awards.

I appreciate the madness, even if I really don't understand the impulse to p...
