Book Review: Wrapped Up in You by Carole Matthews

Article first published as Book Review: Wrapped Up in You by Carole Matthews on Blogcritics.

Wrapped Up in YouWrapped Up in You is the first of Carole Matthews' novels that I've read. Based on how much I enjoyed it, it definitely won't be the last. I read it in a couple of sittings, and had life not gotten in the way, I could have easily have done it in one. It's that easygoing, not to mention a page turner!

This heartwarming romantic comedy is about Janie Johnson, a thirty-something hairdresser who's pretty much given up on love. She doesn't think she's ever been in love, and isn't hopeful that she ever will be. She's just plodding along in life, aware that she's missing out on something, but has no idea what to do about it. That is, until several things conspire at once to make her change her mind: too many nights in alone, a terrible blind date and the news that her ex is getting married. Before you know it, Janie has booked a ludicrously expensive holiday to Africa and is looking forward to getting away from it all. All her friends think she's barmy, and by the time the holiday rolls around, Janie's beginning to agree with them.

However, a flight and a very bumpy drive later and Janie's being introduced to Dominic, her tour guide for the week. She very quickly forgets her misgivings, and by the time her holiday of a lifetime is over, she's also convinced she's found the love of her lifetime. Maasai warrior Dominic is a charming sex god who speaks very good English, and Janie is completely besotted. It appears Dominic feels the same way. Therefore when it's time for Janie to go home, she really doesn't want to. But she must.

Arriving home, all Janie can think about is the fact that the love of her life is thousands of miles away. Once again, her friends think she's crazy and are convinced that Dominic is just trying to snare himself a rich British woman so he can come and live in England. Janie knows that isn't the case, and continues to think of a way she can be with Dominic. But it certainly won't be easy…

Wrapped Up in You really is a fab book. It's an easy read, and had me speed reading to find out what happened next. Janie is a fab – if somewhat ditzy heroine – and Dominic is just… well. He's not your typical romance novel hero; he's big, he's adorable, he's hilarious and a total sweetheart. There were lots of twists and turns in the book and I wasn't sure where it was going to end up, which is always a good thing. It's all wrapped up in a satisfying ending which left me with a great big silly grin on my face. Call it a rom com, call it chick lit. Call it what you like – I'm calling it a damn good book.

Paranormal Romance:  Making Death Hot

A huge thank you to Lucy for having me here today!  My novel Spiritus has been out since October and it's kept me real busy.  This series was so much fun to write and I've enjoyed sharing Becca and Alastor with my readers.

The big question I always get is "what makes ghosts so hot right now?"  My answer is simple.  They've always been hot!  I wrote a post on my own blog about how ghosts are poised to be the new vampire and the paranormal romance genre will never be the same.

Death has been sexy ever since Dracula first bared his fangs and there is no sign of that changing.  Writing for the dearly departed has its drawbacks.  A vampire has to drink blood and a ghost is….Well, a ghost.

For Spiritus, the sexual tension pushed the story forward and was a constant undercurrent in scenes, but since Alastor was a ghost, everything had to remain subtle.   For a writer that was a challenge, but as a story element, it just made him that much hotter.

As the paranormal genre becomes more and more popular, vampires and ghosts will battle to see who will reign supreme, but no matter how you look at it, when it comes to paranormal romance, death is hot.

*****

SpiritusA love that refuses to die…

"As I watched him vanish into a soft mist that faded away, I knew that he was no ordinary spirit…I knew that he was a dangerous entity that could be in some corner of another realm planning his revenge, but I also knew that I was hopelessly in love with him."

When Becca moves into her ancestral home in Corydon, Indiana, her life takes a puzzling and thrilling turn when she meets the ghost haunting the halls. As the seductive spirit lures her closer and closer, she learns about her own past and starts to understand that some mistakes are meant to last.

Becca McAllister has always been different from other girls her age. Never part of the "in crowd", Becca never really fit in anywhere. When her mother dies and her father moves them to the small town of Corydon, Indiana, Becca didn't expect things to change.

But things do change when Becca accidentally makes contact with a one hundred and sixty year old ghost, Alastor Sinclair, that haunts the halls of her new home.

To Becca, Alastor is a seductive spirit that seems to see straight into her soul. To Alastor, Becca is what he was waited a century for–A second chance.

But the closer they get, the more Becca realizes that this isn't the first time she and Alastor have known each other. Worse still, is she the one responsible for his death so long ago? And if so, did he come back for love or revenge?

Six Sentence Sunday – 15/1/12

Susie White and the Right Hand ManHere are six more sentences from fairy tale retelling Susie White and the Right Hand Man, from House of Erotica.

Her gorgeous hair was perfectly quaffed, and her attractive features were enhanced by expertly applied makeup. Her outfit looked like something from a fashion magazine. I managed to pull myself together before she saw me standing there, all slack-jawed and stupid-looking. Walking towards her, I'd held out a hand.

"Louise!" I'd said, beaming, "I'm so pleased to finally meet you. Dad's told me so much about you."

It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This!

Susie White and the Right Hand ManWow, I have been a very lucky girl indeed this week! I've received yet another super review of Susie White and the Right Hand Man! I'm ecstatic!

Dawn of Day Dreaming reviewed it, and here's what she had to say:

"Lucy Felthouse has quickly become my go to for short reads, when I don't have hours in the day I know that I can get my fix for a quickie with her every time. She gives you a fast paced story filled with everything you want and has never disappointed."

I'm her go to! How cool is that? That's pretty much the highest compliment I've had for my work and I'm grinning like an idiot here.

Want to read the rest of the review? It's here.

Wanna bag the book? Links are here.

It's a Hat Trick! (Of Fab Reviews)

Wow, I turn my back for just a minute (I've been out all day today – spent the day at a health spa and am now almost nodding off as I type) and I get a hat trick of reviews!

Immoral ViewsFirst, I spotted via Twitter that the super Cara Sutra had read and reviewed Immoral Views. Here's a little bit of what she had to say:

"There have been some erotica that I've found hot, but this is genuinely mindblowing. The stuff of fantasies for many years to… come!"

I also had another super review of Susie White and the Right Hand Man, from Judging the Book By Its Pages, who commented:

"This was a cute short story along the same lines as snow white only with an erotic twist. I loved how they broke the spell a willing sacrifice that ended in a great sex scene that had me wanting more. I recommend this book if you like fairy tales with an adult spin." 4 out of 5

Bite With HeightFinally, Girls Only Reviews covered Bite with Height, and were full of praise:

"This fun story has me from the beginning. I'm not fond of vampires/paranormal stories but Felthouse had me under her spell from the first sentence. From the dialogue to the easy flow of the story line, Felthouse brings forth a nice love story, basic vampire knowledge (I despise too much glitter, in-depth paranormal jargon and unrealistic thoughts) and focuses on the story line, the character connection and love. I commend Felthouse for creating the world of LVV, Meg and Grace and their HEA ending. Perfecto!"

I've also been busy on the guest blogging front this week. On Monday I was at the Erotic Diaries and Dirty Birdies sites, talking all things naughty. Yesterday I took part in the 2012 Lesbian Fiction Appreciation Event, with my take on the genre (and a giveaway!). Today, I'm over at The Forbidden Bookshelf discussing dirty dining. I have new posts appearing all the time, so keep an eye on the list in the sidebar to see what I'm up to —->>

Susie White and the Right Hand Man is a Top Pick!

Susie White and the Right Hand ManI was just a tad excited to spot this review in my inbox this morning. Susie White and the Right Hand Man was reviewed by Miz Love Loves Books, and it was awarded a Top Pick! Woohoo!

Here's what they said:

"Oh, this is a good little book. Right from the yummy front cover to the very last page I enjoyed it… Susie White and the Right Hand Man has all the elements of a fairytale: love at first sight, good versus evil, a grotto, magic, and of course a happy ever after. Plus it has some sumptuous spice that is missing from your usual Snow White story! Go grab a copy and enjoy."

See the blurb, excerpt and buy links here.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to dance around the room ;)

Totty Tuesday – Steven R. McQueen

Steven R. McQueenHurrah! Another Totty Tuesday! It's been a while… what with being crazy busy, Christmas, going on holiday, New Year, catching up etc… I've neglected Totty Tuesday. Needless to say I haven't neglected totty in general. I mean, there's always time for that, right? ;)

Anyway, I've been wanting to do a post on the lovely Steven R. McQueen for a while, but while he is absolutely, 100% legal (only three years younger than me), I've struggled to find a photo which made him look as such. He just has a baby face – and he's so much hotter on screen (in Vampire Diaries, just in case you didn't know) anyway!

So… yeah. He's hot – and in this pic I even see chest hair! He's also the grandson of Steve McQueen, so acting definitely runs in his blood. I've only seen him in Vampire Diaries, though his list of acting credits is pretty long, especially when you consider his age. Naturally the poor guy pales into comparison when you consider he stars alongside Ian Somerhalder (whose calendar will be keeping me drooling throughout 2012), but he's still cute. And he totally rocks that leather jacket.

Six Sentence Sunday – 8/1/12

Susie White and the Right Hand ManHere are six sentences from my newly released fairy tale retelling Susie White and the Right Hand Man, from House of Erotica.

He was happy, therefore so was I. Soon it became more serious and dad wanted me to meet her. I was excited, but nervous.

When the time came and Louise had walked into our house, I'd been in awe. Don't get me wrong, my mom had been beautiful, but in a natural way, as if she didn't realise, or care. But Louise clearly did.
