You'll have to pry my computer from my cold, dead hands

[image error]Ugh. My computer has decided to malfunction, with the appearance of a wide black strip down the right side of the screen. I have a Genius Bar appointment one hour from now, and you just know they're going to have to send my computer somewhere for repair. This thing is like an appendage; I may have to start wearing a sling. I probably won't be able to blog, either, which sucks since I have a craazy celebrity interview coming up on Thursday. (I could have given you the fun back story....

Jo Bo's Wedding!

[image error][image error][image error][image error]Joanna and Josh tied the knot last night, at Norwood, an arts club on 14th St. and typical of Joanna, it was breathtaking, unique, and full of love and laughter. Look at my beautiful friend: She bought her wedding dress at a Paris flea market, wore roses in her hair and carried a stunning assortment of fall flowers. The ceremony took place in the garden, with her friends and family crowded around; after they exchanged rings, they stood together, wrapped in Josh's talit (a Jewish shawl.) Josh ...

Guess what was supposed to be due tomorrow?

[image error]No, not my baby, silly–at this point I'm going to have to use donor eggs–it's my big revise for Modern Bride! I was working on a reported piece about reality show weddings: I interviewed a slew of fascinating people, like Jill Nicolini from Married by America, and Mike Fleiss, creator of The Bachelor, and Deanna Pappis and Trista Sutter, former Bachelorettes, and a slew of Bridezillas, all of whom were freakin' nutz. (Best quote of the whole piece came from Drew Lesser, the executive...

The Wordstock lowdown

[image error]I'm sitting at the Portland airport, waiting for my flight, and my head is still spinning from the wonderful day I had today. This morning I taught a class on "The Business of Freelance Writing." Then I read from my book, along with Josh Neufeld, author of A.D.: After the Deluge. The audience asked tons of questions on craft, which thankfully Josh was able to answer; I stuck to the crazy dysfunctional family Qs. Then I was whisked away to a signing, where I was T.T. (totally terrified) that n...

I'm sitting on a panel with Jeannette Walls tomorrow

[image error]I mean, how cool is that? Of all the writers that are coming to Wordstock–aside from people I already know, like superstar writer Blake Nelson–Jeannette Walls is the one person I would most like to meet. In fact, just today I was looking over the names of people who are attending Wordstock (and will likely be at tonight's cocktail party), and was thinking, hmm, how do I introduce myself to Jeannette Walls without looking like the sycophantic superfan that I am? I'll tell you how–I'll sit on a...

Celebrating The Impostor's Daughter in Portland

Last night, the lovely Laura Krum and her husband Jeff hosted a huge party for me at their home in southwest Portland. Laura is my Wordstock "minder," meaning she is the person making sure I get to my events on time and helping me out with anything Wordstock-related. Normally, these people are assigned to you, but Carole Radziwill (who was at the party) was paired with her a few years ago and told me to request her. Well, Laura pulled out all the stops: Hiring a talented local caterer...

As if I haven't been traveling enough…

I'm now in Portland, OR. Man, it is hard to blog every day when you're traveling. I meant to write a quick note about my friend Randy Kaplan's show at The Living Room on Monday, but got so busy packing and getting ready for Wordstock I never got around to it. Randy's a great singer-songwriter who has decamped to LA, so I always try to catch him when he comes through New York. I arrived in Portland, OR, early this afternoon, and now I'm running around...

Gearing up for Wordstock

[image error]Two quick days here in New York, then Wednesday I'll be flying to Portland, OR, for the Wordstock for Writers festival. I was just there a few months ago, reading at Powells and seeing friends I made there a few summers ago. I can't wait to go back; I just love Portland. My schedule is going to be packed: Wednesday night my "minder," Laura, is throwing a party for me at her house; Thursday I'll catch up with friends; Friday night there's a cocktail party for participating authors; Saturday...

Popcorn dipped in mustard!

Yes, I was a sorority girl

[image error]I'm back in New York after a blissful weekend in Madison, visiting ALL the places I loved the best in college. Kicked off the day with breakfast at The Sunprint Cafe, a place I used to consider "fancy" in college. Then Dana (my old roommate) and I headed to the student union, to watch the Badgers play Minnesota and eat popcorn dipped into mustard. Tasted. Exactly. The. Same. We walked...
