The Friday Five!
1.
Okay, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
2. So, yes: I was on GMA this week,on Tuesday morning. I KNOW. You guys have NO IDEA how hard it was for me to keep this a secret (and I didn’t entirely succeed, to be honest). I’ll back up. So a couple of weeks ago, I get this email from my publicist at Penguin. She’s all cool and collected: “So Josh Elliott picked you for this breakfast segment, would you be interested?” I had to call her: “Would I be interested? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? OH MY GOD!” I may...

The Friday Five!
1.
Okay, so this was yesterday.
Why did I have a camera crew in my house, you ask? Well…I can’t exactly tell you. Yet. But I WILL say that when you do find out, you’ll understand why it was basically the fullfillment of one of my biggest dreams, well, ever. I still can’t believe it happened and there is MORE TO COME next week. In the, um, morning. Okay, that’s all I can say!!!
2. As is often the way, when great things happen they’re usually paired with some not so great, to keep you in check. (M...

The Friday Five!
1. Okay, so as I’m writing this, it’s 8am. I’m sitting in my kitchen, with only my dogs, GMA on the TV. My daughter is at school and will be there until 2:20. This, my friends, is the new reality, and I am STILL adjusting to it. She’s gone by 7:25! If I don’t take her (we take turns) then I can watch a full hour and a half of GMA uninterrupted. I could even watch from a SEATED position on the COUCH, but I have not yet worked up the nerve yet. Because I am just used to watching it while in mot...

The Friday Five!
1. You guys: as I write this, my kid is in KINDERGARTEN. I know, I know. She was just born about five seconds ago. I feel the same way. I also feel ENTIRELY emotional, evidenced by the fact I outright sobbed as I walked away from her classroom this morning. I was a blubbering MESS, getting wholly unhinged, and who knows what would have happened if one of my best friends in the world, who also has a kid at the school, did not decide to wait around in the lobby for me in case she was needed. I...

The Friday Five!
1. We’re in full-fledged back to school mode around here, finally. Classes at UNC started on Tuesday, which always sends me into a spiral of both wistfulness and gratitude. On the one hand, I so miss my students, buying fresh legal pads, pens and index cards and printing out my syllabus. Plus there’s that crackle in the air as everyone comes back and all is new. But on the OTHER hand, I’m grateful as always for the ability to write full time and not spend a lot of my weekend time grading pape...

The Friday Five!
1. First off, an update from last week’s post. Actually, not so much an update as much as a thank you. I got so many kind comments, responses and tweets from what I shared here last week about the drug issues I had in high school. It was incredibly kind and so moving, and reminded me yet again how lucky I am to have this community that shows up here every week. I’m glad I didn’t delete what I wrote, although I was a bit tempted, if only because it’s not something I’m proud of, and I worry how...

The Friday Five!
1. Confession: I was totally going to bail on writing this Five today. I drove up to Asheville for my LAST bookstore event for THE MOON AND MORE last night, then zipped back here to home this morning, and I am WIPED out. It’s not just that trip, though: I think that the cumulative effects of the tour wrapping up are hitting me all at once. Sure, I’m going to be at the Austin Teen Book Festival, and The Southern Festival of Books, and the VAASL conference in Williamsburg, as well as at NCTE (o...

The Friday Five!
1. It’s been a sad week around here, as my Aunt Bobby passed away last weekend. She was my mother’s sister, and a big part of my life, especially in the summers when she lived next door to us in Cape Cod. Bobby was the coolest. She was a voracious reader—I’ll remember her always on her sunporch, drinking coffee with a book in her hands—a Peace Corps volunteer, mother of three, grandmother and great-grandmother several. She worked at a bookstore, taught English As A Second Language, and loved...

The, um, Sunday….one?
Admission: I totally forgot about The Friday Five this week. Whoops! Mostly this was because from about 7am-4pm that day my family was in transit from Cape Cod, MA back home to Chapel Hill, a trip that involved driving, planes and more driving. Then yesterday was all about catching up, until suddenly I was like…”Oh, wow. The blog.” Things do fall by the wayside while on vacation. Like, um, sleeping, apparently, if you are my daughter. For some reason she started waking up multiple times durin...

The Friday Five!
1. Okay, truth telling time: again, I am starting this Five early, on Thursday. But I DO have a good excuse and, again, it is travel/airport/turkey wrap related. But WAIT! It’s not the typical Book Tour Travel thing, because this time, I’m headed out on a family vacation with my husband and daughter. So for once, I’m not going to the airport alone to trudge through security, then get stuck on a cramped plane with someone big reclining into my lap. I’ll have people I love with me! Which makes...
