Scripture for the First Wednesday in Advent
Ephesians 6:18
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Father, Your Word tells us to pray in the Spirit for all the saints. We want to pray in the Spirit, but our prayers are often hasty and self-centered. Draw our attention from the things of the world so we take time to pray in the Spirit. We pray for all the saints, that each of us will do our part to carry out our anointed...

Books We Love Holiday Contest
You probably have some folks on your Christmas list who would love a book (or several books!).
You can shop for Christmas gifts, enjoy getting to know new authors and books, and have a chance to win an e-book reader in the Books We Love Holiday Contest.
The grand prize is an eBookwise Reader. I have used an eBookwise for several years and love the fact that it's backlit. I've read through a four-hour power outage on this reader. Although I use the Kindle more now because of the Whispernet and t...
Scripture for the First Tuesday in Advent
2 Corinthians 10:4
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the
contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
Father, we thank you that You have given us weapons that are not of this world. Your divine power can demolish strongholds. Demolish the strongholds of apathy, sin, and hardheartedness in our hearts. Create new hearts in us that we may be refreshed and motivated to serve You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Scripture for the First Monday in Advent
Ephesians 6:11-12
Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Our Heavenly Father, the Bible tells us that our struggles are against the enemy of our soul and spiritual forces of evil. We come to You today asking that You bind, dismiss, and contend...

Scripture for the First Sunday in Advent
I'll be posting a Scripture and short prayer for every day of Advent. These are from Advent prayers I posted several years ago to a prayer chain in my parish. I hope you'll join me in these short devotions.
1 John 2:15-16
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world —the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the...

Advent
Today is the First Sunday in Advent, the first day in the liturgical season of Advent, which is the beginning of the Christian year.
As Father Chip Harper writes in his liturgy lesson for this Sunday:
Our Fathers in the Faith have chosen Scriptures accenting three Advents: the Advent of Christ's physical birth in Bethlehem, the Advent of Christ coming into our own lives, and the Advent of his Second Coming at the history's end.
We will begin the service today with blessing and lighting the...

Thanksgiving Blessings
I have many blessings to thank God for this Thanksgiving. You, my readers, are among those blessings.
May you be blessed with much to be thankful for and gratitude for even the smallest blessings.
MOST gracious God, by whose knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew; We yield thee unfeigned thanks and praise for the return of seed- time and harvest, for the increase of the ground and the gathering in of the fruits thereof, and for all the other blessings of thy...

Interview with Author Renae Brumbaugh
My guest today is Renae Brumbaugh, who is promoting her new devotional book,
Morning Coffee with James
.
It's fitting that we talk about this Bible study and devotional book during National Bible Week.
I reviewed Morning Coffee with James in an earlier post.
I don't remember how I found Renae's blog, but I've been an avid reader for her devotions for some time.
Lillie: Welcome to A Writer's Words, An Editor's Eye, Renae. Your road to publication sounds almost like a fairy tale, but you and I...

National Bible Week
National Bible Week has been celebrated during Thanksgiving Week every year since 1941.
If we want to have strong faith, we need to know God's Word, and the Holy Bible is His Word.
The Bible says
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17 KJV)
We can get to know God's Word in a variety of ways:
Daily Bible reading and devotions. I follow a guide available from my church: How to Have a Meaningful Time with God. I've also written before about studying the...November 21, 2009
Freelance Rates Survey Results
A few weeks ago, I discovered that freelance editing rates is the most popular search term people use to find this blog and the most popular post is How Much Will It Cost? Average Freelance Editing Rates. I decided to update the information in a new series and created an online survey to gather information.
The results of the survey are available as a PDF download. Only 45 people responded, and most of...
