The Avengers: Infinity War teaser worked, but there’s something else I’d really like to see

For a teaser, the new Avengers: Infinity War trailer did the job for me, although some of the CGI seemed a bit dodgier than usual (Spider-Man, etc.). While I have yet to see the Justice League movie (I’ll have to wait for the home release at this point), I never did get a sense of a truly epic all-characters battle based on the previews. It seems/seemed “small,” particularly given what we already had with the previous Avengers movies, although I will admit that’s a high bar to meet. With this new teaser, I feel confident based on Marvel’s previous track record that we’ll get that kind of all-out conflict many of us dreamed of as kids (and frankly never thought we’d get with live action–thank you technological progress).

I think it’s fair to say the super hero thing is pretty much nailed these days. Frankly what I’d love to see now is a serious take on Dungeons & Dragons with the same budget/production values as your average blockbuster super hero movie. While there was the Lord of the Rings series, I still really want a true D&D experience (and Heroes of the Lance would do just fine in terms of actual characters to work with). It goes without saying that what’s been done to D&D in terms of movies and TV to this point has been a travesty, but then super hero movies used to be pretty bad in that regard as well, so there’s always hope.

How Atari 2600 controls and switches map to the 2017 Atari Flashback products

In my latest book, Atari Flashback: The Essential Companion:

we cover how to play 67 different first party Atari 2600 games, including Fun Facts, Tip & Tricks, and more. In addition, the first chapter covers Atari 2600 history, and the second chapter covers the current line-up of AtGames’ Atari Flashback products. As part of that second chapter, I tried to detail how the controls and switches mapped to that of the various consoles and handheld unit from AtGames. Unfortunately, as is par for the course with these things, some of those tables were cut for space considerations. Fortunately, I can reproduce them here. Enjoy!

Atari Flashback 8 Gold (and Activision Edition)
Atari Flashback Classic Game Console
Atari Flashback Portable Game Player

Hitbit, stylish retro console, hits Kickstarter

Design of Things, a Milan-based design firm, has just introduced a stylish retro console on Kickstarter called Hitbit. Features of the all-in-one tabletop joystick include:  HDMI, bluetooth, wi-fi, and a 2400 MIPS CPU.

Due to something of a language barrier, it’s a bit unclear exactly what’s on offer here, but it seems like this will likely be a Raspberry Pi-like or equivalent processor powered unit with possibly some pre-loaded emulators. You’ll almost certainly have to add your own games.

Whether the high asking price is ultimately worth it is up to you, but here are the full features they tout (text direct from the Kickstarter):

Quality case in refined wood by Alpi.
Last generation powerful mini computer (about 2400 MIPS) with no fan (you will not be hassled by noises).
Expandable with USB or wi-fi: find a new exicting game and load it on Hitbit.
2 players mode with bluetooth: connect your favourite modern wireless controllers and play with your friends.
HDMI digital output: connect it to your new TV without any adapter.
Emulates different arcades and consoles machines, allowing you to virtually play thousands of old-school games.
The joystick and the 8 play buttons (6 on top and 2 on the back) are configured to be used with most of the classic games.
