Epiphany: The Visit of the Wise Men

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Matthew 2:1-12

There are many legends about the magi. Sometimes they are described as kings, sometimes as wise men, sometimes as magi (which means wise and knowledgeable men who study the stars). Tradition says there were three, but Scripture doesn’t tell us how many there were. Names have been assigned to them by legend, but we have no idea what their real names were. Some theorize that they each came from a different country and couldn’t even speak to each other. There are also opinions on the star the wise men followed. Astronomers and others research the history of comets and other phenomena to try to discern if the star in the east coincides with any known cosmic event. And there are many more theories, legends, and myths.

None of this really matters. It may be fun to imagine who the wise men were, where they came from, the significance of the gifts they brought, their names, their relationships to each other. But the Bible doesn’t tell us any of that because we don’t need to know it. The only important details of the story are that men who were not Jews traveled a very long way to worship Jesus.

The Epiphany commemorates the arrival of those magi, who followed the star to worship baby Jesus. This feast day is also known as The Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, because the magi, who were not Jews, were the first Gentiles to worship Christ, demonstrating that the promises of God are for all mankind. Jews typically expected the Messiah to come to rescue them from oppression. They didn’t expect that the rescue would not be from an enemy army or oppressive leaders, but the rescue from sin and death—and the promise of eternal life. And the promise wasn’t just to Jewish people or the Jewish nation but to the entire world.

Anyone anywhere can have eternal life if they choose to follow Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. God didn’t tell us where the magi came from; they represent other nations and peoples—you and me. Even if we weren’t born a Jew, we have the same promises from the same Lord as the Jews do.

Epiphany isn’t widely celebrated in churches today. I think it deserves recognition. We should celebrate that these three (or more or less) magi (or kings or wise men) followed a star to worship baby Jesus. As a result, we see that we Gentiles can have the same salvation as the Jews can. Hallelujah!

Heavenly Father, thank You that You offer salvation to all people of every nation, language, tribe, people group. All have the same requirement: repent of our sins and accept Your Son Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We can be rich, poor, or in-between; we can be any nationality or skin color; we can be educated or illiterate. When we say “yes” to Jesus, we become Your sons and daughters. We give You praise and honor and glory, for You are holy, sovereign, omnipotent, almighty—yet You love each one of us. We can never be worthy, Lord, but please help us to walk in Your way. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

New Year’s Goal

The dining room in the retirement home where I live was decorated for our New Year’s Eve party. Candles and various decorations served as festive centerpieces on the tables. One such decoration was a sign that read: Good luck with those resolutions!

Resolutions don’t usually last long, so I typically avoid making resolutions. It’s more effective to set goals than to make resolutions. This year, I have set one goal for myself. I intend to complete and publish a novel before the year is over. Although I have published several novels along with nonfiction books, I have not written fiction in several years. I’ve thought about this story for decades, but I have never been able to get it written. This is the year I’m going to do it!

I actually started writing a couple of months ago, and I have written about 15,000 words. Chances are, however, that many of these words won’t make it into the final version. As I wrote in some of the earliest posts on this blog, the first draft is supposed to be “pure green dreck,” but with rewrites and editing, the initial dreck can be turned into prose worth reading.

Happy New Year and good luck with your goals.

Christmas Blessings

May you be blessed with love, joy, and peace on this holy day and always.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Luke 2:1-7

GOD, who makest us glad with the yearly remembrance of the birth of thine only Son Jesus Christ; Grant that as we joyfully receive him for our Redeemer, so we may with sure confidence behold him when he shall come to be our Judge, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen. ~ 1928 Book of Common Prayer, Collect for Christmas Day

Tips for Editing Your Blog Posts: Guest Post from Melissa Hendricks

Have you ever published something and then, the next day, given it a quick read, only to spot a blatant error? Most people who read your content online aren’t going to care if you misspell some words, but they will appreciate that you made an effort. It only takes one slip-up for your reader to decide that you haven’t put in the effort necessary to merit their time and attention. To help you avoid this, we’ve consulted an experienced editing expert, and here’s all you need to know about editing your blog posts so that you can attract and retain readers.

Make editing your blog posts easier with these tips

Blogging requires constant learning and adjusting your content to meet your readers’ preferences. That’s why learning how to edit your work is a crucial skill if you want to become a successful blogger. Your high quality won’t be enough to attract readers if it comes with plenty of mistakes.

Woman sitting on a couch and taking notes in a notebook while looking at a laptop. If you take some time to research and learn, soon you’ll be editing your blog posts like a pro.

Therefore, your primary focus should be finding ways to edit your blog posts efficiently, especially when you first start blogging. Once you gather a crowd of readers on your blog, you can focus on other ways to improve it. For instance, you can research tips for reducing bounce rates, improving your SEO, and finding different ways to entice your visitors. But before you get to that, here are tips to help you edit your blog posts like a pro.

#1 Don’t rush to edit your post

If you’re in a blogging mood or in a rush to publish a post, you might complete writing and then jump right into editing. Occasionally doing this is fine. However, it’s best to let your post sit for a while before making any changes to it. If you can get away from your post for the night, that’s great. If not, a lunch break or even a coffee break would do.

After some time away from the computer, you may find that you have a clearer head and are better able to identify errors such as typos, grammatical faults, and other little but distracting issues. Because you won’t be as immersed in the text, you’ll be able to spot places where you may improve it by making additions, deletions, or rearranging paragraphs.

#2 Take a closer look at the content

Taking a look at the blog post’s actual content is the first stage in the editing process. Here, you should evaluate the scope of your blog article and confirm if you’ve given your readers a complete picture of the subject you’re writing about. Check if the post is written in logical and straightforward order and if you’ve repeated yourself on any occasion. You want to be sure that your post offers value to your target audience.

When making your initial edit, be as harsh as possible. Take advantage of this moment to improve mediocre blog content into one your audience will adore. Also, equally importantly, the one that does well in search engine results.

#3 Don’t be afraid to seek help

Having your blog entries edited by an expert can make a huge difference. An editor can help you format your content in a way that is more engaging and user-friendly, and they can also point out the parts of your posts that are particularly great. Plus, there are plenty of free tools available online to help you. Overall, it should make editing your blog posts much easier.

Woman sitting at a dining table in the kitchen and researching tips for editing your blog posts on a laptop.A professional editor knows precisely how to tweak your posts in a way that will wow your readers.#4 Check readability

One of the most important things to check is the readability of your text. Is your post easy to read and understand, and can the average person read it without trouble? Also, double-check the length of your sentences and paragraphs. Keep in mind that both human readers and search engines like concise content.

That’s especially important today that mobile phone users make up the bulk of blog readers. Your reader’s mobile phone may make what seems like a wonderful paragraph on a desktop computer into an insurmountable wall of text.

Reading your writing aloud is the gold standard for determining its readability. If you read your work aloud, you’ll notice any parts that don’t sound natural or flow well. In addition, it will emphasize lengthy passages. Reading aloud forces you to focus on what’s actually on the page instead of what you expect to see when reading silently.

#5 Don’t forget to add a call to action

A call to action is an excellent addition to any piece of writing, so kudos if you remembered to include one in your draft. In case you haven’t come across the terms before, a “call to action” is an explicit request for the reader to take some action. It may say something like, “If you liked this piece, please share it.” or “Tell us what you think in the comments.” or essentially anything else that comes to your mind. The best place for CTA is at the end of your posts. That’s when your readers will decide where to go.

#6 Keep an eye out for common errors

There are some common mistakes writers make, so when proofreading your content, you should keep a lookout for these. After all, even the most skilled authors make a few blunders in their writing from time to time.

A Word document opened on a laptop.Even the best writers make mistakes, and that’s why it’s crucial to always edit your posts before hitting the publish button.

Besides doing a spell check, you should also pay close attention to the design and layout of your post. You must ensure they adhere to the guidelines you established when you first created your blog. Also, it’s important to use the appropriate terminology. Using the right words is essential to ensuring that your content is both informative and exciting.

Good luck editing your blog posts

We hope the tips from this article made editing your blog posts much simpler and more manageable. Dreams, Visions, and Signs from God

I wrote last week about the sudden and unexpected death of my niece. The family was especially concerned about the reaction of Millie’s younger sister, who has been profoundly handicapped, both physically and mentally, since birth. In fact, for many years, doctors gravely told her mother that she would die very soon or before a certain age—but after she’s been alive for four and a half decades, the predictions have long since ceased. However, Becky and Millie were extremely close, not only as sisters but also as Millie was one of Becky’s caregivers. All Becky knew at the end of the day was that Millie was in the hospital, and Becky couldn’t call her to wish her happy birthday.

After Millie died early Thanksgiving morning, the family called a minister Becky was close to and asked the pastor to help tell Becky about her beloved older sister’s death. The preacher asked Becky how she was, and she responded, “I had the best dream. I don’t know where it was, but it was the most beautiful place!” Then she named all the people she had seen in the dream: her father, all her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, close friends. She continued, “They were all so happy! It made me happy, too.”

The minister explained, “That beautiful place you saw was Heaven, and all those people were so happy because they were welcoming Millie home.”

God blessed Becky with this beautiful dream to show her that Millie is happy, healthy, and home. Becky and all of us who love Millie will continue to grieve for our loss, but we will rejoice for Millie.

Becky’s dream reminded me of two similar blessings I experienced around my husband Jack’s death—an incident not long before his death and a dream shortly after he died. I describe these double blessings in a blog post I wrote on the ninth anniversary of his passing.

Thank you, Lord God, for blessing Your children with dreams, visions, and signs to give us comfort and peace in difficult times. We give You praise and honor and glory. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Advent Begins

Sunday, November 27 is the first day of Advent, a time to prepare … to get ready. We remember the birth of Jesus as a baby and to His return in glory at the end of time. One way to do this is to spend more time in God’s Word and prayer.

God Orchestrates History for Our Salvation includes a daily Scripture, meditation, and prayer for the Advent and Christmas seasons, ending on Epiphany. May you be blessed by these Scriptures, thoughts, and prayers during this holy season.

All proceeds from the sale of the devotional will be donated to Love for the Least (L4L), a missionary movement that shares the good news of the gospel with the least and unreached by making disciples of Jesus who make disciples (2 Tim 2:2) and by helping to meet the physical needs of the poorest of the poor.

Thanksgiving and Grief

Today is Thanksgiving Day in the United States, a day where we meet with loved ones to celebrate and thank God for all His blessings. We usually find it easy to give thanks when we are surrounded by family and friends, enjoying a bountiful and delicious meal, and remembering all the things we recognize as blessings in our lives.

Yet Scripture promises us that when we approach the Lord with prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, He will give us His peace that passes all understanding. Not just when we are enjoying friends, food, joy, and the so-called good things in life. But always.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6-7

Thanksgiving for our family this year was very different than planned. My niece, who had turned 53 years old the day before and had no known serious medical conditions, went to be with the Lord early Thanksgiving morning. We are happy for her that she is whole and healthy and happy in Heaven, but those left behind are devastated. This is not what we expected. How can we celebrate and give thanks in the face of such loss?

The Bible reminds us not to grieve “as others do who have no hope.” God’s Word doesn’t tell us not to grieve, but not to grieve as those who have no hope. We have hope—faith, assurance—that while we may be separated from our beloved family member for now, we will be together again.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

Yes, we grieve today and in the days ahead. But we will approach God with prayers and supplication—and, yes, with thanksgiving. He will give us His peace that passes understanding in our grief, and one day we will be reunited not only with the amazing woman who died today, but also with all of the beloved family members and friends who have gone into our Father’s mansions.

Lord God, Father of all mercies and God of all comfort, in the midst of our grief, we come before You with thanksgiving. We thank You for the lives of who have gone before us. We thank You that they knew You as their Savior and that they are happy and healthy with You today. We thank You for Your peace that passes understanding. Most of all, Lord, we thank You that because Jesus died for our sins, we will spend eternity in Heaven with You and with believing loved ones. In His name we pray. Amen.

TO our prayers, O Lord, we join our unfeigned thanks for all thy mercies; for our being, our reason, and all other endowments and faculties of soul and body; for our health, friends, food, and raiment, and all the other comforts and conveniences of life. Above all, we adore thy mercy in sending thy only Son into the world, to redeem us from sin and eternal death, and in giving us the knowledge and sense of our duty towards thee. We bless thee for thy patience with us, notwithstanding our many and great provocations; for all the directions, assistances, and comforts of thy Holy Spirit; for thy continual care and watchful providence over us through the whole course of our lives; and particularly for the mercies and benefits of the past day; beseeching thee to continue these thy blessings to us, and to give us grace to show our thankfulness in a sincere obedience to his laws, through whose merits and intercession we received them all, thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

God Orchestrates History for Our Salvation: Advent Devotional

As soon as Thanksgiving is over—even earlier for many, especially retailers—it’s the Christmas season. People start shopping, decorating, cooking, partying, sending greeting cards, and decorating for “the holidays.” In the midst of all this busy-ness, it’s easy to lose track of “the reason for the season,” to forget that Christmas is a holy day, not just a holiday—a holy day to celebrate the birth of the Savior of the World.

That’s why many Christians observe Advent, a time of penitence and preparation for the coming of Christ. We are preparing to celebrate Christmas, the time when our Lord and Savior came to earth as a tiny and helpless baby. We remember the coming of Christ into our own hearts when we accepted Him as our Savior. And we look forward to Christ coming again to earth, this time in power and glory.

Will we be ready? The Bible teaches us to be ever-ready, as we don’t know when the Lord will return. Advent is a time to prepare … to get ready.

Love for the Least logohttps://lovefortheleast.org

Love for the Least (L4L) shares the good news of the gospel with the least and unreached by making disciples of Jesus who make disciples (2 Tim 2:2) and by helping to meet the physical needs of the poorest of the poor. The focus has always been on relieving suffering and building new lives among orphans and widows—and now refugees. There are more than 1,000,000+ refugees from ISIS in Northern Iraq where L4L is presently serving and providing relief among 30+ refugee villages and many UN refugee camps. L4L’s particular focus areas are strategic unreached portions of East Africa and the Middle East where God is moving.

Father Jerry and Stacy Kramer have served in the mission field for two decades, and I have known them and supported their ministry about half that time. With 250% inflation in the region, L4L needs financial assistance now more than ever. Political and cultural events are opening more doors for evangelism, and souls are being saved every day.

This year, let us celebrate the coming of Jesus by participating in the Advent Conspiracy:

Worship fully—not only in church but also in private devotionsSpend less—giving gifts that are meaningful rather than expensiveGive more—contributing some of the savings to help othersLove all—thinking of “the least of these,” not just loved ones

Each year, I make a devotional book available for believers to use for personal devotions and for inexpensive gifts for loved ones. Paperback and Kindle editions are available on Amazon.com, and the author proceeds are donated to Love for the Least. Love all this Advent season and be part of the remarkable move of God in the Middle East and Africa.

Finding A Blog Niche: Guest Post from Angela Johnson

Though you might not see it at first, finding a blog niche is one of the most important factors for your blog’s success. Knowing your target audience is essential in deciding what kinds of blog posts to write and what kinds of goods to provide. Most importantly, it will assist you in keeping your editorial calendar and business/marketing strategies in perspective as you develop them. But how to find the right niche for your blog? With the help of a writing and editing expert, we did thorough research and prepared a step-by-step guide to help you do just that.

A step-by-step guide to finding a blog niche

Finding a blog niche means that your blog should have a specific focus or specialty. If you targeted a wider audience, detecting gains in website visitors, SERP placement, affiliate commissions, and product sales would be much more challenging. You won’t be able to compete as a new blog if other mainstream blogs already offer similar content.

Photo of a laptop with a Google Analytics page opened on it.Although many bloggers skip this part, finding a blog niche is crucial to attracting the right audience.

Therefore, engaging a large number of people at once can be counterproductive. To attract a particular group of readers, you should focus on selecting a specialized topic area within blogging. Finding out what challenges your niche’s members are facing will help you develop some ideas for products that will aid them. That being said, let’s dive into how you can zero in on your sweet blogging spot that will consequently help you find your unique writing voice.

Step 1: Think about your interests

Creating a blog is a great deal of fun. A new and thrilling adventure awaits you after you’ve purchased your domain names, built your website, tweaked the design, and written your first article. The majority of bloggers, however, stop writing after only a few months because they lose interest in the process. Therefore, you must select a subject for your blog about which you are both knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing your thoughts.

It might be anything from your recent recreational vehicle purchase to a discussion of your favorite pastime. No prior knowledge of this field is assumed. All that’s required is that the subject matter in question is one that sparks genuine enthusiasm in your voice. Plus, you’ll be more eager to promote your content and show it to everyone if you genuinely care about the subject.

Step 2: Analyze your target market

As a next stage, you should verify that your target market is both sizable and profitable. Some light market research will be enough for this purpose. For example, let’s say you’re interested in rock climbing, among other things, and you are really keen on writing on this subject. Before doing so, determine how many people are interested in this subject and how much competition there is.

Woman sitting on the floor and writing a blog on her laptop.By researching your target audience, you’ll gain valuable insights and know what kind of content to serve them.

Google Trends is a great place to begin your investigation. Just type “rock climbing” and quickly discover how many people are interested in this subject. This is a vital step since it lets you see at a glance whether or not your topic’s popularity is on the rise, in steady decline, or stagnating. If you want to create a blog that endures for a long time, you should steer clear of themes that are losing popularity.

Step 3: Research keywords

Although the quality of your writing is of utmost importance, you also need to pay attention to optimization and find the right balance. But how do you balance quality and optimization? Using the right keywords is the answer. We strongly recommend using long-tail keywords as they will help you target a more specific audience. Long-tail keywords are longer more specific phrases that help you rank higher in search results and attract customers looking for what you have to offer—”how to write memoirs” rather than “memoirs,” for example.

There are plenty of tools online that can help you find the best keywords. For example, using Google’s Keyword Planner can help you narrow your focus and find profitable areas. You’ll need to be signed into your Google account to access it. You can create a large number of keyword ideas by entering a broad or first-level niche topic. You can find a plethora of additional low-competition phrases to choose from.

Step 4: Make sure you select a profitable niche

If you want to make money blogging, you need to pick a niche that can support advertising revenue and affiliate commissions. Checking to see whether well-known companies or businesses are advertising using your keywords is a simple way to verify this. You know you’ve got a winning niche if businesses are willing to pay for AdWords ads targeting consumers searching for terms related to your subject.

You can quickly and easily make money from your site with Google AdSense advertisements. However, selling affiliate products on your site is a better and more profitable strategy. For instance, promoting Amazon’s products is quite simple. Joining the company’s affiliate program requires no special skills or paperwork. You will earn a fee of roughly 10% on all sales made by customers you send to Amazon.

Woman sitting on the floor and writing a blog on her laptop.Finding the right blog niche can help you turn your hobby into a profitable business.

Let’s go back to the rock climbing example. Suppose you try reviewing rock climbing equipment, compiling lists of the finest rock climbing shoes, and linking them to relevant Amazon items. In that case, you might turn your writing into a very profitable business.

The Bottom Line

After finding a blog niche, it’s time to start writing unique content that your target audience will love and will help you stand out from the crowd. You can always reach out to a writing and editing expert to help you ensure your articles are truly top-notch. However, do keep in mind that once you’ve found a niche, your job isn’t done. You should constantly improve your content and continue researching your target audience; that way, you’ll learn about the challenges they face. Talk to them and read low-star product reviews in your blogging field (like the ones we looked up earlier on Amazon). See what they still suffer from after reading a book and participate in forums and sites like Quora. That’s the best way to ensure you’re writing relevant posts.

Top 5 Ways to Promote Your Content: Guest Post from Ben Foster

It can be difficult to gain an audience as a content creator in this day and age. The market is simply too crowded. This means that the chances of your content being discovered solely based on its quality are slim. To find an audience for your content in 2022, you must understand how to promote it. Fortunately, there are many ways you can do this. And to assist you in choosing the best option, we will talk about the top 5 ways to promote your content.

1. Create a Website

A website is an essential marketing tool these days, regardless of how traditional your business or customers are. It makes no difference what kind of content you’re producing. If you want to turn a hobby into a business, you need to give it a home, and a website is a great place to start. For the most part, you will gain most of your audience through your website. Being on Google means that your content will be available to everyone. In addition to serving as a valuable promotional tool in and of itself, a website is also crucial for tracking the results of other advertising campaigns and fine-tuning future efforts.

2. Make Use of SEO

While we’re discussing websites and Google, we should also discuss search engine optimization (SEO). With SEO, you can let Google do some of the promotion for your website. A solid SEO strategy includes many components, but one of the most important is using keywords. If you include relevant keywords in your content, Google will rank your website higher in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP). As a result, having a blog on your website is essential. On this blog, you will post content with all the relevant keywords, which will help get you more exposure and nurture your blog’s growth. A website blog will help you no matter what type of website you have or the type of content you create.

3. Use Paid Ads

Paid ads are the bread and butter of promotion, so use them as much as possible. Social media is the best way to accomplish this. Platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram provide advanced and comprehensive targeting capabilities, allowing you to choose your audience and segment them based on various characteristics. This can greatly assist you in developing and expanding your audience. Other suggestions for an efficient social media marketing plan include:

Use appropriate hashtags for every post.Create unique copy for every post.Tag other creators that work in the same niche as you.4. An Email Promotion Strategy

Email marketing is a strong and inexpensive way to promote your content or anything else. According to the most recent statistics, 87% of marketers utilize this channel to deliver their information, and email engagement is the most important indicator for measuring content effectiveness.
