P.J. Murphy writes novels that introduce unusual and humorous twists to established genres. If you pick up one of his books, you’re in for an unusual read that rarely loses its sense of fun.

His mystery novel, Dead Letters, was selected as the genre winner in the 2023 Page Turner Book Awards, and his coming-of-age novel, Yesterday’s Shadow, was the genre winner for contemporary fiction in 2024.

As a writer, P.J. Murphy tries to stick to the adage ‘write what you know’, although with the addition, ‘just make sure you exaggerate and distort it beyond all recognition’. He is planning to write a novel about taking a road trip with a parrot. He has never owned a parrot.

It’s always important to leave a hook, something that’s easy to pick up and carry on from. If you stop writing in a rut, it’s going to be ten times harder to pick it up when you come back to it later. So I allow myself to be flexible in how I approach writing once a novel is planned out. I try to write it in order as much as possible, but if there’s a super-interesting scene ahead that I can skip to, it’s worth doing that, just to keep the momentum going. (less)

My new novel, Six Steps to Salvation

Not a self-help book (although you could read it that way if you want), but a character-based satire focusing on the attempted redemption of shady businessman and all-around antihero, Trent Argent. It’s set in Geneva and takes the opportunity to poke fun at international organisations, conferences, air travel and much more.
