Coinciding with the second day of Book Expo America 2016 #BEA16
We’ve released the podcast of Episode 2 – LACMA Field Trip
Included in this post are pictures to support Gerald’s museum talk. As he explains:

In today’s special Episode 2 of GetPublished! I’ll take you on a field trip to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art – LACMA. It’s behind the scenes at an after-hours closed session of the American Art Council. I’m giving a talk on the scandal behind Julius Stewart’s painting The Baptism, which is the basis for my sixth novel, Bonfire of the Vanderbilts.

You’ll find pictures mentioned here on our blog Gerald’s Page at getpublished dot guru (in this blog post). They’re also in the book. I gave the presentation standing in front of the painting.

Now, why am I taking you here? One of our mantras on GetPublished! Radio is that no one is stopping you. I don’t have a degree in art history – I’m just an enthusiastic researcher. But if I had waited for scholars in this field to bless my results or for a mainstream publisher to vet the project – it probably would never have happened. But as it was, I self-published in paperback, ebook, and audiobook.

As you listen, realize that even now the museum doesn’t necessarily agree with all my findings. But they were impressed enough to invite me to speak behind closed doors to this influential group.

Why audio books are important WITH bound books

An interesting phenomena of personal interest has to do with “exceptional” people.  These are students, children and adults that are bright, but may have a learning disability.  It is well-known to psychologists, neurologists and school counselors (in my experience) that immersion in a subject by using more than one known “sense” is key to memory, retention, comprehension and recall.

I have a daughter and several grandchildren that are in the category of “exceptional” and we have been using bound books and and its audio book companion, simultaneously, to increase those skills necessary for success in school and life.

Although audio books have been popular for long car trips or commuting–it should be noted that in some cases, it’s not either/or, it’s necessary. In my opinion, any book worth publishing should have an audio companion.

My Dad’s Memoir

In my opening remarks of the premiere GetPublished! Radio Show, I tell the story of how I helped my father achieve a lifelong goal of publishing his own book. It wasn’t actually a memoir, but more of a scholarly whitepaper. He was fascinated by Biblical archaeology, and in his business life he’d made many trips to the Middle East. And, ever since he was a young man, he’d been a Sunday School teacher. His book is a reinterpretation of the story of Jonah and the whale. He’d spent years researching it, and he had a manuscript he’d taken through multiple drafts. But then he had a devastating stroke. He survived for several years after that, but he was never able to carry his project through to completion.

Here’s the book, Searching for Jonah: Clues in Hebrew and Assyrian History. (Hint: It’s in our bookstore.)

Searching for Jonah

Searching for Jonah, a scholarly treatise by Don Jones. Printed in hardcover on demand by Ingram Lightning Source (LaPuerta Photo)

Remarkably to me, I found a surrealist painting for the cover done by the figurative realist and event painter Keith Tucker – who generously donated the rights.

And the stars aligned so that Dad was able to hold it in his hands on his last birthday. His caregivers told everyone they had a famous author in residence. He might not have understood how it finally came to be, but I’m sure he knew it was his.

On his birthday in 2012, Don Jones received the first copy of his book (LaPuerta Photo)

So even if you don’t think of yourself as a writer, you may find opportunities through self-publishing technologies to honor a family member who left a memoir, a diary (be careful!), a thesis, or some poems.

Why Self Publish?

Here I am on a panel at the Publishers Association of Los Angeles meeting – explaining why I chose to use my own small press imprint to publish my most recent novel Bonfire of the Vanderbilts.
