Speaking test

Part 3 (Discussion)

We’ve been talking about sports, and now, in the third part of the test, I would like to ask you a few more questions related to this.

1. In your opinion, is it a good idea for children to do sports? Why or why not?

As a firm believer in living an active and healthy lifestyle, I believe that children should absolutely participate in sports. This not only improves their physical health, but also their mental and social skills, as well as overall well-being. Being active stimulates the release of endorphins in our body, and playing sports promotes teamwork, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, which are vital for personal growth and development.

2. Do you think physical education should be mandatory in school, and why?

Yes, I think it should. The majority of students spend a significant amount of their day sitting in a classroom, so it is imperative that they get regular opportunities to move their bodies and engage in physical activities. Physical education in schools not only helps students develop healthy habits, but it also improves their academic performance, because it promotes cognitive function, and memory retention.

3. Should governments fund athletes who want to compete abroad, what do you think?

I do believe that sports men and women who represent our country on an international level deserve recognition and support, but the government should also prioritise the more pressing issues, such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

4. How important is it for a country to have athletes to represent it on the world stage?

In my opinion, it is crucial for a country to have athletes representing them in international competitions. When we see our country’s flag being raised at the Olympics or other major sporting events, it gives us a deep sense of national pride and unity. It also provides a platform to showcase our culture and talent on a global level, which can result in increased international trade and tourism.

5. Would you say it’s a good idea for a country to hold a major sports event, such as the World Cup?

Yes, I think it is. Apart from the financial benefits, it also sends a message to citizens about the importance of physical activity. Sports have far-reaching benefits that extend beyond physical health. It plays a significant role in our social, mental, and overall well-being.

6. What are the advantages of holding an international sports event for the host country?

I’d say that hosting a major sports event such as the World Cup has many advantages for the host country. It significantly boosts the economy, by creating job opportunities, increasing tourism, and promoting domestic spending. It also provides an opportunity to display the country’s culture, its history and hospitality to the world, improving its global reputation in that way.

7. And what would you say are the disadvantages?

Well, the ones I can think of, are the outsourcing of labour, increased traffic and congestion, and environmental degradation. Another thing to consider is the financial burden of building necessary infrastructure, and ensuring security that also falls on the shoulders of the host country, often resulting in a net loss.

Ziaad achieved an impressive Band 8.0 – here is how he did it

Hello everyone, Simone here, and today I’d like you to meet Ziaad Nuseeb from Mauritius. When Ziaad sent his IELTS test results to enter our monthly IELTS results competition, I had a feeling he was going to win, because he received a Band 8 overall – with an epic 8.5 in Reading!

Ziaad credits a big part of his success to our High Scorer’s Choice practice test series. When he purchased the books, he wrote to us and said, “Thank you a lot Simone and Robert. Very good materials indeed. I finally bought them and am convinced it was a good decision.”

But Ziaad’s own efforts were just as important! He put in the hard work and used these books like a champ. Talk about dedication paying off! His story is a massive inspiration for anyone preparing for IELTS, showing that with the right study resources, you can reach for the stars.

In his winner’s interview Ziaad shared the important parts of his journey that brought him that impressive Band 8.0. These things really aren’t hard to do, but look where they can get you!

Ziaad said,

“First of all I wish to thank you for your materials which were really helpful for exam preparation.

Tips

1. Be a voracious reader. Keep reading different texts in different contexts.

2. Attempt all practice exams. Correct them and repeat. Find your weaknesses and keep improving.

3. Listen to BBC world and CNN news regularly. Select and listen to British, Canadian, Australian and American accent. Keep practicing the listening tests until you achieve more than 8.5.

4. Attempt a range of writing practices in different contexts and topics. Let knowledgeable peoplecorrect your tasks.

5. Speak with friends and teachers by practicing the materials provided: at least 10-15 tests.

Once again its hard work which pays off at the end of the day. Perseverance and determination are the keys. Never give up. I did that and I was successful.”

Congratulations on your massive success, Ziaad!

In a world where being an English language pro can open doors, Ziaad’s triumph is a reminder that hard work, mixed with killer study resources, is a surefire recipe for success.

Here is a high-scoring Speaking Test Part 2 model answer for the cue card that was shared by a student from Vietnam. The answer shows a good way to respond to this question. You can find the answers in the other parts here: Part 1, Part 3.

Part 2 (Cue Card)

Talk about a popular sports venue, such as a stadium, that you like. You should say

– why it is popular
– what sports are played there
– whether or not you visited it
– and explain why you like this sports venue.

Answer

There is one popular sports venue that I admire, and it’s the Wembley Stadium in London. The Wembley Stadium is known for hosting some of the most iconic and exciting sporting events around the world. From football to rugby, athletics to boxing, this stadium has long been the epicentre of some historical sports moments.

The stadium first opened in 2007, replacing the old Wembley Stadium, which was demolished in 2002. It’s now the largest stadium in the UK and the second-largest in Europe.

The Wembley Stadium is primarily known for football, with the England national team playing their home games there. It has hosted many significant football competitions, including the FA Cup Final and the UEFA Champions League Final. Not only does it host the best football teams from around the world, but it also hosts musical concerts, contributing to its status as an iconic venue.

The atmosphere, the energy, and electricity of the crowd on match days are unparalleled, making it an experience of a lifetime. It doesn’t just provide the best possible experience for sports lovers, but it is a source of national pride, celebrated by people from all walks of life. The Wembley Stadium is a fantastic place to watch your favourite team win, and without any doubt deserves its place as one of the most beloved sports venues globally.

IELTS Speaking Test, Part 1 questions with model answers (Hometown + Housework)

IELTS Model Speaking Answers Band 9, 2023

Here are some high-scoring Part 1 model answers for the Speaking Test that was shared by a student from Vietnam. The answers below show a good way to respond to these questions.

NEW! In this podcast episode you can LISTEN to all the questions and answers. It’s great to improve your pronunciation, intonation and overall fluency!

Or you can listen on YouTube (turn subtitles on):

Speaking test

Part 1 (Interview)

1. Where do you live?

I was born and raised in Sheffield, in the north of England, but now I live in the beautiful city of San Francisco, California. This city is like no other, with its iconic Golden Gate Bridge, diverse culture, and mouth-watering cuisine.

2. What do you like about the area where you live?

One of the many things I like about San Francisco is its rich history and culture. It’s a melting pot of different cultures that come together to create something unique. The food is amazing! San Francisco is known for its seafood, sourdough bread, and burritos. Another thing I love is the weather. It’s never too hot or too cold, and the fog hovering over the city gives it a mystical feel.

3. Do you usually wake up early in the morning, or late, and why?

Well, I am an early bird, and mornings are the most productive time of the day for me. It’s when I feel energised and ready to tackle the day’s challenges. It gives me time to catch up on my work, do some exercise, and plan my day ahead. On the flip side, waking up late makes me feel drowsy and sluggish, like I’m just wasting my day away.

4. Now I would like to talk about house chores. Do you like to do house chores?

Weirdly enough, I don’t mind housework, because it actually brings me a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, when everything is clean and organised. I like keeping my living space fresh and healthy.

5. What house chore do you dislike the most, and why?

Well, the chore that I dislike the most is probably washing the dishes. It’s a tedious job that requires a lot of effort and time. Sometimes after a long day, it’s the last thing I want to do.

6. Did you do housework when you were a child?

Absolutely! I grew up in a family where everyone had to contribute to the household chores. We were taught to take care of our belongings, clean up after ourselves, and help each other out. It was an essential part of our days growing up, and we learned it early on.

6. What chores did you do as a child?

In my family, all the kids had their share of household chores to complete. I was responsible for keeping my room tidy, making my bed, and doing my own laundry. I also had to do the dishes, sweep and mop the floors, dust the house, and help clean the bathroom. It was a lot of work, but it taught me to be organised and disciplined.

Divyansh got Band 9 in Reading and Listening, doing something YOU could easily do

Hi everyone, this is Simone and here is the inspiring success story I am excited to share with you today. The story is about a person who prepared for IELTS while working full time, on his own, and in just one month developed and polished his skills enough to get top scores in Listening and Reading.

Divyansh Sharma lives in India and speaks Hindi. Earlier this year he took the IELTS test and got an Overall Band 8 with two straight 9’s for Listening and Reading. This amazing score secured him the first place in our monthly IELTS Results Competition, and in his winner’s interview he revealed what he attributes his success to. Here is how his journey to Band 8 started, in his own words:

“I followed your High Scorer’s Choice Series for my preparation. In one month, I managed to build up my level as the tests prepared my brain to handle difficult questions in the reading and listening section.

I mostly practiced at home alongside my 9 to 5 job. After two weeks, I was confident in my aptitude and decided to register for my exam.

My tips for achieving a high score in IELTS would be to understand the question and the text rather than relying on tips and tricks on YouTube. Many of the videos offer false guidance and incorrect methods towards the question.

I also advise test takers to follow the news for idea generation. You could read Business Insider and Fox News for your daily digest.”

Truly proud of your success, Divyansh Sharma, well done on that Overall Band 8!

IELTS essay, topic: More and more people participate in extreme sports (reasons and solutions)

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 June 2023

This essay topic was seen in recent IELTS tests in Sri Lanka and Nigeria.

More and more people participate in extreme sports. Why do people take part in these dangerous sports? What can be done to reduce the danger associated with such activities?

Sample Band 8 Essay

In recent years, extreme sports have become increasingly popular among people of all ages. People are drawn to the thrill and adrenaline rush that comes with participating in these risky activities. From jumping out of airplanes to riding huge waves, these dangerous sports offer a unique set of challenges and opportunities for those willing to try them out.

Despite the obvious risk associated with extreme sports, there are still many people who participate in such activities. Some are driven by a need for adventure or a desire to test their physical capabilities. Others simply enjoy the sense of accomplishment they gain after mastering their chosen activity. Many cite the feeling of freedom and joy that accompanies extreme sports as something that cannot be found elsewhere.

To reduce risks associated with extreme sports, it is important for participants to first receive proper training and instruction from certified professionals. This will help ensure that they understand how to stay safe while engaging in such activities. It is also essential for participants to wear appropriate safety gear, such as helmets and protective clothing, when participating in any kind of sport. Finally, extreme athletes should always make sure they are aware of their abilities and limitations before taking part in any kind of dangerous activity, so they don’t overextend themselves or put themselves in danger unnecessarily.

Overall, while extreme sports can be extremely dangerous, they can also be a source of immense joy and satisfaction. Participating in such activities does not necessarily mean that individuals are putting themselves in peril, if all the essential safety precautions are taken. With proper training, equipment, education and awareness of one’s own limitations, anyone can enjoy these kinds of daring pursuits, knowing that the risks are properly managed.
