This week, during a torrential downpour, the IBF Super Bantamweight number 1 ranked boxer was killed in a car crash in Chanthaburi. Not only did he lose his life, but his wife and twin six year old children also perished whilst his two nieces were seriously injured.
I once had the privilege of carrying the Thai flag into the ring for one of his fights, whilst my friend carried his IBF Intercontinental belt. Since that fight, Thangthong's career stalled a little whilst niggling injuries and politics denied him a chance for the ultimate prize, but his May 5th stoppage of Macbute Sinyabi from South Africa in a IBF super bantamweight eliminator in Phitsanulok was considered his career definer. He had the chance to fight the winner of IBF champion Jeffery Mathebula and WBO title holder Nonito Donaire. At 35 this gentle, humble man was about to get his chance to be a world champion after years of dedication and sacrifice.
Humility is a trait often seen in Thai people, but Thangthong carried himself with the dignity of a man who knew he was not the complete boxing package of a Mayweather or Pacquaio. What he had was the heart and determination to dig as deep as any man to make his long term coach Khun Uwan proud. His face showed the signs of a fighter happy to jump into the fire of a slug fest, even when dropping his hands low and taking big hits on the way in.
Seeing the brutal training camps he went on at his base in Khao Yai, the three session days and the pain of damaged hands, his gentle kindness was disarming. Sharing a meal with him after his latest victory, the IBF commissioner confidently predicted his future as a world champion, but those coming late and new to the table would not guess who he was talking about. He wasn't holding court or trash talking his next opponent, but quietly sharing a long denied beer with his fellow fighters as part of the group.
His funeral today is a chance for us all to reflect on how we live our life, to be grateful for having met a man never bitter about how a record of twenty four and O didn't get him an earlier title shot, and to hug our children a little tighter. You were a good man, son.
