Getting ready for Re-Innovate...

There’s a time and place for theory. For me, now is not the time or the place. As I’m looking for ways to lead inside of a new vision while dismantling old systems, I’m looking for highly practical training that’s short, to the point and shared by someone who’s been there. Apparently, there’s more people who who feel the same way.

So far, over 400 church leaders and volunteers are planning to join us at the ReInnovate Conference in one week (it’s next Tuesday and Wednesday). It’s a high learning environment hosted by church leaders for church leaders. I’m prepping this week for three breakouts I’ll be facilitating:

Simple communication to get the word out
Taming social media
Less control, more influence

If you live in driving distance (I’m talking to you Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky), grab a team mate and get here. There’s a spot for you. You’re not hassling with last minute airfare prices. The drive is peaceful and serene. I’m pretty sure you’ll thank me.

Sometimes the picture you’re drawing isn’t telling...

Sometimes the picture you’re drawing isn’t telling the story you think it is. Look where WHERE magazine placed the cover photo. How much do you want to bet an intern did this on purpose? Yeah. Me, too. (photo find via @jasonpowell & @lukelewis)

You’ve seen artist’s renderings of court...

You’ve seen artist’s renderings of court room proceedings before, I’m sure. But, have you ever seen an artist’s rendering of one of my workshops? Well, thanks to 13 year old Emmi Meyer, NOW you can say you have.

Based on how skinny my legs are in this illustration—she obviously nailed it.

Well played, mom.

And just like that, 30% of my worries about being a parent in the internet age just disappeared.

Transitions: redefining personal & corporate wins...

Earlier this year, I asked my friend Mark Waltz to talk a few minutes with some leaders about navigating transitons. I jotted down a few notes. Found them again today. Helpful as ever. Thanks, Mark.

You are the most qualified person to set yourself up for the win. Nobody knows what’s best for you better than you. Remember, the relationships inside any transition are the hardest to protect. Bearing down and focusing on the task alone is when people get hurt. Don’t skip these crucial steps.

Sequence. Pay attention to sequencing. It matters. Don’t let go too early. The hand-off is on you. Are you setting up the baton pass so the person running the next leg will win? You were not hired to juggle—you were hired to move the ball down the field. If you are juggling with no sequence, it’s a circus act.
Embrace. Change is happening, embrace it. Don’t play the hero role. Don’t play the victim. (“I keep my cape tucked.” Yeah, right.) When you play the hero or victim, you discount your own ability to work smart and balance well. You also diminish your team’s confidence in leadership.
Empower. Work with and empower team around you. Avoid the two extremes: holding too tightly and throwing it away too fast. Don’t power up and take it all on yourself. Don’t isolate and put other people at a distance with the attitude “I’m going to prove I can do this without anyone’s help.”
