How to Find Your Unique Writing Voice: Guest Post from Claire Jefferson
A writing voice is what defines you as a writer. It’s supposed to be original, unlike anyone else’s. Yet, finding it can prove difficult, especially if you are just starting to write. You cannot help but be influenced by authors whose pieces you’ve read, and it’s partially due to that that you are unable to find your unique writing voice. Having tried to develop your own style numerous times, you might even be on the verge of giving up. However, now’s not time for that, as below you will find tips on how to finally uncover the writer in you!
Tips to Help You Find Your Unique Writing VoiceWriting has, these days, become much easier as writing apps and tools to keep you focused are many. They allow you to become a better author by aiding organization and time management. Nevertheless, to be able to use these apps effectively, you must first develop an original writing voice. Without further ado, let’s see how to do so!
#1 Write, write, writePractice makes perfect, isn’t that right? After all, you cannot expect to improve if you do not put work into it. Well, it’s the same with writing, which is why, to be able to find your own voice, you must write as much as possible. Research suggests that becoming an expert at something takes about 10,000 hours of practice. So, what are you waiting for? The clock is ticking!
#2 Read as Much as You CanWhile reading other writers’ work can be your demise if you copy too much of somebody else’s style, it can also be your salvation. Instead of sticking to solely one author or a couple of them, read the works of many authors. As many of them as you can! The more you read, the better you will understand how different people see the world and how they form their characters. Seeing things from another perspective can be a great resource. It can open your eyes and allow you to approach writing in another way. A way that, while slightly influenced by others, is still utterly and truly yours.
#3 Be Open to CriticismThe goal of a writer is to have their work read. And you cannot expect to build an audience and an original voice if you shield your pieces from those interested in reading them. Instead of hiding your drafts, have somebody read them and give you an honest opinion. Nobody’s been born a persuasive writer, and neither have you. You can, however, become that. And the first step towards it is to accept the criticism that you get. In fact, not only accept it but rather learn from it.
#4 Think About the Reason Why You Want to WriteWhat is the main reason behind your writing? Is it to inspire people, motivate them to do better, or simply tell a story? It may even be the combination of all of these. Knowing precisely why you write will help you develop your style. Or at least point you in the right direction.
#5 Be HonestReaders value honesty above all. That’s why, at the end of the day, the best tip on how to find your unique writing voice that we can give is to be honest. Write from the bottom of your heart and discuss only the topics that you are absolutely comfortable discussing. Whether you are writing a blog post, a magazine article, a book, or something else entirely doesn’t matter. As long as you are true to yourself and your beliefs, your own voice will shine through eventually.

Welcome, Guest Bloggers
Since I have moved into the retirement home, I have been involved in a variety of activities and have not posted on my blog as much as I would like. Among many other projects, I’m planning a class on writing memoirs. Residents have so many amazing stories of their experiences in their lives, and many of those lives have lasted ninety or more years. I believe everyone should tell their life story for their families and possibly for a wider audience. With this class, every resident can write about their lives, and we will publish their work in a book. Although the book will be for sale, it will primarily be for their relatives to keep the family legacy.

I am updating and expanding my free ebook, Preserving Memories: How to Write a Family History, and creating a textbook for the class. Once the book is in print, it will be available for sale on Amazon. I will add exercises at the end of each chapter that I will assign as homework in the class and that readers can to use to jumpstart their own memoir or family history writing.
With all the projects I have going on, I probably won’t have time to post on my blog very much. For the next few weeks, I will be posting a series of guest blogs on subjects related to my blog. Many talented writers have knowledge and wisdom to share, and I have published a number of excellent guest posts in the past. The upcoming posts will be just as great!

Guest Post: How to Turn Your Hobby into a Business
We have all heard that saying about a thousand times: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” However, that may not seem so easy to do at first glance. Moreover, the job market isn’t always on your side, and the jobs you enjoy aren’t so readily available. Luckily, there’s another way! If you have something you’re passionate about, you can go the non-traditional route and turn your hobby into a business. This is something that takes time, dedication, and much more.
It Starts with DesireBefore you can turn your hobby into a business, you have to be sure this is something you want to do. First of all, you should be passionate about your hobby. It shouldn’t just be something you do to pass the time that you’re not 100% sure you’d be able to do as a job. So, think it through.
Ask yourself if you genuinely want to be a writer? Can you imagine yourself doing that full-time? Is it sustainable? Could you do it for more than a few years? For example, as a freelance writer, there are many challenges you will face every day, and in order to get through some of them, you have to truly love what you do.
Think About Your GoalWhat do you hope to get out of your business? Some people respond with monthly cash flow, while others respond with an income-generating asset. On the other hand, most business owners want to sell their company when they retire. Whatever your answer is, having your goals written down might help you keep on track and recall why you opted to start your own business in the first place.
Do Your ResearchMany entrepreneurs fall prey to the allure of a product or business concept. You can easily get blinded by your passion for your hobby and not realize that there’s not an audience for the service or products you’d offer. Before you move on to the next stage, you have to do some market research to ensure that your business concept is also intriguing to other people.
Research is a great way to discover more about your potential customer. It’s also a great way to answer some of the questions from your previous stages. By looking at the competition and the market, you can determine if this is something you’ll be able to do for a long time. This will help you pinpoint some of the most common challenges those in your line of work face. For example, many freelance writers struggle with coming up with new topic ideas and start repeating the same things until they get bored of it.
Test the ConceptStarting your business as a side hustle can initially help you test it out. It’s an ideal way to figure out if you can achieve the goal you set and determine if you’re good at what you’re passionate about. The results should speak for themselves.
However, balancing your day job and your new business might be challenging once you start your side hustle. When you’re so preoccupied with being good at multiple things and meeting so many different deadlines, it’s common to experience burnout. As a writer, you’ll probably experience blogger burnout unless you figure out ways to avoid it ahead of time.
Start Your BusinessWhen the profits from your side-hustle begin to approach your existing income, it might be time to leave your day job and turn your hobby into a business. You’ll have to write a business plan, build your brand, create a web presence, and develop a marketing strategy. When it comes to digital marketing, some common pitfalls—common marketing mistakes small businesses make—are failing to invest in SEO and ignoring their social media presence. If you want your brand to grow and expand nowadays, consider these two things.
Final ThoughtsIt’s not easy to turn your hobby into a business. If you decide to follow your passion, it will take a lot of work. You will most likely have doubts if you made the right choice. But it will also pay off in the end!

Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen!
As hard as it is to believe, my blog is sixteen years old. I wrote my first brief Hello post on June 11, 2006.
When I first started, blogs were becoming hugely popular, and many people were starting new blogs. At the time, WordPress was basically a blogging platform with the ability to add pages, and I used it to add a blog to my existing website. The Wayback Machine has a history of my site back to 2001, but I started it a couple of years before that.
Of course, we’ve all come a long way since then. A large percentage of websites today are powered totally by WordPress, and anyone can create a site without writing a line of code. Blogs are seamlessly integrated into sites rather than being standalone entities.
As blogging grew in popularity, I became colleagues with many bloggers who are still treasured friends today. We visited each other’s blogs, commented on posts, participated in group writing projects, and encouraged and supported one another. Although the social aspects of the early days of blogging have largely been taken over by social media today, long-time bloggers have archives filled with memories of those days.
In a human life, turning sixteen means a young person is nearing the age of adulthood. In the world of the Internet, a sixteen-year-old blog is old—just like I am. I don’t blog as often, but I hope to continue blogging for many more years.

The Country Girl and the City Slicker
I was the oldest child in my family, and my father was not ready for any of babies to grow up and marry. He was especially concerned about his firstborn, a naive country girl. I was marrying a man thirteen and a half years my senior, a man who had been divorced, and—worst of all—a city slicker!
Maybe he wanted to keep the wedding as low-profile as possible. Daddy asked me to get married in my parents’ home, in a large, enclosed back porch that extended the entire length of the big old farmhouse. Wanting to keep my daddy as happy as possible about my marriage, I readily agreed. It was a simple wedding, officiated by the pastor of our church during my high school years and with music provided by my best friend from college on keyboard and a couple of other friends singing a duet. My sisters closest to me in age were my maid of honor and bridesmaid, and my teenage brother was usher. My youngest siblings were ring bearer and flower girl. My wedding dress was a white lacey sheath handmade by my closest friend’s mother. The reception was cake and punch served from the dining table. I can’t remember who made the cake, but I’m sure it was my mother or grandmother.
I didn’t miss the fancy and expensive trappings of many lavish weddings. I was thrilled to say our vows before God and our loved ones, and I was eager to embark on our new lives as husband and wife. For our honeymoon, Jack drove us to Monterrey, Mexico, in his Corvette convertible, and we spent several days in a nice, but not fancy, hotel. We were as happy as any couple could have been in the most luxurious accommodations.
Daddy apparently decided to test the city slicker. Shortly after we married, Daddy asked Jack to come down to the farm and help vaccinate cattle. He probably expected Jack to refuse or to fail, but Jack surprised him. I don’t know how effective he was, but he won Daddy over by his willingness to do whatever was asked of him. More than that, though, was his reaction to the whole situation. He was amazed at the process and shared his excitement with anyone who would listen.
All of the women and girls had stayed in the house and prepared a big meal for the men doing the hot, hard work. While we ate, Jack described to me every step of the operation, which, of course, I had seen many times. He was impressed that someone would turn the cow into the chute and slap it on the rear at the same time someone else stuck the animal with the vaccination needle. He described how the slap distracted the cow from the needle, so she didn’t react to it at all. He expressed his admiration for the smart planning and efficient execution of the entire operation.
We could all see Daddy’s cute grin as he listened to Jack’s enthusiasm. Proving my theory that the purpose of asking Jack to work wasn’t the need for help but a desire to find out what the city slicker was willing and able to do, Daddy never again asked Jack for help on the farm. However, he did ask for help and advice in many other ways. They quickly came to love, trust, and respect each other tremendously. My mother and Jack had the same devoted relationship, but their relationship started out that way.
When we went through premarital counseling, the priest emphasized that I would probably have to care for Jack in his old age and would likely be widowed young. As it happened, I had a stroke at age forty-five, and Jack had to care for me during my recovery. I did have to care for him at the end of his life when he suffered from Alzheimer’s, but I was honored to be able to do so. We had some wonderful times in those final years when he was totally dependent on me. He trusted me implicitly and never resented my care. Sometimes we would sit quietly side by side on the front porch, and Jack would turn to me and say, “We have a really good life, don’t we?”
Yes, we did. We had a really good life for forty-five years before Jack went to be with the Lord. He’s been gone almost ten years, and I still miss him every day. But even though I miss him now, I’m so blessed we were together as long as we were.
Jack used to say that he didn’t regret anything that happened in his life, because if our earlier lives hadn’t happened just as they did, we would not have met. We always agreed that divine intervention brought us together. After Jack developed Alzheimer’s and couldn’t always find the right word, he started saying it was divine interference! But he never questioned that God brought us to each other.

Memorial Day 2022
When I was a child, my father, a veteran of World War II, was active in the local American Legion chapter, and my mother volunteered in the Auxiliary. I remember her selling fabric poppies every year for Memorial Day for people to wear to remember and honor those lost in serving their country and to raise money for programs for veterans. We often heard the poem “In Flanders Fields” read or recited as well.
The poem was written by a Canadian military surgeon, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, during World War I. The landscape of Western Europe was devastated by the battles of the war, and McCrae saw firsthand the devastation the war wreaked on soldiers. Yet he was struck with seeing red flowers, the poppy—commonly considered a weed—pushing up through the destroyed ground and covering the graves of those who had died in battle. History.com describes how the poppy eventually became a common symbol of remembrance in many countries of the world.
Let us remember this weekend those who have died in service to our country to preserve our freedoms. Today is specifically to remember those who gave their lives; Veterans Day is the day to honor those who served but returned home.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:
John McCrae
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Guest Post: What to Include in a Thank-You Note to a Team
If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.
Henry Ford
This is one of my favorite quotes on teamwork. Because it’s true that teamwork has the extraordinary ability to boost productivity, job satisfaction, and even individual performance.
Recognizing the efforts of your team members is certainly a good gesture. One of the most effective strategies to enhance your business relationships and expand your network is to communicate with those that assist you. Everyone wants to be praised, and most people perform at their best when they are satisfied with their work.
Key of success!
You will certainly achieve your goal if you work alone for ten years. However, if you work together as a team, you can achieve your goal in five years.
A team can be a group of coworkers working with one boss or a team of freelancers collaborating on a project, such as an editor, book designer, cover designer, and virtual assistant collaborating to help an author self-publish a book. This describes what a team is and how it works.
So, let’s go over what to include in thank you notes for the team.Make the plan and each person’s involvement as specific as possible. Mention what made the person stand out, especially if there are no direct reports.
TIP: encourage them to keep working hard and express their confidence in their abilities to succeed in the future. Demonstrate your admiration for their skills and your belief in their abilities.
Please mention anyone on the project who surprised you in your note to the supervisor and your appreciation for the supervisor’s team management.
Why should managers send thank-you notes to their team? After completing a project, reaching a milestone or goal, or achieving a significant achievement, you might write thank-you messages to your team as a leader. These letters can be significant for your team members, demonstrating that the administration recognizes their efforts and values them as company members, whether sending them out as an email or creating individual cards. Small gestures, like as sending a thank-you note after a job well done, can boost productivity and employee engagement.
When writing a thank you note, keep these 5 points in mind.Let’s get started…
1. Appreciative of leading this team.
Here’s an example of how you could express your gratitude for your team’s efforts:
“Team, you’re amazing! The increase in productivity in the final quarter was nothing short of amazing! We were able to achieve our goals thanks to this rise. I can’t thank you enough for your hard work and dedication to the most crucial purpose. We’ve taken this company to new peaks, and I’m grateful to be leading such a motivated team!”
2. Regardless of the circumstances.
This is an example of how to express gratitude to a group for working together during a difficult time:
“Being an organization’s manager is difficult, but with staff like yours by my side, it looks simple. This group has always inspired me and pushed me to greater levels so that this organization can achieve tremendous success. Thank you all for your constant support through thick and thin.”
3. A delightful surprise at their workplace.
Here’s an example of management not just thanking their team with an email, but also with a gift:
“You have put in a tremendous amount of time and work over the last few months. You not only inspire, but you also motivate your colleagues to work hard and fulfill goals. We are privileged to have you as a part of our team, and I’m looking forward to hearing about your accomplishments in the coming quarter! Here is a small gift to show our appreciation.”
4. You make it simple.
Here’s an example of how to express gratitude to your staff for assisting you in reaching a company milestone:
“Thank you all so much for your incredible devotion and effort! Working with a motivated and self-sufficient team is a dream come true. The organization would not have reached this milestone without your help. Despite the countless deadlines, every one of you made everything seem simple. It’s all because of you!”
5. Thank you for your dedication.
Here’s how you may show your appreciation for your team’s dedication:
“Thank you for focusing solely on the task at hand, everyone! Without your entire work and willingness, we would not have been able to fulfill our objectives! The management would like to express its gratitude to each and every one of you for your efforts. You’re all rock stars! P.S. Don’t bring your lunch tomorrow! It’s all on us now.”
6. Enjoy what you do.
When it comes to freelancing, some people do it for the money and end up having no passion for what they do. This is definitely the best way to become frustrated if you ask me. The truth is that no one is content doing something they don’t enjoy. Several things can go wrong if you have a shaky commitment to anything.
You must discover and develop for the freelancing life in order to avoid being frustrated. Most crucial, make sure you’re doing something you genuinely enjoy. If you’re a good designer, don’t go into content marketing. If you’d rather be an SEO professional than a web developer, choose what you like. Make your job what you enjoy, not endure.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me about our current social media marketing effort yesterday. I appreciate your suggestions for making the implementation plan more efficient. I am excited to include your thoughts in our schedule.
It is beneficial to have someone who has worked with similar market parameters assist with this project. As a team member, I value your guidance and numerous helpful contributions.

Hello, team!
I’m grateful to have a team like yours. When I started freelancing, there was no one to help me, but as time passed, things changed. I used to think, that I could accomplish everything on my own, but then I realized I couldn’t do everything at once. You guys show your faith in me—my entire team, including the editor, designer, and social media coordinator. Because of you, we’ve met our goal, as each of you has a distinct level of creativity. Thank you for your commitment and hard work, and best wishes for the future.
Thanks,
Rory

Mental Health Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental illness sometimes is stigmatized in a way that physical illness is not. Consequently, people may hide their problems and not seek help because they are embarrassed. They may feel isolated and alone and believe no one could understand. Loved ones may believe that the individual suffering from a mental illness is simply being difficult and may be offended by behavior that is caused by the illness. Raising awareness is critical to make it easier to recognize mental illness and to get those who are ill into treatment.
Even though individuals with mental illness often feel alone, one in five people experiences some type of mental illness. One in twenty people experiences serious mental illness. Here are some facts about mental illness from the National Alliance on Mental Illness:

As prevalent as mental illness is, it’s hard to comprehend how so many of those suffering feel alone and try to hide their condition. We should be as aware of mental illness as we are of physical illnesses like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. If we have a mental illness, we should feel comfortable talking with our loved ones about our medical condition, and if we have a loved one with a mental illness, we should be just as willing to discuss their disease as we are to discuss Grandma’s heart attack or Dad’s cancer.

National Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer, Thursday, May 5, 2022, is a day set aside to pray for our nation. The National Prayer was written especially for this year’s Day of Prayer by Kathy Branzell, President, The National Day of Prayer Task Force.
The National Prayer 2022Lord, we exalt You.
We are filled with awe and wonder as our praise joins the heavenly hosts saying, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.”
You alone are the Creator; the earth is Yours and all it contains is for Your glory. You created and established all of us as Your image bearers.
May our lips and lives continually praise You, reflecting and magnifying You in all our words and ways.
You are the author of our days, You have established Your plans and purpose for us. We respond to your glory and authority in obedience to Your Word and will.
You have established prayer that we, Your children, Can communicate with our Heavenly Father directing, strengthening, and discipling us in Your everlasting love.
We join heaven’s activities as we lift up our prayers And pour out our praise, repentance, thanks, intercession and supplication.
Lord, You have established America through the hearts of our founding fathers and the documents they penned declaring our dependence on Your sovereignty and supremacy.
We overflow with gratitude having been firmly rooted and built up in our faith in You.
Let our reputation be of our faith in Christ alone, our love for all people, and fruitful lives bearing the attitude, affections, and actions of Your Spirit, Who dwells and works within us and through us.
We pray for America: the Church, Family, Education, Military, Workplace, Government, Arts, Entertainment and Media.
United in Your love, we exalt the Lord who has established us.
In Jesus Name we always pray, Amen!
A Prayer for Our CountryThe post National Day of Prayer first appeared on Lillie Ammann, Writer and Editor.Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage; We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favour and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honourable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogancy, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Maundy Thursday aka Holy Thursday
This year the reading plan I’m using for my Lenten devotions focuses on the final week of Jesus’ earthly life. One passage might be the story of Jesus washing His disciple’s feet from Matthew, then for the next few days, the readings will be about the same event or teaching. Depending on the incident or words being conveyed, we might read the same passage as written in other Gospels. The plan has a reading for each of the forty days of Lent. I find it fascinating to read two, three, or four passages from God’s Word all about the same event. Reading about the suffering Jesus endured for our sake always impacts me, but the impact is even stronger when I read each Gospel account of the event over a period of a few days.
In addition to all the emotions these passages bring forth, another thing that really caught my attention is how much happened on the day before the Crucifixion. In this plan, we have been reading about this day—Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday—for a couple of weeks. Jesus preached to the crowds that day and spent a long time that evening in the Passover dinner with His disciples. He seemed to be preparing them for an exam. He reminded them of His teachings and told them He would send the Holy Spirit to guide them into truth and bring to mind the things Jesus had told them.
I have written devotionals or posts for Maundy Thursday for several years. Search for Maundy Thursday on my blog to find them.
ALMIGHTY Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, did institute the Sacrament of his Body and Blood; Mercifully grant that we may thankfully receive the same in remembrance of him, who in these holy mysteries giveth us a pledge of life eternal; the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen.
