Book Cooks: Broccoli Confetti Salad from Barbara Jean Hicks

When I put out a call for recipes, the last thing I wanted was a BROCCOLI recipe. After all, monsters (and YA authors) don't eat broccoli. Do they??

Well, according to Barbara Jean Hicks, they do (and she is an authority on all things monster). And, I admit, I do eat broccoli on a fairly regular basis. Eeek, that was totally not a pun.

So Barbara Jean, author of the forthcoming MONSTERS DON'T EAT BROCCOLI, brings us the following:

Funky Friday: Pink Hair 2.0

Step 1: Know the rules.

Step 2: Completely disregard them.

And, voila!

(Doesn't that sound kind of like writing?)

Book Cooks: Butterscotchies from Liz Gallagher

I happen to know that Liz Gallagher, YA author of THE OPPOSITE OF INVISIBLE and readergirlz Seattle Host, is not only a consummate storyteller, but also a mean cookie baker.

So of course it's not surprising that her novel, which takes place during the fall in Seattle, would include an inspired recipe devoted to city- and sugar-love. Here's Liz:

This recipe is from me to you, via my mom, who may have gotten the original from a company that rhymes with Laker Boats (they use raisins; I'm so m...

Advanced Praise for Tell Me a Secret - Unveiled!

It's on Amazon now, so I guess that means it's public and I can share... My other incredible, top-secret blurb for Tell Me a Secret can now be revealed!

Deb Caletti, author of Honey, Baby, Sweetheart and her latest, The Secret Life of Prince Charming, said about my novel:

"Tell Me a Secret is a gripping, emotional story about a young girl with a tragic past and an uncertain future. I dare you to set it down during its last hundred pages. I dare you."

(!!!)

I had met Deb briefly at a couple of boo...

Book Cooks: Linguini and Hattie Big Sky Cake from Kirby Larson

I've been saving this one for a thinking kind of day, especially after hearing Greg Pincus spread the word on social networking at the SCBWI WWA meeting last night (more on that later, hopefully!).

So today we have not one but two recipes from Newbery-honor author of HATTIE BIG SKY and co-author of TWO BOBBIES: A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship and Survival (and, I happen to know, a wonderful person and cook), Kirby Larson!

When I first put out a call for recipes, Kirby responded wi...

Social Bunnies, Dino-Tooth Fairies, and General Awesomeness

Yesterday was a big day for Bunnies, Dinosaurs, Martha Brockenbrough, and all of us who attended Greg Pincus' social networking workshop via SCBWI WWA. (You can follow our Twitter thread here.)

Greg has that je ne sais quois of those few who possess intelligence, charm, humility, and a striking resemblance to George Clooney. Photos stolen from Jolie:

(I am laughing with total embarrassment because Kim has just told me my sweater was doing that J-Lo camera flash thing...eek... Take that, sweate...

Book Cooks: Jungle Crossing Chill from Sydney Salter

I've been lucky enough to meet sassy and sweet Sydney Salter, author of MY BIG NOSE AND OTHER NATURAL DISASTERS. So it doesn't surprise me one bit that her recipe, inspired by her latest novel JUNGLE CROSSING (now available!) would have a lot of sweetness and a pinch of fire. (Plus I am a big fan of spicy chocolate...)

Sydney shares her inspiration, a chili pepper dessert contest....and a TV appearance!

I never thought about creating an official recipe for Jungle Crossing—until I found out...

Book Cooks: Coffee Jelly from Holly Schindler

Today is a busy day - in just a few hours, I am heading off to Greg Pincus' social networking training camp, sponsored by SCBWI WWA. Caffeine will be essential to survival!

Luckily friend and fellow 2010 debuter Holly Schindler (watch for A BLUE SO DARK in 2010!) came to the rescue with her recipe for Coffee Jelly. Holly says:

*****

I'm an insane coffee junkie (I actually think that coffee and WRITING are a more delicious duo than coffee and donuts)! My love of coffee has even started to bleed i...
