Twas the Night Before Birdmas
Twas the night before Christmas,
when all through the cage,
Not a creature was stirring,
no avian rage.
The birds were all roosted,
asleep on their perch,
The peace all-encompassing,
just like a church.
The chicks, they were nestled
all snug in their nests,
No visions of felines disturbing
their rests,
And I in my shirt
from the local bird club
Was contemplating a nice long
soak in the tub,
When out of one cage
there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the couch
to see what was the matter.
Away to the bird room
I flew like a flash,
Tore off the cage cover,
teeth starting to gnash.
The moon on the breast,
of my white face girl Nellie
Shone some light on the scene,
felt a clench in my belly.
Nellie was having a cockatiel fit,
other birdies encouraging her, just a bit.
Flapping her wings with much bumping and bashing,
engaging in crazy cockatiel night thrashing.
I turned on a light
and whispered soft words
About what I’d like
to do with these birds.
But they thought my tone
of voice was just keen,
Soon settled down and
all started to preen.
I sprang up the stairs,
to my birds waved good-bye,
And shaking my head,
I heaved a great sigh.
Stella Senegal exclaimed
ere I was out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all,
let me give you a bite”.

Christmas is Coming
Christmas is coming
the geese are not getting fat
but we seem to be!
Canada Geese on the Reservoir
sorry – listening to the geese behind my house and thinking about holiday baking – at least that is my excuse!!!

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
…
I’ve heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
Thank you to my daughter (nepotism) who suggested Emily and Dickinson as names for:

Emily and Dickinson
and here we have Shrek and Princess Fiona, thanks to Barbara Vasquez and her granddaughter, Denise, without whom they would have been ‘those green cartoon ogre characters’.
Welcome to the Bird and Basset Plantation to four more rescued birds!

Reminder Haiku
Birds come tomorrow.
Anybody got some good
ideas for names?
Peek at my blog from December 11th for contest! I will send one of my books – maybe BIRDKU – maybe another one – to the winner! I will decide once I observe their personalities and confirm at least the budgies are male and female!
