Imaginary Friends by Roz Lee

Okay. Here it is. The salacious tidbit you've been waiting to hear…

I listen to 70's music while I write.

It's my one vice.

Okay. Maybe I have a few others, but this one isn't so bad. Really. The music provides a nice backdrop while I let my imaginary friends run wild. Yeah, I know that makes me sound like a whack-job, but honestly, I'm not. I just have all these characters in my head, and they want me to tell their stories. In order to do that, I need the right atmosphere. This usually consists of a cup of tea, some chocolate or cookies, Betty Boop, my faithful furry friend at my feet, and 70's music playing in the background.

My list of favorites is too long to list, but here's one that played a few minutes ago.

Imaginary Lover by Atlanta Rhythm Section. Written by Buddy Buie/Dean Daughtry/Robert Nix

(Yes, I'm aware of the common interpretation of the lyrics, but for someone who has a host of imaginary friends in her head; this makes perfect sense to me.)

Imaginary lovers

Never turn you down

When all the others turn you away

They're around

It's my private pleasure

Midnight fantasy

Someone to share my

Wildest dreams with me

Imaginary lover you're mine anytime

Imaginary lovers, oh yeah

When ordinary lovers

Don't feel what you feel

And real-life situations lose their thrill

Imagination's unreal

Imaginary lover, imaginary lover

You're mine anytime

Imaginary lovers never disagree

They always care

They're always there when

You need satisfaction guaranteed

Imaginary lover, imaginary lover

You're mine all the time

My imaginary lover

You're mine anytime

See what I mean? This pretty much describes my life! When I'm bored, my mind wanders, creating imaginary people, putting them in imaginary situations, and rarely do they disagree with me! You should try it sometime.

This one has been inspirational for a couple of my books, LOVE ME TWICE, and my latest release, FOUR OF HEARTS.

TORN BETWEEN TWO LOVERS

written by Peter Yarrow/Phillip Jarrel

There are times when a woman has to say what's on her mind

Even though she knows how much it's gonna hurt

Before I say another world let me tell you:

I love you

Let me hold you close and say these words as gently as I can

There's been another man that I've needed and I've loved

But that doesn't mean I love you less

And he knows he can't possess me

And he knows he never will

There's just this empty place inside of me

That only he can fill

Chorus:

Torn between two lovers

Feeling like a fool

Loving both of you is breaking all the rules

Torn between two lovers

Feeling like a fool

Loving you both is breaking all the rules.

You mustn't think you failed me

Just because there's someone else

You were the first real love I ever had

And all the things I ever said I swear they still are true

For no one else can have the part of me I gave to you

Chorus

I couldn't really blame you if you turned and walked away

But with everything I feel inside I'm asking you to stay

The romance in FOUR OF HEARTS is definitely breaking all the rules – in society, and in romance writing, but it's a story I had to tell. The human heart has a limitless capacity to love, and as we see time and again in the case of divorce or the death of a spouse, people move on. They find another person to love, suggesting that there is more than one soul-mate out there for us. Society dictates that we love them in a linear fashion – one after the other. But what if you found your other soul-mate while in a committed relationship? Would you – could you, ignore that love?

*****

Four of HeartsMarriage hasn't tamed Candace Callahan's sexual curiosity, something her husband Ryan is grateful for, but when she asks him to tie her up for her anniversary present, he knows he's going to need the help of their friends, Richard Wolfe and his wife, Fallon.

Dr. Fallon Enright is the resident sex therapist aboard the Lothario – the cruise ship co-owned by her husband and Ryan Callahan. When Ryan asks to participate in one of their couple's rope bondage classes, Richard isn't sure it's a good idea, but Fallon assures him all will be well.

What begins as innocent curiosity, blossoms into a polyamorous relationship none of them could have expected, but they are powerless to ignore. When the tabloids expose their new lifestyle, the foursome must choose between the love they feel for each other, or accepting society's moral constraints.

Weekend Dirty Dozen No. 5 #WD12

Uniform BehaviourIt's week five of Weekend Dirty Dozen, which I found via their Facebook page, here. You all seemed to enjoy last week's post, so I'm going to share a little more from that story…

Just Couldn't Wait, from Uniform Behaviour.

Bores chatting amongst themselves, bouncy PR girls talking up the product, stuffing samples into pockets and handbags, and waiters whizzing around with trays of champagne.

I need to get me some of that, thought Carla. Some bubbles might make the evening go more quickly.

She sidled out of her corner and moved towards the centre of the room, ready to snag a glass from the next tray that zipped past. Seconds later, a waiter headed in her direction. However, by the time the contents of his tray were in grabbing distance, Carla had forgotten all about the champagne.

The guy was gorgeous. How on earth had she not noticed him before? The evening would have been much more interesting had she had some eye candy to perv on. And this fella was definitely eye candy. Boxes of it, in fact.

Reaching across to claim her flute of bubbles, Carla took the opportunity to study the waiter more closely.

News, Reviews, Readings and Erotica!

Hey everyone! My site has been pretty packed just lately with the Noble Romance Authors Blog Tour (which I hope you're following and commenting on – have you seen the prizes you can win? Pretty gutted I can't enter!) as well as Weekend Dirty Dozen and Six Sentence Sunday stuff, so I thought I'd sneak on and give you a quick update with what else has been going on, and what's coming up. Here goes…

I recently signed on as a contributor to Queer Magazine Online. I don't have a set schedule so I'll just be posting as and when, but I wanted to draw your attention to my first post. It's called "Who's Reading It, Anyway?" and poses a question that I'm desperate to have the answer to, so please head on over there and check it out: http://www.queermagazineonline.com/articles/item/6086-whos-reading-it-anyway-by-lucy-felthouse

I've also had some fab reviews just lately:

One for the bookish babes who are tigers in the sack." 5 out of 5, Erotic Whispers

Weekend at Wilderhope Manor Weekend at Wilderhope Manor

"The chemistry was off the charts….they didn't keep their hands off each other from the offset and it is all incredibly hot! A sexy short with imaginative sex and a pair of frisky heroines. Definitely one to set you in a particular mood ;D" 4 out of 5, Scorching Book Reviews

Finally, I have a busy weekend ahead! I'm disappearing off to London tomorrow. Tomorrow night brings the highly-anticipated launch for Victoria Blisse's latest release, Tempting Rendezvous, which is part of a hot rubenesque trilogy! She's asked me to be her special guest, so I'll also be reading from some of my latest releases, including Seducing the Myth, which I will have print copies of for you to buy! Full details of the reading here.

Then Saturday brings the Erotica show at Olympia. There I will be doing a reading as part of Xcite Books' reading slam, and also sitting on a panel which will be chaired by Jane Wenham-Jones. The other authors sharing the panel with me will be Kitti Bernetti and my buddies Kay Jaybee and Victoria Blisse (we're so inseparable this weekend!). I'll also be mooching around all day, with the aforementioned Kay and Victoria, as well as K D Grace, Lexie Bay and Rebecca Bond. Methinks it's going to be a star-studded day at Erotica on Saturday! ;) Come back on Monday for an update on the craziness!

Guest Blog: Brita Addams

I'd like to welcome Brita Addams as part of the Noble Romance Authors "Timeless Desire" blog tour. Take it away, Brita…

What's your favourite published work of yours and why?

Honestly, that's like choosing your favorite child. But, since you asked – I have to say I truly love my Timeless Desire story, A Minute After Midnight. I absolutely love the dynamic between two men who love each other and with Reid and Logan, the struggle to overcome their past in order find their way to the future.

Where's your favourite place to write?

I write in the living room, on my sofa, using my laptop. I don't like the idea of sitting at a desk, so all my books have been written in the same place.

How do you get yourself in the mood to write?

I wake up. LOL. I'm always in the mood to write. I think I would write 'round the clock if I didn't need to sleep.

If you could bring one of your characters to life, which one would it be and why?

I would love to know Laurant St. John from Love Immortal. He's a vampire in the Regency era, someone who doesn't want to be a vamp. He's broody, angsty, and very much in love with Sebastian. I'd love to talk to Laurant for sure.

What are you working on at the moment?

I'm writing the fourth installment of my Romeo Club stories. They are pure erotica shorts, unapologetically so, focusing on men seeking fulfillment of their particular kinks. I plan on writing twelve to fifteen of these shorts, each with a different main character and a different sexual kink.

A Minute After MidnightHere's an excerpt from A Minute After Midnight, my m/m Timeless Desire story:

Chapter One

Each roll of the tires brought Reid Wright closer to home—or what had been his home until he'd struck out for the big city. Reid negotiated the ribbons of highway with something akin to fear. Not fear for his safety or anything quite that dramatic but fear for his heart. He'd only been back twice since college—once to bury his parents and even before that, only as long as it took to discover the man he loved wouldn't be sharing his life after all. When the announcement of the fifteen-year high school reunion arrived in the mail, he'd dismissed it, even threw it away. But then the thought of seeing Logan again forced him to dust off the coffee grounds and answer in the affirmative. He knew Logan would be there, and come what may, he plunged straight into the maelstrom of what would most assuredly be an emotional weekend.

He'd not considered Pine Oaks home since his parents had died. There were no siblings to visit, consequently, no nieces or nephews to buy presents for. Instead, he'd long ago exorcized the old hometown from his life and moved on; sans the one person he'd always counted on—Logan Chalmers.

As the endless highway stretched before him, he replayed their last night, when, despite much discussion, gnashing of teeth, and a fuck session that lasted into the early morning, nothing had changed.

"You don't understand," Logan had said. "I have to stay here. Dad needs me now."

"Can you cure his cancer with your degree in business? Damn, Logan, I need you too."

"He's dying, and he can't run the company any longer. Stay here, help me."

Reid had laughed at that. He wasn't about to bury himself in Podunkville, when the big city beckoned.

He'd replayed the ultimatum in his head many times over the years. "I'll pick you up at midnight," he'd said the morning of the day he left. If you aren't sitting in the car by a minute after, I'm gone, and we're done."

He'd eaten those angry words a million times.

Sure Logan would change his mind, he'd waited impatiently, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. When the light in Logan's room went off, he'd jammed his foot on the gas pedal and never looked back.

Hurt and anger had fueled his drive to New Orleans, though an epiphany came over him as he drove through Baton Rouge. He wanted to turn around, to tell Logan he understood, but then, as he resisted the temptation, he realized he didn't and never would.

The appointment the next day at Melancon and Myers, the city's most prestigious architectural firm, kept his over-packed VW bug rolling east on I-10.

After he'd gotten settled, he'd called Logan a few times, but the conversations were strained, and they never spoke of anything substantive. More, "Hi, how you doin'? Oh, busy? Well then, I'll let you go."

As time went on, his attempts to forget Logan failed miserably. Reid ate himself up over not considering how devastated Logan must have been when he learned of his father's cancer. Logan lost so much and must have felt the only way he could repay his parents for all they'd done was to keep his family's construction business going. When the full impact hit him about a year later, Logan had stopped answering the phone.

"Pine Oaks–50 miles" the sign read, and Reid's stomach did a flip. He wondered how much the place had changed. Shit, nothing stayed the same and why should it?

Thoughts of Logan teased at his memories, his smiling college roommate, with his sexy blue eyes and fine ass. Had he changed? Good question. And should he even care?

Yes, he should. He always had. Logan was never far from his thoughts, which had proven disastrous for any subsequent relationship.

His empty stomach guided him to the Pine Oaks Diner just off his exit. He'd collect his thoughts and calm his nerves before he checked into the Hyatt. As it was, he'd cut it close by waiting until the day of the reunion to drive in. Now, with only a few hours before everyone gathered at The Pine's clubhouse, he questioned his resolve. Did he have the courage to see Logan again?

He robotically ate a salad, his heart definitely not in it. He'd have much preferred his major weakness—a big, juicy hamburger with a hefty side of crispy fries, but he didn't want to feel bloated and guilty for missing the dreaded daily workouts.

The town looked polished, clean, ready for the tourist traffic. The short ride to the hotel impressed him. The small town politicians had brought home the money from Uncle Sam.

The valet at the hotel ran out to collect his keys, accompanied by a bellhop, who gathered his luggage from the trunk. The Hyatt—the hotel preferred by out-of-towners, or so said the commendation for cleanliness behind the desk. The pretty clerk handed him a key, which he found to be extraordinarily odd, given most everywhere issued key cards. Obviously, Pine Oaks hadn't come into the twenty-first century, but then, there was no real surprise there.

The room was adequate, save for the blue and pink bedspread, a mass of swirls and geometric shapes that was dizzying if looked at too carefully. The place was clean; it would do for two nights.

After shaving, he stood under the shower for a long time, allowing the water to rain down as he braced his arms against the tiles. Thoughts of Logan in the shower with him, as they'd done so many times in college, got him hard. The man's body was to die for. To keep up, he'd worked out, still, all these years later.

He slid a soapy hand around his dick, and thought of the many times he and Logan had fucked in the shower before class. They'd wanted each other with the fervency of eager, young men, and nowhere was off limits. The more dangerous the better.

They'd experimented with positions, bottoming as often as topping, sucking and touching every chance they got. Since then, he'd learned so many other ways of getting off, but had never found anyone else who enjoyed them as he did.

Emotions overcame him. He jerked himself off and cried at the memories he'd so long ago tried to bury. Such emotion was unlike him. He never cried, save for when he mired himself in Logan nostalgia. Thoughts of his last partner brought him around. Eric—tall, tanned, cocky as hell, and a great fuck, but absolutely no depth of character. The appeal had been his body, and the convenience of working together. Eric fucked with a rabid appetite, anytime, anywhere, but his list of partners also included every guy who made eye contact. Their breakup had been clean, Eric had moved on without much more than, "Oh, okay then, see you around." Reid was fine with Eric's absence, preferring solitude to the shallowness the man had brought into his life.

He turned off the water, stepped out into the steamy room, and wiped the mirror off with a clean towel. After he used it to dry, he squeezed some gel into his hand and styled his hair the same way he'd done it for the last ten years. It took too much energy to make a change, and for what? He had no one to impress. He dabbed on his cologne before then slid his beige Dockers up his legs. Though he'd hung his shirt in the bathroom to try to steam out the wrinkles, it hadn't worked, so he set up the ironing board and ironed his royal blue shirt. Finding that particular shirt had taken on utmost importance, and he'd spent all day the prior Saturday combing every store in the mall to find it.

He'd owned one just similar to it, same color at least, and Logan loved it so much, he'd confiscated it just before their breakup. Somehow, the subtle reminder seemed appropriate. Whether Logan noticed or not was another story, but Reid hoped the man would realize the gesture was meant for him—a peace offering perhaps.

He checked his fingernails and his teeth, then padded around the bedroom, trying to remember where he'd left his shoes. He found them, and after using the complimentary shoeshine do-dad to buff away the road dust, he slipped the loafers on. Relieved to see he was on time, he clasped his watch around his wrist. Just a fifteen-minute drive to The Pines, and then it was anyone's guess what would happen.

He shoved the big-ass room key into his pocket and picked up his car keys. As he looked around to see if he'd forgotten anything, he drew in a deep gulp of resignation. Why am I putting myself through this? What would he do when he saw Logan with someone else, happily talking over all their years together?

He pulled the door open and stepped into the corridor. Yeah, this night should prove interesting.

Guest Blog: J.S. Wayne

I'd like to welcome J.S. Wayne as part of the Noble Romance Authors "Timeless Desire" blog tour. Take it away, J.S…

Do you have any unusual writing rituals?

Before I sit down to start my writing day, I pee on a fire hydrant and sacrifice a chicken sandwich. It's my thing.

I'm KIDDING!

I don't know if my rituals really qualify as rituals at all, to be perfectly honest. I grab a beverage, a pack of cigarettes, and an ashtray. The full items are empty and the empty items full long before my work day ends. And I write like a maniac until I can't write anymore.

Who is your favourite character from one of your stories and why?

So far, my favorite character is Moradiel, from the "Angels" series. For all his power and abilities, he still finds himself at the mercy of fate and the machinations of his fellow angels. Even so, he's gentle with the woman he loves and ruthless when she's threatened.

Some day, the kind of guy I want to be!

How do you get yourself in the mood to write?

Since I write full-time as a profession, I can't afford NOT to be in the mood to write. I'm always promoting, outlining, pondering plot points, or calculating new and exciting ways to get rid of another fifteen minutes of that pesky "spare time." And when I'm not doing that, I'm asleep! *laughs*

I have to have three things in front of me to be able to write: music, a beverage (usually Mountain Dew, beer if it's later in the day), and an empty ashtray and full pack of cigarettes. The full items will be empty and the empty items full long before I'm done with my day!

What's the best writing tip you've ever been given?

The best tip I ever got came from Margie Church, when I was working on "Dancing On Flames." She told me to put my head in a box and switch brains with my characters. Divorcing "myself" and my own predilections from the equation made it a lot easier to create characters that I felt were believable and "real," and I'm very grateful to her for this wisdom.

What are you working on at the moment?

I have several projects on my docket, as it happens. On November 28th, "Dancing On Flames," my first foray into m/m erotic romance, comes out from Noble. Then I've got a submission, "Dead Means Dead," for the upcoming Lesbians Vs. Zombies series from Noble Romance. I'm trying to finish off the last "canonical" story in the "Angels" series, Angel of Death, and an erotic romantic comedy fantasy I started this summer, Once a Knight's Enough. After I'm done with that, I'll move back to work on The Hollow, my erotic horror update featuring none other than the Headless Horseman.

In the meantime, I'm also trying to raise awareness for Writing Out Child Abuse, a coalition of publishing-industry professionals who are dedicated to bringing comfort, aid, safety, and hope to survivors of child abuse worldwide.

What's been your biggest writing challenge? How did it turn out?

So far, my greatest writing challenge that WENT anywhere was when I decided, in a fit of insanity, to sit down and write an m/m novella. Getting myself into a headspace where I could explore the proclivities of two men who found  each other attractive cost me more than a few sleepless nights. Finally, I talked to Bryl Tyne and explained the trouble I was having. He was very pointed, as Bryl always is, but very helpful in getting me around the block.

That novella, "Dancing On Flames," is due out November 28th from Noble. And without Bryl, it probably would never have seen daylight!

Ancient MagicMore than two decades have passed since the Hodans invaded the peaceful kingdom of Jurav. In their zeal for conquest, they have mercilessly rent the Juravian national character asunder, starting with the temples of their gods.

Varath was raised from a young age by his uncle to one day assume his father's mantle— of the command warden of the Temple of Noradi, the most beloved goddess of the Juravian pantheon and the deity of heart, hearth, and the fires which burn in both.

Melody would have been the High Priestess to Noradi, and her own family has groomed her with equal care against the day when the Hodan hordes would be expelled and she could assume her rightful place as the most powerful figure in the entire nation . . . and as Varath's bride.

When Varath departed to serve in the Hodan army, Melody saw it as an unconscionable betrayal. Now Varath has returned to take his father's place as the sole guardian of a temple where no one dares enter, and he has made overtures to claim the other half of his bequest: Melody herself. But can Melody see past the deceptions and lies his rebellion has forced and learn to love the man who seems to have turned his back on his own people?

eBook Review: Familiar Light by Sarah Ballance

Familiar LightFamiliar Light by Sarah Ballance is classed as a sensual romance, but also has a healthy dollop of suspense thrown in for good measure. Part of the Timeless Desire range of books (I reviewed one by KevaD here) from Noble Romance, Ballance gives us a very tense, sensual read.

Familiar Light tells the story of Laney Kent, a girl who left her hometown of Barrier Shoals to go to college. She promised her first love, Bridger Jansen, that she would return – and she does, but by the time she does, it's seven years later. Understandably, Bridger is not impressed and gives her a chilly reception, despite being secretly thrilled to see her – he's never loved anyone else.

Determined to make amends, Laney sticks around. However, when she's the victim of an attack, it seems that someone is really not happy with Laney's return to Barrier Shoals. But who? And why?

This is the first title from Sarah Ballance that I've read, but it definitely won't be the last. Ballance does a brilliant job with the longing, emotion and tension in this book and I found it a real page turner. She is also mistress of the cliffhanger – meaning I hope there's a sequel in the works!

Overall, if you enjoy sensual, action-packed reads, then you should definitely get your hands on a copy of Familiar Light.

Six Sentence Sunday – 13/11/11

[image error]Here are six sentences from my m/f erotic romance story Love Through Time, from Noble Romance.

Also, to comment on this post, it's the link at the top ^^ – not the bottom. Thanks guys!

Most of them seemed in no hurry to leave, stopping to make comments to the woman at the door, thanking her for a lovely visit and so on. Emily waited patiently to the side, allowing the patrons to leave before attempting to enter. When the staff member—most likely a volunteer, Emily thought—caught sight of her, she gave her a polite nod of acknowledgment.

Finally, the last of Westbury Hall's visitors moved out, leaving Emily free to enter. Climbing the single, stone step to the threshold, she took the hand already offered her.

Shaking Emily's hand with a surprising firmness, the woman said, "You must be Miss Stone."

Weekend Dirty Dozen No. 4 #WD12

Uniform BehaviourIt's week four of Weekend Dirty Dozen, which I found via their Facebook page, here. Rather than carry on with the story I shared last week, I wanted to do something different, in honour of the very special date.

As I'm sure you know, today is Remembrance Day (that's what we call it in the UK). Wherever you're from, whatever it's called to you, it means the same to us all. So in honour of that, I'm going to share twelve sentences from an erotic anthology I put together last year, called Uniform Behaviour. As my way of saying thanks, a proportion of the proceeds from this book go directly to UK charity Help for Heroes, which provides help for returning servicemen and women who've been injured at war.

I'm not going to say any more as I don't want to get maudlin, so without further ado, here's dozen from my story in the anthology, entitled Just Couldn't Wait.

Carla was pissed off. She'd made an awful lot of effort for this event, and it was totally bombing. As a freelance journalist, you never know when you'll need a favour, so Carla had dressed up and attended in order to keep everyone happy. The evening was the launch of some perfume or another – it was basically an excuse for a glitzy party and some networking. Unfortunately, though, it wasn't doing anything for Carla, networking or otherwise.

Hell, the party was posh enough. There was plenty of food and drink to go around, but the company sucked. All the fun people clearly had better things to do this evening. Which is why Carla was displaying behaviour most unlike her; she was being a wallflower. There were hardly any people around that she knew, and the ones she did know, she didn't particularly like.

Lurking in the corner, she observed. Not that there was much to look at.

eBook Review: Diamonds and Toads: A Modern Fairy Tale by K. E. Saxon

Diamonds and ToadsDo not be fooled by this book's innocent looking cover. A modern fairy tale it may be, but innocent it is not. I knew this book was a romance, obviously, but from the cover and the blurb I was sent (I notice the blurb on Amazon mentions sexual heat), I wasn't expecting the level of eroticism that's in it. Naturally, this isn't a bad thing for me as I love to read erotica, I was just surprised by it.

The premise is a fairly familiar one, that is, it's a twist on the fairy tales we know and love. There's a good sister and a bad sister, an evil stepmother and a fairy godmother. But that's where the similarities to classic tales ends.

Diamonds and Toads tells the story of half sisters Delilah and Isadora, who are good and evil, respectively. Without giving too much away, both sisters have an encounter with a fairy within this book. The fairy blesses Delilah with wealth and the man she's loved for as long as she can remember, and bestows a curse on Isadora which makes her come out with obscene and humiliating comments, whether she means them or not. To make it worse, the man that Isadora has long held a torch for comes back into her life just as the curse is placed on her.

So it seems that life is going swimmingly for Delilah, but of course it wouldn't be much of a story if everything was straightforward. As the tale progresses, it becomes apparent that both Delilah and Chas have secrets. Ones that could tear them apart. On the other hand, it looks as though Isadora and Sam may get their happy ever after, but there's just the matter of her evil mother…

I thought Diamonds and Toads was a good fun read. All the fairy tale elements are very tongue in cheek and made for a light-hearted, feel-good book. Like I mentioned before, I wasn't expecting the erotic elements, but they were very welcome and extremely hot! There were some seriously sexy scenes in the book, including some BDSM. So, if you're looking for a pure chick-lit/fairy-tale read which doesn't get too steamy, then perhaps this isn't for you. But if you enjoy reading erotica and erotic romance, then snap this book up like a shot. It's well-written, pacy, sexy fun, and I'd definitely look out for more by this author.
