Was GHOST IN THE RING the first GHOSTS book?

A reader emailed me this week:

“Really liked Ghost in the Ring! But the backstory for Caina seemed very detailed. Are there other books in the series?”

Why yes! Yes there are!

The very first book in the Caina series is CHILD OF THE GHOSTS. It’s free on all ebook stores, and it’s also a good long read – 100,000 words or about 5000 Kindle locations. It’s a complete story on its own, not a cliffhanger, and a good introduction to Caina and the world of the Empire of Nighmar.

After that, there are many more books. A complete list of THE GHOSTS and GHOST EXILE novels are below, in the proper reading order. The short stories are included in the list, but note that those are more like “bonus adventures” – you don’t need to read them to keep up with the main plot:

progress updates

I’m on chapter 10 of 24 of SEVENFOLD SWORD: CHAMPION. Hope to get that rough draft finished before the end of June!

I’m also on chapter 4 of 14 of CLOAK GAMES: HAMMER BREAK. Once SEVENFOLD SWORD: CHAMPION is finished, I hope to finish up HAMMER BREAK and have it out in August or possibly September.

SEVENFOLD SWORD: CHAMPION excerpt

8 chapters of SEVENFOLD SWORD: CHAMPION down, 16 to go!

Let’s have a short, spoiler-free excerpt from the book!

In today’s excerpt, Calliande engages in diplomatic tact:

Calliande opened her mouth to argue, and then a better idea came to her. “Like you said, I am a madwoman, and I have lost my memory. So you are going to refresh my memory.”

That seemed to resonate with the muridach leader. “Perhaps you ate some bad carrion and the parasites entered into your brain. That happened to three of my brothers and two of my sisters. And my uncle. He thought he was the Lord of Carrion reborn, and believed he could fly. Alas, he could not.”

“A tragedy,” said Calliande.

“Yes. My brothers and sisters mourned for him as we ate his corpse at his funeral feast. It was a most solemn occasion, and he digested well.”

Calliande kept the revulsion from her face. The dietary practices of the muridachs were not something she wanted to contemplate.

GHOST IN THE THRONE

I was looking over the previous GHOSTS books to help set up my outline for GHOST IN THE GLASS (coming later this year). An author’s assessment of his own work is always suspect, of course, but I think GHOST IN THE THRONE is one of my favorite of the GHOSTS series.

(SPOILERS for the book follow.)

I really liked how Caina and Cassander Nilas basically spent the book chasing each other in the dark. I also liked how Callatas’s mishandling of Cassander almost blew up (in the most literal sense) in his face, and severely hampered his efforts later on, and I liked how Cassander almost usurped control of the GHOST EXILE series to become the main villain. I liked the conversation where Claudia tells Caina to stop complaining and go be the Balarigar.

And I did like the scenes with the circus, but I admit I mostly wrote that part because it amused me.

SEVENFOLD SWORD & FROSTBORN

Let’s have a little (and spoiler-free) preview of SEVENFOLD SWORD: CHAMPION.

There is a writing tool called “arc words”, where a particular phrase or word gets repeated in a book as a means of establishing a theme or a motif. A famous example is “precious” from THE LORD OF THE RINGS, where that word describes the growing corruption the Ring of Power has upon its bearer.

If you’ve read my books, you know I’m very fond of arc words. Probably the two biggest examples are “the star is the key to the crystal” and “the silver fire is your only salvation” from the GHOST EXILE series.

FROSTBORN had quite a few arc words:

-The Frostborn are returning.

-Find Dragonfall and your staff.

-One hundred thousand years of war. (I admit this one was my favorite.)

-Burn with me.

-Freedom from time and matter and law.

So here are some of the planned arc words for SEVENFOLD SWORD:

-The Guardian(s).

The Nine Cities.

-Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Life, Death, and Shadow.

-The Dark Lady.

-Thunderbolt.

-Swordborn.

-Find me again.

-The New God is coming.

SEVENFOLD SWORD: CHAMPION now underway

I am now writing the first book of the FROSTBORN sequel series, SEVENFOLD SWORD: CHAMPION.

I am 12,000 words into it, which puts me on Chapter 3 of 24. I really, really want to finish the rough draft in June, but we’ll see if I can put it off!

Here’s the first sentence of the book:

The day the quest of the Seven Swords began, the day in the Year of Our Lord 1488 when the cloaked stranger came to the High King’s court, Ridmark Arban showed his youngest son how to hold a sword.
