Cyrano rising and off to the printer
Finally, it's done and Cyrano's boldest adventure yet is about to begin. Yes, Pyrotechnicon is off to the printer and there's already lots of good internet buzz about it. I've been working on this thing with Adam for close to a year now and we're really looking forward to the launch at Conflux 8. Now all I have to do is set up the ebook...
In the meantime here's the front cover, spine and front

When is 'DRM free' not DRM free
When Book.ish launched a while back there was quite a bit of blog flutter about whether a book you 'bought' fromBook.ishcould actually be said to be 'owned' by you.Book.ishis a cloud reader service. Unlike Amazon or Kobo etc there is no file for you to download. What you 'buy' is access to the file which you can either read online or offline but, as bookish says:

Grand Master line up
So, I've decided on my 12 reads for the SF Grand Master challenge at Worlds Without End. My choice was a bit limited in some cases, because I'm reading them all on Kindle (the pbook is dead). Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting to grips with:
The Forever War - Joe Haldeman, Non-Stop - Brian Aldiss, The Deceivers - Alfred Bester, Deathbird Stories - Harlan Ellison, Double Meaning - Damon

SF Grand Master Challenge - what to read?
I came to this a little late, but the very cool Worlds Without End spec fic book site is running an SF Grand Master reading challenge. It started in January and the idea is to pick and read 12 Grand Master's novels in the year and review at least six. It's an opportunity for me to read some authors I already love and others who, for want of time and/ or motivation, I just haven't gotten around to

Verisimilitude
It's a beautifully formed word, isn't it? Playing on the lips like a kiss. It's also life and death for speculative fiction. I was reviewing some handouts I got from Terry Dowling at a spec fic writing course many moons ago. Terry advocates a huge amount of thought should go into building imagined worlds. Some might say he takes it to an almost ridiculous degree, but you only need to read one of

Just caught up with the Aurealis Awards' Peter McNamara Award for Excellence blurb. It was great that Galactic Sububia won. They do a fantastic job, and it's nice to see the Aurealis Awards look past the written word.
But. I just read the award rationale. I think the AAs need a fact checker:
Galactic Suburbia was one of the first Australian podcasts of SF literature and
