Episode 3 – Historical Fiction Is All About Today!

Guiseppe Verdi by Giovanni Boldini

Guiseppe Verdi by Giovanni Boldini

Consider the notion that historical fiction is really all about today. The example I’ll use is actually from an opera – Nabucco by Guiseppe Verdi. It’s one of the most beautiful choruses ever composed.

You’ll find out how an opera two centuries old told a story from ancient times that motivated Italians to rise up against their oppressors, made a national hero of Verdi, inspired a national anthem, offended the Berlusconi government in recent times, informed a cultural protest, and reminds people today of their deep sense of national pride and destiny.

What’s ahead – Our guest for the next podcast – Episode 4 – will be Tom Sant, who went from being an overworked English professor to a global marketing consultant. He’ll tell us what’s hot and what’s not in business and how-to books.

So, get comfortable, or set the pace on that treadmill, or make sure the waiter has your order – We’re going to the opera!

GetPublished! Twitter Ads Were Effective

Results of our #BEA16 campaign on Twitter for Business

Results of our #BEA16 campaign on Twitter for Business

We’re opening the kimono to show our private parts! Many of our listeners want to know how to promote their books and projects via social media. So here are results of the sponsored Twitter feed we did during the two days of BEA this month to promote the radio show. Bottom line, you could say we bought 63 listeners for $200. However, those are likely to be influencers because the hashtag #bea16 targeted the feed closely. There were quite a few shares, and now @daboychik has several new Twitter followers a day.

The number of show listeners hit 400 today. It doesn’t climb but it maintains – at about 25 new listeners a day since we did this campaign. We’ve done Facebook boosts as well so we can’t say Twitter did it all.

However, the positive results of our Twitter campaign are undeniable. Facebook Boost and Google Adwords seem to be priced and tuned to ad agencies and corporate clients who have budgets we can’t hope to match. Goodreads ads are relatively economical, with the advantage that they can run continually for weeks or months. And a Goodreads Giveaway can very effective in building readership. What’s more, it’s just as effective to give away just 5 copies rather than 10 or 20.

Hey, let us know what works for you!

Coinciding with the second day of Book Expo America 2016 #BEA16
We’ve released the podcast of Episode 2 – LACMA Field Trip
Included in this post are pictures to support Gerald’s museum talk. As he explains:

In today’s special Episode 2 of GetPublished! I’ll take you on a field trip to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art – LACMA. It’s behind the scenes at an after-hours closed session of the American Art Council. I’m giving a talk on the scandal behind Julius Stewart’s painting The Baptism, which is the basis for my sixth novel, Bonfire of the Vanderbilts.

You’ll find pictures mentioned here on our blog Gerald’s Page at getpublished dot guru (in this blog post). They’re also in the book. I gave the presentation standing in front of the painting.

Now, why am I taking you here? One of our mantras on GetPublished! Radio is that no one is stopping you. I don’t have a degree in art history – I’m just an enthusiastic researcher. But if I had waited for scholars in this field to bless my results or for a mainstream publisher to vet the project – it probably would never have happened. But as it was, I self-published in paperback, ebook, and audiobook.

As you listen, realize that even now the museum doesn’t necessarily agree with all my findings. But they were impressed enough to invite me to speak behind closed doors to this influential group.

Why audio books are important WITH bound books

An interesting phenomena of personal interest has to do with “exceptional” people.  These are students, children and adults that are bright, but may have a learning disability.  It is well-known to psychologists, neurologists and school counselors (in my experience) that immersion in a subject by using more than one known “sense” is key to memory, retention, comprehension and recall.

I have a daughter and several grandchildren that are in the category of “exceptional” and we have been using bound books and and its audio book companion, simultaneously, to increase those skills necessary for success in school and life.

Although audio books have been popular for long car trips or commuting–it should be noted that in some cases, it’s not either/or, it’s necessary. In my opinion, any book worth publishing should have an audio companion.
