CLOAK GAMES: TOMB HOWL progress update

Now 40k words into CLOAK GAMES: TOMB HOWL. I think the rough draft will land in the neighborhood of 70k or so.

Also, I’m really glad I decided to publish FROSTBORN: THE DRAGON KNIGHT last week. If I had decided to hold off until March, I would be attempting to publish it today, and Amazon Web Services is having a massive outage at the time of this writing.

That would have been frustrating! Clearly, there are advantages to writing quickly.

FROSTBORN: THE DRAGON KNIGHT now available!

Available from Amazon USAmazon UKAmazon GermanyAmazon CanadaAmazon AustraliaBarnes & NobleKoboiBooksGoogle Play, and Smashwords.

The realm of Andomhaim has been reunited, with a true High King ruling in Tarlion once more.

But it is far too late.

The host of the Frostborn marches to war, bringing terror and death in their wake, and a weakened Andomhaim is not strong enough to defeat them.

Only the sword of the Dragon Knight has the power to drive back the Frostborn, and it is calling to Ridmark Arban.

But the sword devours anyone bold enough to wield it…

CLOAK GAMES: TOMB HOWL update

Now that FROSTBORN: THE DRAGON KNIGHT is out, the next book to write is CLOAK GAMES: TOMB HOWL.

Right now I’m on chapter 7 of 14, so just about halfway through the rough draft.

a FROSTBORN quote

I like this bit from a Goodreads review of FROSTBORN OMNIBUS ONE. It’s always nice when a reader grasps what the writer was trying to do:

CLOAK GAMES: TOMB HOWL update

Working on Chapter 5 of CLOAK GAMES: TOMB HOWL today.

One of the fun things about writing that series is that in a tense situation, the filter on Nadia’s mouth just shuts off. And TOMB HOWL will have a LOT of tense situations!

Nadia Moran vs. CLOAK GAMES

A reader asks concerning CLOAK GAMES:

My only question (that I don’t think will be answered in further books) is why is Nadia shown holding what looks like a Katana on the cover off the first four books when she doesn’t even appear to own one, let alone carry/use it in the books?

Concerning the covers, the general rule of thumb is that the cover needs to successfully show what genre the book is in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. Nothing irritates people more than picking up a book that looks like it should be, say, a fantasy novel, but it turns out to be a different genre.

So, if you look at the covers for the CLOAK GAMES books, they definitely say “urban fantasy” and “woman does wizard stuff while fighting bad guys”, which is what they need to convey. So if on the cover she’s carrying a katana and doesn’t actually use one, I’m good with that.

Besides, all the Harry Dresden book covers show him wearing a fedora. Dresden never wears a fedora.

CLOAK GAMES & writer milestones

I was looking at the Kobo Epic Fantasy bestseller list, and I saw that CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER was right next to the Terry Brooks Starter Pack, which contained THE SWORD OF SHANNARA, MAGIC KINGDOM FOR SALE, and RUNNING WITH THE DEMON.

It was pretty cool to see that because I read all three of those books a long time ago, before the Internet, (I think I read RUNNING WITH THE DEMON in 1997, which was the first year I used the Internet), and long before I became a writer. MAGIC KINGDOM FOR SALE is still one of my favorite books, lo these many years later.

So that was one of those cool little writer milestones that you don’t expect. Thanks everyone!

FROSTBORN & THE GHOSTS questions

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post about the cover image of FROSTBORN: THE DRAGON KNIGHT, here are answers to some questions:

-The cover was done by Clarissa Yeo of Yocla Designs. She does good work!

-If all goes well, FROSTBORN: THE DRAGON KNIGHT will come out in March. (Bear in mind that “in March” includes up to 11:59 PM on March 31st, technically.)

-In March, I will finish writing CLOAK GAMES: TOMB HOWL. That should come out in April.

-In April, I’m going to start writing the final FROSTBORN book and GHOST IN THE RING. If all goes well, the last FROSTBORN book will come out in May, and GHOST IN THE RING will come out in June/July.

That’s the plan for the next couple of months, barring weather, health, Real Life, etc.

Thanks for reading! More books soon.

FROSTBORN: THE DRAGON KNIGHT cover image

Editing is now underway for FROSTBORN: THE DRAGON KNIGHT, so that means it’s time to share the cover image.

If all goes well the book will be out towards the end of March.
