IELTS Report, topic: Two pie charts describing the proportions of visits to Ireland by age, gender and type of visit (from IELTS High Scorer’s Choice series, Academic Set 2)

This is a model response to a Writing Task 1 topic from High Scorer’s Choice IELTS Practice Tests book series (reprinted with permission). This answer is close to IELTS Band 9.

Set 2 Academic book, Practice Test 9

Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The pie charts below show the proportions of visits to Ireland last year by age group, and by gender and type of visit.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

You should write at least 150 words.

Two pie charts describing the proportions of visits to Ireland by age, gender and type of visit (from IELTS High Scorer's Choice series, Academic Set 2 book)

Sample Band 9 Report

Both pie charts focus on the proportions of visits to Ireland last year. However, while one provides data on the proportion of the different age groups of people who visited Ireland last year, the second pie chart provides data on the gender of the visitors and their reasons for visiting.

It can be clearly seen that the 25-34 year old and 45-54 year old cohorts comprised the largest proportion of visitors and that most people came to Ireland for leisure, not business.

The first pie chart shows that three age groups made up most of last year’s visitors to Ireland. These were 25 to 34 year-olds (23%), 35 to 44 year-olds (19%), and 45 to 54 year-olds (23%). Four other age groups made up the rest, ranging from 6% to 11% of visitors.

The second pie chart shows that Ireland received last year more male visitors than female visitors (56% to 44%). Business trips to Ireland did not make up a very significant amount of trips, 17% in total; however, the amount of business visits conducted by males was much higher, 13%, compared to 4% female business visits.

She got Band 7.5, he got Band 9, and here is their advice to YOU

Today we would like you to meet Amandeep and Sarthak, the two winners of our IELTS results competition. Amandeep got Band 7.5 in IELTS (a great score!) and Sarthak did the impossible – he scored a perfect 9!

In their winners’ interviews they shared some really useful tips, so have a quick read through and remember to apply this to your own practice sessions.

Amandeep said,

“I feel so honored to become a winner in your competition. I would love to share some words with the readers on how to ace the IELTS test.

First of all, I would like to thank IELTS-Blog.com, the website I continually followed and practiced on. Moreover, I have learned one thing while practicing, that it is worthless to surf various other websites online as they do not have authentic information and sometimes they mislead the learners. Most of those websites do nothing but confuse the learners. So try to practice hard on your own and keep a track of your improvements as I have done. Readers can also use the books published by IELTS-Blog for more guidance.

Hope my few words would help the learners to score better and ace their test.”

Note: while preparing this blog post, we couldn’t help but notice that 3 out of 4 Sarthak’s recommendations are the same as Simone Braverman’s advice in her books ‘Ace the IELTS‘ and ‘Target Band 7‘. Well, that’s one more reason for you to follow these tips with confidence 🙂

Sarthak said,

“For Listening, I would advise and encourage students to scribble down information they perceive as important on their question paper as they listen, even if they’re looking for specific answers. Sometimes the answers are in the details we accidentally may have missed.

For the Reading section, I’d advise to not skim through a passage with the intent to come back to it later looking to find specific answers, but to rather comprehensively read through a passage the first time itself with undivided attention. This makes it easier to come back to it and scan through looking for answers in the right spot.

For writing and speaking, I went through sample answers and responses for many prompts across practice tests to understand what’s expected.

Lastly, I can’t stress this enough, understand why your answers were incorrect and make sure to really learn to not repeat the same mistake again. Identifying and dissecting weaknesses is the best way to get better.”

IELTS Report, topic: Describing two maps of a city, in 1960 and now

This is a model answer for a Writing Task 1 from the IELTS exam in Thailand, shared yesterday. This response is likely to score no less than Band 8 in IELTS.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task

The maps below describe the city in 1960 and now. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words

Band 8 Answer

The two maps are describing the same city, in 1960 and at present. The main features that can be seen are the residential and business districts, roads, a river, an airport and a government building.

It is clear that with the passage of time the population has grown tenfold and the amenities and infrastructure developed in a very significant way.

In 1960 both the business district and the residential area around it were relatively small, as was the airport, located to the east of the city along a major road, crossing the city from west to east. Another major road ran through the city from south to north and there was a small bridge over a river. There was a government building on the riverbank, next to the bridge.

Since 1960 the business district has spread out to an area at least 4 times what it was before, and the residential district has quadrupled in size. The airport has experienced a significant growth as well, in line with the increase in population to 200,000. The river has been diverted into a man-made lake with a dam in the heart of the city, with the business and residential areas around it to the north and the south. A longer bridge now connects the lake’s shores. In addition to the two roads that criss-crossed the city before, a new road was built and another, smaller building for government officials was added in the business district.

Teacher’s comment: This is a good example of a high-scoring response. All the maps’ features were covered in this well-developed report. The writer’s vocabulary and word choice are adequate and the organisation of information is logical. Overall, this work seems worthy of Band 8.
