Bart Hopkins is originally from Galveston, Texas, but has lived all over the world during his 22 1/2 years in the Air Force.

He was born in the middle of the 1970s, owned an Atari, and loves 80s music. He can use a card catalog like nobody's business.

Bart likes to travel, enjoys pretending he's a photographer, and shares as much time as possible with his beautiful wife and three awesome children. They own a Westie Yorkie named Lulu ... or maybe Lulu owns them.

I would make some jokes about unlimited restroom breaks and not having a boss, but I also have a daytime job. One day though, I hope to make those jokes and mean it.(less)

I've got a few methods for dealing with those moments when I get the out-of-office message from my imagination.

First, I use my wife as a sounding board for the situation. This usually oils up the cogs and gets things moving.

If that doesn't work, I try to skip ahead in the story, and work on a future, unrelated chapter.

Finally, if one and two fail, I switch to another story, and I work on it.(less)

Elevators

Random thought for today…

When you’re standing, waiting for an elevator, are you one of those people who stands right up in front of the doors so that you can go in as soon as it dings and opens?

Or do you put a few feet of space between you and the elevator so that people can come out before you charge on board?

Despite believing we should all step back and give people time to exit, my natural in...

I remember reading The Secret History and enjoying it, back in 2004. And even though it took 10 years for her to push out another novel, at least it was a really good one, worthy of the Pulitzer it took home in 2013.

More of Bart's books…
“Families start out, most of the time, with unconditional acceptance of one another. That acceptance starts in childhood and continues into adulthood. Somewhere in there, between childhood and adulthood, the ability to distinguish right versus wrong is born.”
Bart Hopkins, Texas Jack

“One of the most glorious, yet tragic, things about being human was that, sometimes, you just had to learn things for yourself. Call it a flaw, call it a blessing, call it life. If everyone learned from everyone else’s mistakes, the world would be perfect.”
Bart Hopkins, Like

“With one Like I can say hi to a friend, support them during a crisis, share in a joke, make someone happy, or reinforce a person’s self esteem.  I make myself part of their world.  It’s like I stopped by for coffee.  But, by Liking, I can also avoid talking to all the people I don’t want to waste time on.  Or I can check to see what my ex-girlfriend is doing seven or eight times an hour.  It’s a double-edged mouse click.”

“He rarely laughed, merely smiled; she laughed enough for the two of them—and it was like hearing a sunrise.”
Bart Hopkins, The Bends

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”
Stephen King

“You’re not a hypocrite. You aim toward lofty heights. The fact that your arrow cannot always reach them does not make you a hypocrite.”
Harlan Coben, Darkest Fear

“Sometimes a beautiful woman had to do nothing more than smile to make you forget about any ugliness.”
Bart Hopkins, Fluke

“It was only a smile, nothing more. It didn’t make everything all right. It didn’t make anything all right. Only a smile. A tiny thing. A leaf in the woods, shaking in the wake of a startled bird’s flight. But I’ll take it. With open arms.”
