Saturday Night Live, in person, last night!

[image error]For years–years–I've been wanting to see SNL live, and last night, thanks to my friend Julie, Dana Carvey's longtime assistant, I got to go! Needless to say, it did not disappoint (and I pretty much owe Julie my firstborn child.) Before the show, Julie and I had dinner with Dana's wife and sister–yes, the funny gene runs in the family; his sister, Lori is hilarious (that's her in the foreground, below.) Then we met up with his two sons and walked over to 30 Rock. The energy in the studio was electric; the house band was playing and people were swaying in their seats and clapping along. Jason Sudekis came out to warm up the crowd. He told us to shut off our phones, and pay attention to the applause signs; then he pointed to one section and said, "That goes for the people in the shitty seats, too." They were laughing and fist-pumping and he said, "I'm not kidding–you'll see. Actually, you won't." Then Keenan Thompson came out in a suit and sparkly star-shaped sunglasses and performed "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" by the Elton John.

[image error]Ten minutes before the show aired, crew members came out and laid down a shag carpet, seventies-style couch and three huge pieces of wood that comprised the wood-paneled walls in the background of the "cold opener," or skit that introduces the show. When it became clear they were assembling a Wayne's World sketch, the crowd went wild! At 11:29, the lights dimmed and a production assistant started counting down: "50 seconds to air. 40 seconds. 30 seconds." The room grew quiet, then the lights went all the way up and Dana and Mike Meyers were sitting there in full Wayne's World regalia. From that moment on, I did not stop laughing, to the point that my face hurt.

Some interesting tidbits: When they finished the cold opener Dana had exactly one minute to change into his street clothes for the monologue. Literally one second after they said, "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" a production coordinator ran onto the set, grabbed Dana by the wrist and he bounded off the stage and ran behind the sets. He was back a minute later, doing his opening monologue. Right before he introduced Linkin Park for the first time, when they were still at commercial and counting down the seconds to air, he was making all kinds of funny jokes. Someone would say, "10 seconds to air," and he would say, "Do I have time for a bathroom break?" Then, "Five seconds to air." Dana: "Can I get a mocchacino?" The sketch about the Celebrity Teen Crisis Center took place simultaneously on two stages: one with Dana and other cast members doing celebrity impressions, the other in front of a green screen on the other side of the room. The very last sketch, about a New Wave band annoying a group of Packers fans, took place on a stage that was turned in such a way that no one in the room could see it (they had to do that to prepare the stage for the finale), so we watched it on televisions posted around the room.

[image error][image error]The show seemed to go by in the blink of an eye. Afterwards, I got to go backstage with Julie and hang out in the hallway outside the dressing rooms. I saw (and squeezed past, and said hello to) Jon Lovitz, Mike Meyers, Keenan Thompson, Fred Armisen, the members of Linkin Park, and yes, the Biebs. Then we hung out in Dana's dressing room with his incredibly nice family. Dana had brought his two teenaged boys onstage at the end of the show and they were buzzy with excitement. I have to say, at 18 I was an insecure wreck; desperate to leave home and hyper-aware of my perceived shortcomings. These kids, by contrast, were calm, mature, and gentlemanly; clearly, they worship their dad and adore their mom and I was so impressed by them both.

[image error]Then we headed to the after-party at Dos Caminos. Every week, the show takes over a restaurant in NYC; everyone eats dinner, then mills around the room. We were seated at Dana's table, one table away from Loren Michaels and Mike Meyers. The rest of the cast (including Justin Bieber) were seated nearby, but we didn't have to leave our seats to see them, because people were coming up to Dana all night to congratulate him. Julie and I left at around 4:00 AM (at which time I got to meet Andy Samberg and Fred Armisen.) When we left, the rest of the cast was still there. I've scored some pretty amazing invitations in my day thanks to my job, but this might be one of the best nights I've ever had. It's one thing to go to a party packed with celebs, and it's another thing to go to a party packed with ultra-talented people whose work you really admire. Loved it!

A night of stars, cleavage and Golden Globes parties

[image error]On Sunday night I attended the mother of all Golden Globes after-parties, hosted by InStyle magazine, and it was a real Cinderella experience. Plane ticket: Free. (I used miles.) Dress: Michael Kors, ridiculously expensive, belongs to my sister, Karyn. Boobs: Victoria's Secret "Miraculous" bra. Hotel: Four Seasons, crashed in my friend Paul's room.

[image error]I spent the day writing (of course), having lunch by the pool next to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and getting my nails done. When Paul and I headed upstairs to get ready, we discovered someone had delivered bags and bags of shoes and clutches to our room: Jimmy Choos, Manolo Blahniks, Brian Atwoods in every conceivable style. For a moment, I thought that woman I'd given a dollar to on Sunset was actually a fairy godmother; then I looked at the slip of paper tucked into the bag. The goods belonged to Lea Michele of Glee! I ruefully had the hotel take it away and changed into my own synthetic–wait, VEGAN–shoes from Aldo. Just like Natalie Portman in this month's issue of InStyle. That story, by the way, was written by yours truly! I never expected them to throw me a huge bash at the Beverly Hilton in honor of my first InStyle cover, but apparently, it has been getting a lot of press.

[image error]I got ready in the room (had to settle for hot rollers since I left my curling iron at a friend's–as you can see, I had no idea how to use them), then at 9:00 headed over to the Beverly Hilton for the after-party. I'm not kidding, it was one of the most star-studded things I've ever seen. Natalie Portman, Tilda Swinton, Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Gabourey Sidibe, Mark Ruffalo, Brendan Fraser, Zac Efron and the cast of Glee were all there. I saw Rachel Zoe in a flowing black maternity dress, with stick-thin arms. I sat on a couch while Lea Michele danced on top of it next to me, completely unaware that if I had so chosen–let's say I was the type of person who might have ended up as part of the "Burglar Bunch"–I could have been wearing shoes meant for her. I was probably most excited to talk to Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family, who knows my friend Jack Cummings (Jesse's response to hearing Jack's name: "Shut. Up!")[image error]

A limo leaves the Four Seasons for the Globes

I danced for hours–literally hours–with Paul, Ariel, and Stu Blumberg, fresh off several wins for his film, The Kids Are All Right. Finally, my feet gave out–I might have done permanent damage; I'm having pain all the way up my left leg. So I sat for a while in the Godiva room, sampling chocolate truffles. We called it a night at the very end and I flew home the next day. Of course, a trip to the Golden Globes wouldn't have been complete without stepping off the plane and into the blinding glare of paparazzi flashbulbs: Paul Giamatti was on my flight. Thank you, Ariel Foxman, for an amazing night!
