“My Mom Rocks!”
I feel very fortunate to be the mom to three wonderful kids. They aren’t perfect – by any stretch! And I don’t have fantasies that they are better than others, or above the norm. But they are my kids and I adore them. Today I was teaching my oldest daughter, age 16, to set up an online banking account. We were going through the process together and she had to choose a picture and pick a phrase that was meaningful to her for security purposes. We sat at my computer, and I was next to her while she typed in “My mom rocks” as her phrase.

We Don’t Have to Be Courteous - We’re Popular
I find that many of us are getting so tired of being treated badly, especially by those organizations we give our money to. I was reminded again this week how frustrating it can be when I wanted to do a simple thing – buy tickets for my kids to go to Water Country in Portsmouth, NH. Water Country advertises that you can obtain a $5.00 per person discount by simply buying online. But here is what really happens – you cannot do it, because they have a security system in place that makes it virtually impossible to get approved.

Co-Existing
This morning, while walking my dogs, I noticed a bumper sticker on a car parked in my neighbor’s driveway. It said simply, “Co-Exist”. I have seen this bumper sticker many times but today, for some reason, the simplicity and significance really struck me.
I Think You Are the Problem
One of my favorite things is reading the funnies in the daily newspaper. Yes, I still love the old-fashioned hard copy paper that gets delivered to my driveway every day, and I can’t wait to open it to turn to the funnies. I especially like the ones that remind me of my own life – the working mothers, or the families with teenagers.

You're OSM!
I had the good fortune to spend a day at the Swan Boats in Boston, my home city, this past week. I met a friend of mine whom I have known for over 20 years, Cathy. Cathy’s 2nd grader, Dori, and my 4th grader joined us for a fun day.

I Caught You! Doing Something Right....
“Compliment her at least ten times a day and reinforce the behavior you want. Keep it up for 21 days and you will see a change in behavior.” This was advice that an expert in child development recently gave to me about my teenage daughter. I get frustrated that she isn’t more “responsible” about cleaning her room, doing her homework and remembering to feed the dogs. This expert told me that recent research has shown that as parents we tend to criticize and point out what our children are doing that we don’t want them to do – i.e.

Do You See What I See?
I’m working with a company right now that is doing very well. I really enjoy the people I get to deal with every day, and am impressed with their expertise and professionalism. Many of the people I interact with are becoming increasingly frustrated because their leader seems to be taken in by a person that everyone else would term a “fraud”. It’s not that this person doesn’t have some redeeming qualities, it’s just that the contribution made is questionable and the trouble caused by this person’s actions is very great.

Get Off My Lawn/Nerves/Mind!
Have you noticed lately that a lot of people seem to be really angry? This week alone I heard someone yelling at a child who was walking on their lawn, I heard a mom in a store tell her kid to “get off her nerves” and I watched a woman jump out of a car and yell to the driver, “Happy now? I am out of your car and your life!”

When the Boss is Bad
Research tells us that most people take a new job because they are interested in the work, or the workplace. They like the responsibilities, or the work environment, and they feel it fits who they are and what they like to do. But why do most people leave a job? Because of poor management.
