What do you get when a reformed badboy cyberjockey meets a HAWT assassin? (New release review: Operation Fury)

I am the first to admit, I am REALLY bad at remembering to do reviews. I love reading, so I really should do this more. Anyway, today's review is for Operation Fury, by Susan Hayes. Now, not only is Susan one of my favourite peeps in the world, but she writes AWESOME books.

Operation Fury is the third book in the Nova Force series and follows Eric and Nyx. Eric's a bad boy cyberjockey now on the straight and narrow and Nyx is a badass cyborg designed to kill.

To start off with, Susan's world building is second to none. I absolutely love the world of the Drift and Nova Force. Her settings and locations are so vividly drawn that you literally can imagine yourself there. Hell, I'd move there in a heartbeat!

The story follows Eric as he attempts to fulfil a promise he made to someone he cared about, to find her sister Nyx and free her from her captors. Even with very little to go on, he keeps going, and his determination to keep that promise AND stay on the straight and narrow (not falling off into the seriously murky world he used to inhabit) is wonderful. But that's not to say he's all goody-two-shoes, he has some tricks up his sleeve when it comes to getting what he wants and not just with Nyx, who blows his mind in all the best ways.

Nyx for her part is wonderfully drawn and you can feel her struggle leaping off the page there. She wants… needs revenge, but she needs love as well, even if she won't admit it to herself. Seeing these two struggle toward love is beautiful. As is the bit where Eric totally screws up and needs to put things right (spoilers sweetie, so I won't tell you anymore. You'll have to read!)

All in all, even though Susan's books are a one-click for me, Operation Fury is a 5 star, highly recommended read! Go buy today and get addicted to this world!

She’s fighting for survival. He’s fighting for her soul.

Nyx was created to be the perfect killer, with death and violence encoded in her DNA. After years of tests, torments, and trials designed to push her to her breaking point, she’s survived by focusing on one thing –revenge.

Nova Force investigator Eric Erben lost someone he cared about. Now he’s on a mission to fulfill her last request – free her sister from the shadowy group holding her captive. Rescuing Nyx from her captors is the easy part. Saving her from herself will be a battle only love can win.

What’s your hero’s idea of a perfect first date? (Author Interview: Susan Hayes)

So today I have the pleasure of interviewing one of my favourite people in the world. If we weren't different sides of the pond, then Susan and I would be joined at the hip and if you like my writing, you'll LOVE hers (I certainly do!!). Today we managed to get time to sit down and talk about CHANCE OF A LIFETIME, which is Susan's story in the LOVED IN SPACE anthology out in March 2020!!

So…Susan, tell us about your hero?

My hero, Erik, has been quietly lurking in the background of my Drift series almost from the first book. He’s adopted the Nova Club and the people who work there as his home and family, and he’d do anything to protect them. Like many who come to the Drift, he has a past he doesn’t talk about. His friends would say he’s fun, flirtatious, and a good man to have at your side when things go sideways. (And at the Nova Club, sideways is a way of life.)

What’s your favourite line from the story and why?

She paused for a moment, sifting through the data and calculating the odds she was correct. Seventy-two percent. She’d have to clarify. “Are you asking me out?”

This is one of my favourite lines.  My heroine, Chance, isn’t good with people. She’s better with numbers, so when Erik asks to go to dinner with him, she runs the numbers and still can’t be sure that’s what’s happening. Her learning how to deal with people, good and bad, is part of her story arc.

How would your hero/heroine finish this statement? – When all else fails…

Erik would say that when all else fails, take cover and start shooting.

What’s your favourite muse fuel?

Coffee in the mornings and diet cola in the afternoons.

Is this book part of a series? Tell us about it…

Chance of a Lifetime is part of the Drift Series, a world where cyborgs and aliens live side by side with humans – and everything is available, if the price is right.  This series is about a group of cyborgs and their friends finding love and hope while fighting for a future free of corporate control.

What’s your hero’s drink of choice?

Star furies, a speciality drink served only at the Nova Club.

What’s your hero’s idea of a perfect first date?

There aren’t a lot of options for date locations on a space station, but Erik thought he’d picked the perfect spot – a sim-pod program that had everything: a romantic setting, a picnic for two, and a locking door. Too bad things didn’t go according to plan…

Check out more about the Drift Series over on Susan's Website!!

No risk. No reward.

Erik O’Neill has finally stopped looking for trouble. Now, trouble’s come looking for him. After years of cage fighting, Erik is ready to step away from the Nova Club’s fight ring and into a new role – security for the club he calls home. All his plans change when a lovely loner starts visiting the club, and he finds himself caught between the need to safeguard his home and his friends and his desire to protect the woman laying claim to his heart.

Chance is a cyborg with a secret. If the wrong people find her, she’ll lose her shot at having the life she dreams of – or any life at all. She’s come to the Drift looking for allies, but when she meets Erik, she discovers he can offer her more than safety. He’s her chance at happiness, too. When time runs out, she’ll have to make a choice that will change her life forever – keep running, or turn to the one man her heart tells her she can trust.

Major Dean Steele didn’t run quick enough and now he’s in a cage. Again. Only instead of expecting him to fight and kill like the monster they turned him into, now they expect him to run and die in a hunt with the odds stacked against him. But there’s one thing they don’t know… the beautiful little human woman they’ve put him with is his mate. And that changes everything.

In a hunt with everything on the line, there’s no monster more dangerous than a man fighting for redemption… and love.

He’s been loyal to the empire all his life. Will he betray everything he knows to save the woman he loves?

To celebrate sending this off to my editor finally, this week's snippet is again from RESCUED BY HER ALIEN PROTECTOR. (Please note, snippet is completely unedited and will probably contain things that will make editors cry!)

Draanth. As a move to get them all grouped together, it was slick and impressive, one even Danaar hadn’t seen coming. But not as impressive as the heavy pistols the human had managed to produce out of seemingly nowhere.

Sparky caught Danaar’s eye and smiled. “Chameleon holsters. When you absolutely, positively do not want anyone to know the heat you’re packing. I’d have one built into a jock strap but… you know, that would be false advertising and I wouldn’t wanna scare anyone.”

Danaar had no idea what a jock strap was, but the less than subtle jerk of the other male’s hips left him in no doubt as to the meaning behind the description.

That thought was quickly swept aside though by the stone cold look in the human’s eyes as he aimed at them. The jovial, joking manner was gone as though it had never been. Danaar had faced death many times on the battlefield so he knew it’s face. And it was looking at him right now.

“Now, I’ll repeat the question for the slower among us, because I’m nice like that. What. The. Fuck. Do. You. Want?”

Prepared to put her life on the line, she didn’t expect to lose her heart.

Vice President Madison Cole is used to having a target on her back. Being captured by aliens? An acceptable risk to get what she needs. What she didn’t count on was falling for the ‘enemy’, a handsome alien warrior with a hero’s heart.

Before they can have their happily ever after though, she must return home one last time…

He’s been loyal to the empire all his life. Will he betray everything he knows to save the woman he loves?

Danaar K’Vass is on the brink of gaining everything he’s ever wanted. A position as War Commander in the Latharian Empire and a mate, the beautiful human female, Madison Cole.

But enemies conspiring in the shadows mean Madison is taken from him, and thrown in a brutal human prison, he faces an impossible choice….

Break his vows to the empire and risk an intergalactic war… or lose his mate forever.

There’s no monster more dangerous than a man fighting for love…

He woke in a cage. Again. Well, fuck it, that escape had gone to hell in a hand basket. Hadn’t it?

Dean Steele groaned as he opened his eyes, blinking until they cooperated and focused on the scene above him. Sure enough, bars stood between him and the ceiling high above. Yeah. He could smell the rust and metal. Once you’d been in one cage, smelled one, it was unmistakable. With a sigh, he shut his eyes again, not making an effort to move from where he was sprawled on his back.

Why bother? What was the point? He lived and died at the will of others and had done so from the moment he’d been infected months ago.

He was stupid if he thought any differently. That he could affect his fate. Negate it somehow. He wasn’t human now. Why should he expect to be treated as one?

For a while, there had been hope. He’d thought Alpha Three could do what he hadn’t been able to do on his own and beat the system. Beat the Project. There were eight of them. Eight fully converted lycans doing something they shouldn’t have been doing… operating as a pack.

More than that, they’d done something that had totally put the shits up the Project. They’d developed the ability to partially shift. Somehow they’d gained the ability to tap into their animal side while still retaining their human intelligence. It wasn’t supposed to be possible. All the eggheads said they would be little more than animals, always ruled by their primal sides. His lips almost curved into a smile. How wrong they’d been. He’d have loved to have been a fly on that lab wall when they’d discovered the truth.

But Alpha Three, with all their talents, hadn’t been able to give him his freedom. Not even with those freaky new intelligent re-animates on their side. Because here he was in a fucking cage again, locked up like the animal he was.

Hay scratched at his bare back, but he ignored it and the hot surge of anger that wanted to escape his chest in a feral snarl. No point. He didn’t move, not to scratch the itch or to investigate the smell of rust from the bars around him.

At one point, he would have. He’d have tested each and every one of the bars with his Project-enhanced strength to see if he could break out. Not now. There was no point. They’d just track him down. Eventually they’d throw him in a ring again and he’d have to fight. Kill again.

The killing never stopped.

Not for him.

Agony ate at his soul but he ignored it too. Sighing, he let the darkness in his blood wash over him and the emptiness soothe the pain. Perhaps that was all he was worth keeping alive for. To kill.

He’d been a soldier once. Protected his country with pride. Put his body and blood on the line, not because he hated his enemy but because he loved what he protected with every ounce of his being. He’d gotten his men through Iraq… Afghanistan… shit holes he didn’t even have names for and if he did, he wouldn’t have been allowed to admit he’d been there anyway. He’d gotten them through all that, only for them to die in pain at the hands of the Project.

Sounds from around him caught his attention even though he tried to ignore them. Without his permission, his analytical brain—the part of him that had made him such a good soldier—kicked in. The soft scuffles and small noises told the tale of others around him. The rattle of a loose bar said they were also in cages.

His sense of smell got in on the act. There were lycans and, surprisingly, bloods—both werewolves and vampires—around him. Cracking an eyelid, he turned his head to look to the side. Sure enough, a blood sat in the cage opposite with enough space between for a small walkway.

He frowned. Interesting. The Project normally used bloods as heavies although he had been forced to fight some in the cage—the underground recorded fights the Project used to make money on the side. But from what he’d gathered from the guards’ chatter, those bloods were the weaker ones from earlier experiments. They weren’t nearly as useful to the Project as the newer versions. Didn’t matter. They died just as easy as the others.

He moved his head, his gaze scanning the cages on either side of the blood. Then he stopped dead on a cage two down. There were humans here as well. Steele dragged a breath in, rolling the air over his tongue to isolate the scents. They weren’t just human, but fully human. Not those who had been infected and were undergoing conversion.

Why would they have full humans here? If it was a cage fight setup, they wouldn’t last more than five seconds. Humans were little more than prey for any of the Project’s creations. It didn’t make sense.

Rolling to sit up with the ease and economy of movement that marked his blood side, Steele looked around. The cage to his right was empty with the door open, but the one on his left was occupied. Sanders, one of the Alpha Three lycans, lay on his side, eyes closed.

“Hey…” Steele frowned and scanned his memories of the attack on the Project when Sanders and the rest of his pack had rescued Steele and the others in the ring. Although, to be fair, they hadn’t been after Steele himself but rather the lycan he’d been fighting.

He latched on to a name.

“Hey… Joe… wake up.”

What type of Writer are you?

I was asked recently for a bit of creative writing advice. I wouldn't consider myself an expert since I'm still learning, and I always will be. There's always something new to learn with writing, or hone as much as you can. Then when you think you've gotten it, it's like you level up and you start all over again! But that's good… in my opinion, that's how it should be and when you stop learning, well…

So… I'm going to talk a little bit about types of writers. I personally am a combination. I am half plotter and half panster (this type is sometimes called a discovery writer).

Alien Surgeons' Seduction book coverFor me, that means I work out my basic overall plot for a book first. I have my characters, I know where they are at the beginning and a basic idea of how the big plot will unravel. That's it.

In Alien Surgeon’s Seduction I knew Isan was a healer, I knew Shannon was a human colonel and I knew Isan had a secret (he actually had two and I didn’t know about the second until I was 2/3rd’s of the way through the book!) and I knew at some point he was going to have to make a BIG sacrifice but that was it.

Then I make notes, working out what happens in my story and in what order. There is something called a story beat, things that HAVE to happen in a story for it to make sense and for it to be emotionally satisfying to read. For romance, these are things include things like the Meet Cute (literally when the characters meet), midpoint intimacy, the breakup, the black moment, the HEA, etc. I tend to use an adapted version of Gwen Hayes’ – Romancing the Beat outline (https://amzn.to/2Ng1960).

But… I don’t fill everything out. My plot outline is never set in stone. At least, not all of it. At first, I will only set the first quarter or so of the plot down. Then I write. I need to discover what the characters are all about, how they react on the page and to each other. Once I have that first couple of scenes down, I have a better handle on who they are, and that’s where the real fun begins! Sometimes I can then go on and plot the entire rest of the book but others, I can only plot a quarter at a time, waiting new discoveries in the next section. Which is sometimes frustrating as hell (especially when characters throw curve balls and you end up with a subplot that extends your wordcount) and sometimes quite liberating because it’s exciting and fresh!!

So, for you writing peeps. What kind of writer are you? Plotter? Panster / discovery writer? or somewhere in between?

NB – I would just like to say, there is NO wrong way to write. You write how works for YOU.

NB2 – For grammar and punctuation there is VERY definitely a right way and that’s why we have editors!!

Do you love werewolf books? How about werewolf super soldiers?

Her scent calls to him. She's his. Now he has to keep her alive.

Jack Harper was a soldier, a good one… then the Project decided to play god. Now he has permanent anger management issues and a monster living inside him. Used as a weapon, he's been waiting for a chance to strike back. But the Project are onto him.

Ruled unstable, a kill order is passed down on Jack and his squad and they are transferred to St.Margarets. Play-things for the head docs until a bullet to the back of the head deals with them for good. But Jack isn't going down that easily, not when the delicate scent he'd been waiting for all his life wraps around him.

The delicate human woman is his mate. And he'll fight anything the Project throws at him to save her.

A hospital manager with a heart of gold. A soldier with a dark secret.

Lillian's life is… dull. The highlights of her day, other than her skinny hot chocolate, are the hunky guards who work in the military wing. It's classified and way above her pay grade, but she can't help feeling sorry for the hollow-eyed men and women they shuffle past reception. Then a late night emergency is wheeled in, his abdomen shredded and covered in blood. They’re not an emergency room but she can’t turn him away and risk a death on her hands.

Unable to get the handsome soldier out of her mind, Lillian sneaks into the restricted area and finds herself thrust into a world where nothing makes sense. A world where men aren't always men, the dead walk, and her handsome soldier is way more than he seems…

He was a soldier, until the project got hold of him. Now he’s a monster created in a lab.

Darce is this close to escaping his creators—until another of the Project’s experiments stops him in his tracks. Not because she has the power to hold him, but because he instantly recognizes the impossible. The vampire female is his mate.

Allowing her to bring him in is his only choice—and possibly the last mistake of his life. Enemies or lovers, it doesn’t matter. When they discover that the Project is hiding yet more secrets, they must work together to bring it down…or die in the attempt.

Escaping from the Project comes with a price: the life of another.

Once a soldier, Toni is now less than human. A blood-infected subject, aka vampire, she lives to serve the command of the powers that be, but that hasn’t stopped her looking for a way out. But the only way the Project will let any of them go is in a body bag… until a lycan unit escapes and her boss offers her a deal. Bring in a lycan and she goes free.

Can she trust his word? Can she afford not to if there’s a chance she can escape and live again? Can she… when the Lycan she’s supposed to bring in becomes her very reason for living?

Product Warnings : Contains a cocky wolf who won’t take no for an answer, an ice-queen losing her cool and a pack full of hunky werewolves bent on rescue. With added zombie spidermen.

There is life after death. No one told him it would be the same one…

Brett was a soldier, until the Project killed him. Now he's finding that life after death isn't so hot. With the Project base destroyed, he and his team have been tasked with running down and destroying a group of rogue vampires. Unfortunately the vampires always seem to be one step ahead.

Then they start kidnapping women. Whatever reasons they have, Brett knows it can’t be good. When team catch a break and arrive just after the last victim is taken, they pursue with a vengeance. If they can get to her before the creatures kill her, then they might just figure out what the vampires are up to…

Until she drops into his arms, half converted, and he realizes that, vampire or not, he’ll kill to protect her…

She was planning their divorce. Her ex was planning her funeral.

Painted as a gold-digging scarlet woman by her powerful ex, the darling son of their town, Julia Collier is despised by all. She can't even shop in the local store without suffering abuse from her fellow townsfolk, and that's before the late night calls or her ex's bully-boys following her.

When her home is broken into, Julia realizes that there are worst things out there in the night. Things like the vampires holding her and other women captive in some kind of sick breeding experiment. Bitten and wounded, she needs to escape, survive, and bring help for the others…

Help comes from an unlikely source. Soldiers who claim to be from the same facility that created the vampires who took her. Soldiers who claim not to be human at all but the undead. Hot, ripped zombies? And she’s rapidly falling for one… what woman would fall for a zombie?

Unless the undead aren't dead at all, but something more than human, from a world she'll need all her wits and new abilities to survive the battle between the undead…and the dead.

She needed the story. She didn’t expect to run for her life in a world where vampires and werewolves are real…

The homeless are going missing, and reporter Max Harvey can just smell the story. None of her usual contacts will talk to her. They’re scared, which sets her reportery senses tingling. Deciding to go undercover is a stroke of genius…

Until she’s snatched with the others and thrown into a world she never expected. A world of government conspiracies and genetic experiments where supernatural creatures exist and the real monsters are the humans trying to kill her.

In a desperate race through the forest, she must trust a dangerous man who is more than he seems. A broken hero who isn’t strictly human but who makes her heart sing like no other…

No one walks away from the Project. They run…
