Not enough for Israel and Palestine: No one wins with (just) a ceasefire
Published June 22, 2021 at The Christian Citizen.
The world paid close attention to the May 2021 hostilities between the Israeli military and Hamas in Gaza and the precursory events of protests on behalf of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah, rallying cries for religious freedom to be protected on Haram al-Sharif (the Temple Mount), demonstrations for equal rights for Palestinian citizens of Israel, and other flareups between Israelis and Palestinians.

The City on a Hill: Jerusalem Divided
Published May 21, 2021 at Red Letter Christians.
The present violence in Israel/Palestine is the predictable result of Israel’s ongoing occupation of the Palestinian territories, significant military advantage, and its willingness to tolerate relatively little damage for the sake of preserving the status quo of occupation. Until the violence escalates, as it has in recent days, the world pays little attention despite taking place in land considered sacred by the three Abrahamic traditions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

U.S. Christians Can’t Ignore Israel’s Ongoing Occupation of Palestine
Published May 2021 at Sojourners.
Until recently, this spring had been a time of religious celebration in Israel and Palestine. Last month Jewish Israelis finished observing Passover just as Palestinian Protestants and Catholics celebrated Easter, followed later by Orthodox Christian Easter celebrations in early May. Muslims’ month-long Ramadan fast has been underway, and both Western and Orthodox Christians are in Eastertide, the period of remembering the paschal promises of forgiveness, reconciliation, and hope.

Assyrian Christians Caught Amid Geopolitical Conflicts
Published May 2021 at Sojourners.
In 2019, I met with leaders from the Nahla Valley in Iraqi Kurdistan whose eight villages are both Muslim and Christian. Entire villages had been forced to evacuate when they were caught in the crossfire between rocket attacks launched from Turkey against Kurdish militias in northern Iraq. Children and community members were traumatized. This February, border communities in northern Iraq were attacked again, this time by militants using Iranian-supplied weapons. Several rockets exploded in Irbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Pursuing a Faithful Witness: Christianity, Nationalism, and the Middle East
Published March 19, 2021 at Do Justice.
As a pastor and the executive director of an organization focused on peacebuilding in the Middle East, I have seen firsthand how the ideologies related to Christianity, nationalism, and the Middle East intersect. From teachings in Scripture to the missional mandate of the church, the Christian faith is integrally connected to the ways we engage with both nationalism and politics. Our civic engagement has profound impacts on the world. Christians have significant opportunities to influence both domestic and foreign policy that improve or diminish the lives of people in the United States and around the world.

Why the UAE Deal is Not ‘Peacemaking’
Published October 14, 2020 in The Forward.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught his disciples, “Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Christians tell this story over and over again in churches across the globe. And yet, so often, what is called peacemaking in the political world leaves peace far away and on the distant horizon.
Israel’s normalization agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which its Parliament is scheduled to approve on Thursday, was termed “peacemaking” by the Trump administration that mediated it, and all involved seek credit for being peacemakers. In reality, these deals could lead to increased arms sales, more violence in the Middle East, and the perpetuation of the ongoing military occupation of the Palestinian people.

Spiritual Activism: We Must Constructively Engage in Politics
Published October 13, 2020 at The Christian Citizen.
More than ten years ago, my work as a pastor took me to Washington, D.C. My first thoughts? There is nothing spiritual about that place! Politics and so many of the men and women in the game of campaigning, lobbying, and statecraft had the reputation of being dishonest, duplicitous, and devoid of spiritual integrity. While some of that exists in D.C. (and everywhere), I’ve been overwhelmed by how wrong my first preconceptions could be. I came to find incredible human beings who love God and their country, on both sides of the political aisle, who are doing their best to address problems, bring solutions, and create opportunities for all people to prosper.
