80 Years Ago—Aug. 25, 1942: RAF officer Prince George, Duke of Kent, brother of King George VI, is killed in a plane crash in Scotland, age 39, the first death of a member of the Royal family in military service since Richard III (450 years).

80 Years Ago—Aug. 24, 1942: In the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, aircraft from carrier USS Saratoga sink Japanese carrier Ryujo; Japanese carrier aircraft damage carrier USS Enterprise.
In one of the last cavalry charges in history, Italians successfully charge Soviets at Izbushensky, Russia.
US and Mexico agree to allow Mexican temporary farm workers in the US; 200,000 Mexican braceros will work in the US during war.
On Guadalcanal, F4F pilot Capt. Marion Carl shoots down 4 Japanese aircraft to become the first ace (5 victories) in US Marine Corps history.

80 Years Ago—Aug. 22, 1942: Brazil declares war on Germany and Italy after having lost 16 ships to German U-boats—this opens Brazilian airbases to cover Allied shipping and opens the South Atlantic air route; Brazil will be the only South American country to send troops to fight overseas—Brazilian troops will serve with distinction in Italy.

US Twelfth Air Force is activated at Bolling Field, DC, under Lt. Col. Roger Browne, designated to go to North Africa.
Dim-out regulations are issued on the US West Coast.
