"8 Things Twilight Has Ruined" article
This has been making the rounds, and at first I hesitated to post it because I do have several friends who adore Twilight, but...sorry, these things are too funny and too sadly true.
8 Things Twilight Has Ruined (Besides Vampires)
When I noticed number 6 was "Washington State," I laughed out loud. What they say is so true: people from out of state frequently ask if we live near Forks and/or have been to Forks. And, as the article also reports with perfect truth, "the state is so big that no ma...

Pillars, Thrones, and probably Daleks again
Amazing--I actually care about some stuff coming up on TV in the relatively near future:
Starz is airing the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, beginning tomorrow. I read the novel by Ken Follett about fourteen years ago, and unlike most novels I read fourteen years ago, I actually remember some of it. I know I liked it. So I'll be curious to see that--and am especially avid given that Rufus Sewell is in it. (Playing a good guy, no less!)
HBO, as all good fantasy geeks know, is hard at work o...

Delectable new fragrance house: Infusion Organique
At my godsend shop, knows perfume, I recently got a little card with three free samples from the perfumers at Infusion Organique. And, wonder of wonders, the scents are all lovely and wearable--and affordable and organic on top of that.
The three scents I tried and my reviews...
Buddha's Fig: Top notes: fig leaf, green nuances (including rose geranium and lemongrass); middle: hyacinth, iris, fig; bottom: woods, amber. To my nose, this is almost exactly like Diptyque's divine Philosykos--a green...

Seeking Edinburgh expert!
I am seeking a beta-reader of sorts for a novel set in Edinburgh, and due to be published as an ebook within a couple of months (hurray!). What I need is someone who knows Scottish speech habits and Edinburgh very well, so you can catch any errors I've made on those counts.
You wouldn't have to worry about plot, character development, formatting, or grammar, except within Scottish characters' dialogue, perhaps. You'd merely read through and see if any Scotland-related mistakes jump out at you...

And this is how I made the Seattle Times at last...
Seattle mom honored as a really bad writer
A West Seattle woman won the 2010 Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest — the foremost national contest dedicated to bad writing.
By Maureen O'Hagan
Seattle Times staff reporter
Without the gerbil, she'd be nothing.
Well, not nothing exactly. But Molly Ringle would likely not have won the 2010 Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest — the foremost national contest dedicated to bad writing. And not just any old bad writing. The contest requires a single sentence, so bad it'...

(Molly Ringle), with apologies, disclaimers, and gratitude for J.K. Rowling.
CHAPTER ONE: THE DURSLEY'S DELIGHTFUL ABODE
HARRY: (yawn) Magic.
The DURSLEYS fling breakfast everywhere in panic.
UNCLE VERNON: Go to your room! How dare you mention your offensive, abnormal lifestyle?
HARRY: It's not a choice, you bigot! I was born this way.
CHAPTER TWO: HARRY'S ROOM
HARRY finds DOBBY sitting on his bed.

Summer solstice poem in two haiku verses
Bent to smell a rose;
dew hidden in its petals
left my lips dampened.
Think that was the god
of summer, stealing a kiss.
Saucy young fellow.

Two Doctor Who vids to the same song
http://di-br.livejournal.com/232363.html - This one for those who fancy the Doctor most (features Nine and Ten)...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD9elxsc5sY - ...and this one for those who fancy the Master.
Both are to Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" (which I've always liked inordinately much), and fit the song's grandiose quality quite well. Also, though I haven't caught up to the newest Who yet, these are totally making me want to!

Book rec: The Love Thing
I just finished reading a novel that was so charming and would appeal to so many of you, I figured I better formally recommend it here: The Love Thing, by Chris Delyani. It's the plot of Pride and Prejudice, more or less, but with all the main players being gay males in modern San Francisco. That's probably all I need to say to have several of you running to add it to your wish list. Delyani's writing is beautiful and funny, and the story is romantic, deftly managing to be realistic for the m...

Not the kind of Pacemakers Gerry had in mind
Vignette on how the times have changed:
Scene: Steve and I are listening to a CD collection of British Invasion hits from the '60s--Dusty Springfield, Donovan, Tom Jones, etc.
Steve: These all have an "insurance commercial" type of feel.
Me: I was thinking "granola commercial."
Steve: Yeah. Same thing, basically.
But don't be offended. It'll happen to our generation too. In another 30 years, they'll be playing Death Cab for Cutie and the Arcade Fire as the background music for insurance and granol...
