Freewrite (2nd Gen) smart distraction-free typewriter now available

Although the second generation version of the Freewrite distraction-free smart typewriter has been available for several months already, I realized that in that time I failed to officially note the presence of this update to Armchair Arcade‘s readership. As described in my review of the first generation version of the Freewrite, this unique product is a fantastic way to minimize distractions and get down to the business of writing. The second generation version is not only available in an additional color (Limited Edition cream), but also features several key improvements. These improvements include double the already super long battery life of several weeks and tweaks to the similarly already superb Cherry MX Brown-based keyboard.

While this is by no means an inexpensive device, it is a premium offering, and definitely a worthwhile investment if you fancy yourself a writer. This is a great tool for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), poetry, short stories, or any other type of writing where you want to generate a lot of content with as few distractions as possible.

COUPONGet $25 off a Freewrite by clicking this link. You can also finance for as low as $15 per month.

Play historic LCD, VFD, and LED-based handheld games emulated right in your browser!

The Internet Archive has done it again! Joining their efforts to archive, preserve, and emulate various videogame and computer platforms, are a plethora of LCD, VFD, and LED-based handheld games (here’s the link). As Jason Scott put it in a recent blog post:

It’s been a little over 4 years since the Internet Archive started providing emulation in the browser from our software collection; millions of plays of games, utilities, and everything else that shows up on a screen have happened since then. While we continue to refine the technology (including adding Webassembly as an option for running the emulations), we also have tried to expand out to various platforms, computers, and anything else that we can, based on the work of the emulation community, especially the MAME Development Team.

For a number of years, the MAME team has been moving towards emulating a class of hardware and software that, for some, stretches the bounds of what emulation can do, and we have now put up a collection of some of their efforts here at archive.org.

These are a definite blast, with mostly simple, straightforward gameplay and often based on some pretty far out subjects. Even if you weren’t lucky enough to be around during the heyday of these systems in the late 1970s through early 1990s, I still recommend checking this out to see some of what was going on in this area at the time.

Review: Geekerbuy Electronic Writing Tablet

While I’ve liked the popular Boogie Board writing tablet series, there has always been room for some competition. The Geekerbuy Electronic Writing Tablet provides that competition with a generous 12 inch screen format at a great price.

The front of the box.

I’m reviewing the Blue, but it’s also available in Green, and an even less expensive Pink 8.5 inch model.

The back of the box.

The back of the box.

Inside the cardboard packaging you’ll find the tablet, plastic stylus (your fingernail or just about any plastic object will also work), and required pre-installed coin-cell battery, which is good for about 100,000 page refreshes before needing to be replaced.

The front, writing surface.

It’s interesting to note that while the screen size is larger than most other products of this type, it’s still nice and thin at approximately .19 inches, and it only weighs about 94 grams.

Operation is as simple as you’d expect. Write on the screen (preferably with the stylus) and it stays until you press the erase (garbage can) button.

While this does not include any type of mounting hardware or magnets for use on a refrigerator (all stuff you can procure and add yourself), there are a few interesting extra features. First, is a slot that allows you to insert the stylus so the unit can sit at an angle for easier reference. Another is a built-in ruler on the back of the screen, which is definitely a logical and thoughtful use for otherwise dead space. Finally, there’s a built-in stylus holder at the bottom of the unit. Shockingly, not all of these types of devices have that seemingly obvious latter feature.

You can vary line thickness. Shown is the thinnest thickness.

As a single page sketch pad or note taker/leaver, these kinds of devices are invaluable and really do save on paper. The Geekerbuy unit is a truly great value for a screen size in this category of product.

Pluses:

– Large size

– Great value

– Battery included

– Replaceable battery

– Onboard stylus holder

– Ability to angle screen with stylus slot

Minuses:

– No mounting hardware

– No built-in stand

– No lock key to prevent accidental deletions

Summary:

The 12 inch Geekerbuy proves a great value in electronic writing tablets.

Thanks to Geekerbuy for the review unit.
