Detroit in the Dark Redux
This is what I saw yesterday evening about ten minutes before the skies opened, giving us a deluge of Biblical proportions. I’d been expecting it all day because the weather was 90+ degrees and the air was saturated with humidity.
Unfortunately, I didn’t want to be trapped in Walmart during the storm which was exactly what happened! I spent twenty minutes wandering the aisles an waiting for the rain to let up. When it did, I dashed for my car, getting soaked in the process.
Still, every cloud has a silver lining. We didn’t lose power, but the school did which gave my girls the day off. And while there wasn’t a rainbow, I did see a lovely glimmer of sunset.

Detroit in the Dark
I read a fascinating article on the Michigan Public Radio webpage today. It’s all about Bruce Giffin, a Detroit man with a pickup truck, a dog, and a camera. The article compares Giffin to one of my favorite artists, Edward Hopper.
These photos are eerie, but in my opinion, they perfectly capture Detroit’s atmosphere. Here, there’s beauty amid the grittiness. I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I do.

My New Bag – Giveaway!!
My New Bag giveaway is in honor of my newest book series as well as a really cool bag I bought from an Etsy artist.
First, the book!
I’ve started a new urban fantasy series called Bit Parts (because its about vampires and actresses – both of whom are interested in bit parts….). The first book in the series, Stage Fright, came out in July. Here’s the blurb:
Cassandra Jaber’s dream of acting becomes a nightmare when she blacks out on stage during a private audition. She awakes, sore and disoriented, with a three-hour hole in her memory and a crippling fear of the spotlight. Although she tries to piece her shattered life back together, she remains at the mercy of the dark secret locked away in her mind. But when a mysterious man, who calls himself a guardian of the night, rescues her from a terrifying attacker, Cassandra’s eyes are opened to a fantastic world she never guessed existed. She soon realizes that her midnight rescuer holds the key to her salvation. And her heart. My other new bag is a very cool tote designed by CreativeJenV that I purchased at a fun store in Ann Arbor, MI, called Hipsters Underground. I LOVE this bag (and the store!)
Not only is this an adorable purse, but it’s st
urdy, washable, and the perfect size. It fits all my junk, plus a Kindle or an i Pad. There are several pockets inside, one of which is large enough for my smart phone. It closes with a nice, magnetic button. Seriously, I fell in love the minute I saw it. That’s why I just had to share one of these bags with one lucky winner!
Here’s the giveaway!

How Grows my Garden
Unpredictable Michigan weather strikes again! Our state slogan is, “If you don’t like the weather, stick around for ten minutes because it will change.”
Last year, we were hot and dry. This year was very cool and wet. The veggies in my husband’s garden didn’t fare well, but my flowers flourished.
I’m not one to baby my gardens. Basically, I dig a hole, toss in a plant, and walk away. I hardly ever water (read: never water). And fertilize? Please. Those poor plants are on their own. Generally, things turn out all right because we get a decent amount of rain. This year, however, the excess water made things prettier than ever.
A former neighbor gave me the hibiscus plant. Its gigantic, fuchsia blooms are about the size of a dinner plate. I also plant sunflowers in the box outside our family room because that part of the house gets no protection from the sun, and the plants become a perfect shade (not to mention that the birds love them!) This year, however, the sunflowers kind of took over! As you can see, they’re taller than the house.
Hmmm…maybe I should write a sci-fi eco-thrilller. Attack of the 40′ Sunflowers.
