Is Satan’s Plan Working?

This powerful video reminds us how easy it is to fall into Satan’s trap. Sometimes it’s more about neglecting the good than doing what is evil.

100 Essential Sites for Voracious Readers

[image error]Voracious readers love books. We can never have too many. I consistently have more than 500 books to be read on my Kindle, and I suspect many of you have many books in your “to be read” (TBR) file.

Not only do we love reading books, but we also love reading about books: blogs, literary magazines, reviews, and more.

The Masters in English website has compiled a list of 100 Essential Sites for Voracious Readers. Let me warn you, though, that you shouldn’t look at the list if you have an appointment or are in a time crunch on a project. You’re liable to miss your appointment or deadline as you spend hours checking out all the great sites.

Autism Awareness Month 2013

[image error]This is the first time I’ve written about autism. It was not on my radar for a long time, but we have several families with children with autism in our church. I came to realize while I caring for my husband with Alzheimer’s that autism and Alzheimer’s have a lot in common. Individuals with both of these disorders often tend to exhibit inappropriate behavior, poor social skills, and even violent outbursts. They don’t want to behave as they do, but the Alzheimer’s or the autism takes control.

Recognizing that there are many differences between the two disorders, seeing what they had in common helped me to understand and appreciate what parents and siblings of autistic children contend with. Parents love their children so much, but caring for them is challenging. One mother of a sweet little boy with autism said, “I love my son, but I hate autism!”

I was flabbergasted to learn from the Autism Society:

the prevalence of autism had risen to 1 in every 88 births in the United States and almost 1 in 54 boys.

Autism is a development disability, a very complex one, and many people with it exhibit different symptoms. You can learn more at the Autism Society website.

The image in this post is the Alzheimer’s Puzzle Ribbon from the Autism Society:

The puzzle pattern reflects the mystery and complexity of the autism spectrum. The different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with the condition. The brightness of the ribbon signals hope—hope that through increased awareness of autism, and through early intervention and appropriate treatments, people with autism will lead fuller, more complete lives.

Often we see children misbehaving or acting in unusual ways, and we assume their parents haven’t trained them well. But maybe it would be good to give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps the child has autism, and in spite of how well his parents train him, there are times he can’t control his behavior. Instead of muttering to ourselves about rowdy kids and irresponsible parents, maybe we should take a minute and pray for that family. If the child has autism, they certainly need prayer. And if the child is just behaving badly, prayer will still be helpful.

O MERCIFUL God, and heavenly Father, who hast taught us in thy holy Word that thou dost not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men; Look with pity, we beseech thee, upon all people with autism and their families  for whom our prayers are offered. Remember them, O Lord, in mercy; endue their souls with patience; comfort them with a sense of thy goodness; lift up thy countenance upon them, and give them peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Scripture for Easter 2013

1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, they *came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 Looking up, they *saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large. 5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he *said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. 7 But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’” 8 They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. 9 [Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it. 12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country. 13 They went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either. 14 Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. 17 These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” ~ Mark 16:1-18 (NASB)

He is risen! He is risen, indeed! Alleluia! Thank You, Lord! Amen and Amen.

Scripture for Holy Saturday 2013

42 When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. 45 And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid. ~ Mark 15:42-47 (NASB)

Lord, Joseph of Arimathea had been a secret follower of Jesus, but he gathered up courage to ensure that Jesus was properly buried. May I never be a secret follower but always be willing to tell others about You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Why Do We Call It Good Friday?

Have you wondered why the day Christ was crucified is called Good Friday?

Scripture for Good Friday 2013

22 Then they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they crucified Him, and divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take. 25 It was the third hour when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge against Him read, “THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 27 They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”] 29 Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. 32 Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him. 33 When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” 35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Behold, He is calling for Elijah.” 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. 38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” ~ Mark 15:22-30 (NASB)

Lord, I have always recognized the physical pain Jesus suffered on the cross. Now I understand, though, that the physical pain was nothing compared to the moment when he carried the full burden of all the sin of the world on His shoulders—the moment He cried out asking why You had forsaken Him because He who was without sin at that moment was separated from You for the first and only time, separated from You because of my sin and the sin of the whole world. How painful to be pure and blameless yet to take on the blame and punishment for the evil, sin, and corruption of the world. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. In the name of the One who gave His life for me. Amen.
