Spilling the Beans with Lorraine Carey

Welcome, Lorraine! Grab a cappuccino and let’s chat. Unless you have another favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise)?
Earl Grey tea -  iced or hot!

I love my tea too! Fur or feathers, petwise?
Fur - love dogs and obsessed with wolves! Visited many wolf rescue camps and felt so connected to these beautiful creatures.

Very cool. Any pet peeves? One thing that really burns your biscuits?
Yes, those people in the market with their trollies who stand in the aisles and refuse to move as if they own the store. I’ll do an “Excuse Me” two times, then just move on!

I think I've met a few, lol. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Buying shoes - yes even on this small island I know where to hunt some small shops to find cool stuff!

Favorite quote?
Humankind has not woven the web of life.
We are but one thread within it.
Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.
All things are bound together.
All things connect.
~ Chief Seattle, 1854 ~

That's lovely. If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
To create world peace - for sure!

If you could live out any fantasy, what would you do?
*Okay this vision has been with me as long as I can remember-
I own a villa overlooking The Amalfi Coast in Capri. I am standing  on my  balcony in a long white flowing dress as the wind gently blows a cool breeze. I am just staring out at the amazing golden sunset and watching the boats sail over the turquoise waters.
* I must mention for my 60th birthday my husband surprised me with a trip to Italy. Yes, we are going to Capri!

So exciting! Hope you share pics. :) Beethoven, Beatles, Foo Fighters or Keith Urban (what type(s) of music makes you rock out)?
Enigma, Christian Rock, Enya, Celtic Women

Does music influence your writing? Do you have a music playlist for your book?
Yes, definitely- while I was writing, Jonathan’s Locket I listened to Christian Rock and lots of Enya because it is a very spiritual novel.

Which of your characters would you most/least want to hang out with, and why?
I would definitely want to hang out with Mallock, the ancient turtle as he would tell me the mysteries of the sea.

Love that! While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
To start promoting and making connections at least 6 months prior to the release of your book , as you need to set a presence and start a platform.

Excellent advice. Where can readers find out more about you?
My website. www.lorrainecarey.com/
http://storyspirit4u.wordpress.com/
http://about.me/lorraineacarey

Please share a book blurb and/or excerpt.
Eva sat up in the kayak amidst a blackened sea. She wrapped a blanket around her as she shook with chills. She could see a thick grey fog plowing through the wreck site as it seemed to carry the screams along with it, as if all the lost souls who had lost their lives were trapped in the mist. I pray Brandon will survive this night, she thought. How could I have doubted him?
She watched as giant lightning rods struck down to the reef with rage. She knew she was witnessing some paranormal event. As she shined her light over to the reef where she last spotted Jason, she could find no sign of him.

Thanks for spilling the beans today, Lorraine!

Spilling the Beans with Becca Dale

Looking for the Sinful Sirens Blog Hop? Click here.

Hi Becca! So glad to have you at Spilling the Beans, where we can learn a little bit about you, and your book. Grab a cappuccino and let’s chat. Unless you have another favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise)?
Oh a cinnamon caramel cappuccino would be perfect. Thank you and thanks for having me here today. Love your site.

Why thank you! *curtsies* Fur or feathers, petwise?
Fur – hard to snuggle up with a bird although my husband and I rescued a golden eagle once – that was way cool. Definitely no snuggling involved though no matter how many times my son (then a toddler) would proclaim, “I pet that bird, Mom.

Wow, that would be cool! But I wouldn't want to get bitten by one, lol. Any pet peeves? One thing that really burns your biscuits?
People who don’t say thank you – who just act as if you are there to serve them. I cannot imagine why it is difficult to be polite.

People are too preoccupied for politeness, I agree. What’s your guilty pleasure?
Sleeping late. I grew up on a farm and my mom used to wake us by saying, “Get up. We’re late. It’s a quarter to five.” To this day sleeping in feels decadent.

Lol! I bet! Favorite quote?
There are so many. I guess Henry David Thoreau, “If one advances confidently in the direction of one's dreams, and endeavors to live the life which one has imagined, one will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” I like the idea of going confidently in the direction of dreams to achieve beyond the imagined.

Love that. What’s your ideal day like?
Ideal or Usual? Ideal would be spent on a gorgeous beach preferably Cozumel on somewhere, with nothing to do but laze about with the hubs and eat fabulous fresh seafood. Usual is nothing like that.

Ahhh, sounds good to me! If you could live out any fantasy, what would you do?
Spend a month or two touring every place on my bucket list especially Ireland, Hawaii, and Australia.

Beethoven, Beatles, Foo Fighters or Keith Urban (what type(s) of music makes you rock out)?
80’s Rock, Keith Urban, Kid Rock or any song that tells a story. I am way more about the lyrics than the music itself. I have friends who don’t get that, but it is always about the story for me.

You sound like me. :) Does music influence your writing? Do you have a music playlist for your book?
I don’t listen to music. It is too distracting for me when I write. I usually have the boob tube running for background noise but don’t watch it much. The exception to that was when I wrote “Can’t Stop Me” which was based on a song by the LA band Run Devil Run. I listened to that one over and over and over as I wrote because I wanted to have the feel just right. http://www.decadentpublishing.com/product_info.php?products_id=284&osCsid=gceda806e61h8oo6mbvb5k1q96

Which of your characters would you most/least want to hang out with, and why?
I would hang with any of my heroes – I often prefer the company of men as there is usually less drama – but I’d come back to Luca and Kern from “Can’t Stop Me” if I were to choose a couple because they faced some really tough stuff with laughter and heart; I would want to be that brave. Least, would be Darcy’s mother (stepmother actually) from “Sweet Temptation.” The woman was a bee-ach. http://www.wildrosepublishing.com/wildcatalog_v151/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=86&products_id=767

While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
Even with my first book, I was surprised at how little control I have over my characters. They seem to come to life with minds and opinions of their own. I can show them the path time and again, but if they think I am wrong, they will tell me so and go a different direction. I had a heroine once who slept with the hero too soon and couldn’t get past it – she hated him and disliked herself for it so she refused to move on. I had to start over with someone less of a prude. I know that sounds more than a little batty to people who don’t write, but other writers will understand. Right? Is that crickets I hear? Someone please tell me I’m not insane.

Blurb:
Terrified of her submissive nature, Kate Hastings refuses to give a man control of her life. Somehow, faking a wild and confident personality scares her less than facing reality—the heated longing for her sexy best friend and her deep-seated need for domination. Trouble is, none of the passive men she's dated do it for her.
Victim to a family curse, Connor Wallace can love only one woman his entire life—Kate. Yet, she insists on keeping him firmly in the friend zone. Determined to prove he’s more than friend material, he sets out to fulfill her greatest fantasies, even if it means tying her up to get her attention.
When passion and protective instincts collide, something has to give, but will the impact lead to broken hearts or sweet satisfaction?

Excerpt:
“Why don’t you ask her to dance instead of standing here gawking at her?”
Connor looked up at his cousin Gavin. “I’m not her type.”
“How do you know?”
The three-year ache returned with vengeance. “She’s told me. Repeatedly.”
“Maybe but Savannah thinks her friend’s in love with you.”
Kate looked up and smiled at him before turning to flirt with a strange guy beside her. What had she said she wanted—tall, outgoing, and sexually adventurous? He read the last as submissive since she didn’t date men she couldn’t manipulate. Still, all characteristics she failed to see in him. Maybe it was time to show her the flaws in her ideal man.
“I’ll talk to you later, Gavin.”
“Where ya going?”
“To fulfill Kate’s fantasies.”

Because I have a new one coming from The Wild Rose Press, I’ll share a bit about it. But sadly no link yet. Here is a link to the two previous ones in the series. Sweet Temptation http://www.wildrosepublishing.com/wildcatalog_v151/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=86&products_id=767

Spilling the Beans with Jessica E. Subject

Hi, Jessica! So glad to have you at Spilling the Beans, where we can learn a little bit about you, and your book. Grab a cappuccino and let’s chat. Unless you have another favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise)?Thank you so much for inviting me to spilling the beans, Cate!  I prefer Iced Cappuccino, but if you don’t have that, a water is fine.
Fur or feathers, petwise? We have a furry lop-eared rabbit. Though only one of his ears flops down. And we have fish as well.
So I should have asked, fur or fin, lol. Any pet peeves? One thing that really burns your biscuits?Intolerance.
I couldn't agree more. What’s your guilty pleasure?Lindor White Chocolate truffles
Yum. :) If you could have one superpower, what would it be?The ability to fly. Though extendable arms wouldn’t hurt either.
Yes! Like the mom in The Incredibles. That would be handy. If you could live out any fantasy, what would you do?I’d live on a private island with my husband and kids.
Beethoven, Beatles, Foo Fighters or Keith Urban (what type(s) of music makes you rock out)? Can’t say I listen to any of those. Maybe a bit of Beethoven. Oldies for me are Queen and Styx. I also like to listen to Foxes, Rihanna, Pitbull, Kelly Clarkson, and more in the dance and pop genres.
Does music influence your writing? Do you have a music playlist for your book?Yes, music is definitely an influence in my writing. Most of my stories have their own playlist, though there are some that don’t. My most recent release. Alien Adoration, was actually inspired by the song Spaceman by Bif Naked.
Cool. Which of your characters would you most/least want to hang out with, and why?I’d love to hang out with Rachel and Luke. Rachel is really sweet, and Luke is a sexy alien. As for who I wouldn’t want to hang out with? That would be Dirk and Jenny. Mostly because they don’t have any morals.
While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
With any story, it’s the ending that usually surprises me. I usually always have my stories roughly outlined before I start writing them. But the ending ALWAYS changes on me. I don’t mind though. The new endings are always better. J
Love it when characters hijack a story. :) Where can readers find out more about you?I’m always sharing information on my blog. I also blog on Backward Momentumand Paranormal Romantics. I’m always on twitter, and Facebook, too.
Thanks for spilling the beans today, Jessica!Thank you so much for having me today! It’s been a pleasure!
Learn all about Alien Adoration below, and check out Jessica's giveaway!

“Need a lift?” The voice was deep and masculine, one she didn’t hear very often, but would recognize anywhere. Luke. Wonderful! He wouldn’t talk to me before, but now that I’m topless and sopping wet, he notices me. She circled slowly to stare at the leather-clad figure sitting atop his motorcycle. The visor of his helmet covered most of his face, leaving only his luscious lips and deep, jutting chin, covered in light stubble, exposed. What would they feel like against her lips? Between her legs? Her body tingled. “Earth to Rachel. Do you need a lift, or should I leave you here in the pouring rain?” Oh God, he knows my name. Since they’d never actually talked—she’d only heard him greeting his dates—her name on his lips came as a surprise. “Um, yes, I’d appreciate a ride.” On his Harley, and if she was lucky, in his bed. Anywhere. Her romance-first rule didn’t apply to him. He’d already seduced her plenty in her dreams. Remaining on his bike, he yanked a helmet from his saddlebag and held it out to her. “What happened to your pretty blouse?” Pretty blouse? He’d seen her earlier? “I….” Fluttering rolled through her stomach. “I don’t want to talk about it.” She grabbed the helmet from him, fit it over her soaked hair, and buckled the chinstrap. Straddling the seat behind him, she fumbled with her hands, wondering where to place them, no bar behind her to hold on to. Oh, what it would be like to wrap her arms around him, lean against his wide back covered in leather. But what if he didn’t want her to touch him? Luke pushed off from the curb. “I suggest you hold onto me or you’re going to fall off.”The bike lurched forward with a roar. She clasped her hands around his waist, her fingers coming together temptingly close to his manhood, cheek pressed to his cowskin jacket. His deep chuckle reverberated across her skin. “I told you to hang on.”And she could lean on him forever. Being so close to him with pure raw power between her legs moved her better than any fantasy she had ever created. But what is going to happen when he takes me home? Or will he invite me to his house instead? She pressed her lips together. Sure, she wanted to know what lay under his tight pants, but she refused to be another conquest. I can’t handle it. He drove into her driveway too soon, leaning the bike over enough for her to slip off. She removed the helmet and handed it back to him. “Thank you. I appreciate the ride.” Tucking the helmet away, he nodded. “You want to come over for coffee?” That and more. Though she refused to go anywhere in her state of disarray. “Um, no, I’m kind of wet.” “Another time, then?” She nodded. Shit, why did I say no? They could strip down together and have all kinds of fun. But he drove away before she had a chance to retract her words.

Hey, I started an author newsletter!

I've been meaning to for awhile now. I looked into a few programs and went with MailChimp. It's free and not too difficult to learn. I've been learning so many new things lately, I feel like I have tons of skills that aren't useful in any other capacity, but hey, it's great to learn new things, right? Keeps the brain working, lol.

I'd love it if you'd sign up! Just enter your email address in the little box to the right, below the Facebook box (where you can also "Like" me ;D ) where it says "Keep up with the magic and mayhem."

I promise, you won't regret it. As a subscriber, you'll be privvy to specials that others won't! And don't worry - you won't receive a newsletter every week. Probably closer to quarterly, though I may send out special editions on occasion.

Yep, another item checked off my Author To Do list. :)

Life and other things

Never order a new computer when you're set for a book release.

That is today's lesson gleaned from my experience. My desktop computer has been failing for at least a year, weakened by the malware attack which apparently damaged hardware. Not worth repairing, so my dear hubby said we could use some of our tax refund to replace it.

So I did, but the first one was a lemon. It happens. Not usually on the very first boot up, as happened to me, but I actually prefer lemons to make themselves known right away rather than after the warranty expires, lol. Back in the box it went.

The second replacement seems fine, if still a bit slow (I'm attributing this to McAfee, which I let the salesman talk me into). He was very nice, though - I insisted on Windows 7 so I wouldn't have to replace every last bit of software I own, and Dell accommodated me. He likewise gave me a tip to look online for drivers to update my old printer's software.

While I'm excited about the new computer, I'm also scrambling to catch up. The past few weeks have been crazy busy with the release of Cursed, which launched Decadent's new Tease line (yay!). But you never know how many files you accumulate - and in how many places - until you try to transfer them all. I'm still hunting down things I need.

I'm also excited that I splurged on Photoshop Elements 11, but now am finding that I need to relearn it. The last version I had was 3, and they've made lots of little changes.

Windows made lots of changes to its MovieMaker program too - I didn't realize, or I wouldn't have used my credit card points to buy Sony's Movie Sound Studio HD. My trailers are so blah compared to some of the wonderful book videos out there. But no matter which program I use, I'll have to learn (or, in MovieMaker's case, relearn) it.

Meanwhile, I had two story edits to finish this weekend - on my historical, Betting It All, and on Charmed, the second book in The Vitruvian Man series.

All that back and forth made me feel like I was accomplishing little. I did finish both story edits and sent those back to the editor. And I did get the PC in workable shape. Oh, and I managed to check off one more thing on my Author To Do list - a professional photo. I am camera shy normally, so believe me, this was a feat!

It's good to stop and take stock now and then. Too many times, I feel like I'm spinning my wheels and getting nowhere, but it's better to step back and take the longer view.

Any Photoshop or book video tips to share? :)

The other lesson for today is: Half a rainbow is better than none. Don't you agree?
