Frozen – the publisher’s verdict
I said I’d tell you what my Australian publishers thought of the Frozen manuscript. Well, I got an email from them this morning, and to quote my editor: “I absolutely loved it. My overall impression is one of fabulousness.’ Isn’t that nice? I am now a happy bunny. There will be editing to do on...

Olga Ciavologa, Dan and ridiculous lists
Having taken the last couple of weeks off, I’m now starting to think about what to write next. The thing I’m most interested in is writing a series of prequels to the Keepers trilogy – starting with a trilogy based around Olga Ciavolga and Herro Dan, when they were children. Before the museum existed. Back...

‘Path of Beasts’ excerpt
I said a while back that I’d put up a teaser for Path of Beasts at the beginning of each month, right up until release date. Last month it was the new (and very handsome) picture of Toadspit. Now here’s teaser number two. Random House have an online excerpt from Chapter 1: The Captive City,...

Re-filling the creative well
As I said in my last post, I’m taking a short break from writing after finishing Frozen. I thought I’d go straight into the next project, but my mind is still on that ancient, rusty icebreaker, circling the southern icecap. I need to read a lot (which I’m doing) and explore the world a lot...

First response to ‘Frozen’
The new book, ‘Frozen’, has leapt the first hurdle in fine style … my agent, Margaret Connolly, says it’s ‘a knockout’ and ‘magnificent’. *blushing* She has sent it to Allen & Unwin, who will probably take ages to read it because they are always so busy. But I’m feeling a bit more confident about it...

‘Frozen’ goes out into the world
It was one of those terrifying moments this morning when I had to decide if the new book, Frozen, was finished or not. I decided that it was. So I attached the document to an email and sent it off to my agent, Margaret Connolly. Now I’m sitting here chewing my nails, wondering if she’ll...

Claudia Black reading the first two books
I’ve just found these very nice readings on YouTube, of Claudia Black reading extracts from Books 1 and 2 of The Keepers. Here’s the beginning of Museum of Thieves. And here’s the beginning of City of Lies. I think she does the intro and the first chapter in each one, though I haven’t listened all...

Read This! competition – the entries
I’ve just been judging the Tasmanian entries to the Read This! competition, where kids were invited to submit a creative idea about their favourite book. They were allowed to work in any format they wanted, including writing a short story, making a video trailer, writing a poem or song, drawing, sewing a costume or making...

Mysterious Beasts workshop
It’s school holidays in Tasmania, and yesterday I ran a workshop at the Rosny library. The workshop was called ‘Mysterious Beasts’, and children were invited to come along, hear a bit about brizzlehounds, slommerkins and slaughterbirds, then invent their own strange and outlandish beast. We got some wonderful results. I took photos, which I will...

Path of Beasts – Toadspit
It’s almost exactly four months until the third book in the Keepers trilogy, Path of Beasts, comes out. So at the beginning of each month, between now and then, I’m going to put up either a picture or an extract from the book, to give you a taste of what’s coming. We’ll start with Toadspit,...
