Searching for Inspiration
It’s been an amazing albeit exhausting two weeks. I’ve been going non-stop and the funny thing about editing is how your brain decides it wants to write new stuff too. Sometimes you need to search our inspiration. But for the last two weeks, I’ve been bombarded with inspiration.
1. Hurricane Sandy–The photos from the internet (not the hoax ones) but the really ones each tell a story. Ok, so even the hoax ones do too. There was a photos of the Statue of Libery with a huge wave behind that many people later said came out of the movie The Day After Tomorrow. I rethought it and agreed. I’ve seen the movie.
2. My cats Bella and Buffy and my dog Pete decided to do the cutest things, really children’s book material. Bella, in particular was so upset by the storm that she hopped onto the sofa and sat in the left corner curled up. When she first came to my house as a kitten, that was her first “spot” to sit in. That was her refuge spot when she was scared.
3. Now there’s inspiration and then there’s just plain distraction. I thought when I got my power back I would just hop over to Facebook and see what’s happening. Some people felt obliged to raise the spirits of others. Bless their hearts. A romance author who will be nameless but she always makes me smile has been sharing this bit of inspiration around with some other authors. All I could say was, “Oh, my!”
Yes, definitely, oh my! Now where was I? Susan, you need to focus! LOL
4. When I was too tired to edit anymore by flashlight, I resorted to my TO READ pile. On top was Stardust by Neil Gaiman. I loved the movie. I’m already loving the book, but I’m reading it in increments when I’m too tired to edit. I find the book very inspiring.
5. When I go to a con, it sticks with me for a while. I use this old trick where I keep one small bag from the con packed. I wait a week or two or three and then unpack it. It’s like giving myself a present. In this case, it was my notebook with notes on different panels, not only what I said, but what I learned. I learned about an early fiction called Varney the Vampire and decided to seek it out. It’s more than worth it. Right now I’m reading it for free at http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/toc/modeng/public/PreVar1.html
But if I keep loving it, I will mostly buy a copy for my collection. http://www.amazon.com/Varney-Vampire-The-Feast-Blood/dp/0979587158
This copy is for sale by Amazon.
At Albacon, I also learned the next book in the Vampires of New England by Inanna Arthen will be coming out soon. I don’t know about you, but I’m inspired to make out my wish list.
6. Dreams. I write what I dream.
-I have to tell you, it is tough to edit when inspiration is coming at you from all sides. Editing is the other half of writing. What I have noticed is language and the joy in lingering over the words so the readers gets the full experience. It’s back to editing I go, but when I turn in my next set of edits to my editor, I will be leaping on several notebooks to write as fast as I can the tales born of the most recent inspiration.
If you have a way to become or find inspiration, please, share it with us in the comment box below.
Hugs and continue to be safe. There are still street lights out, people out of power, and trouble with electice lines.

Does Networking Help? by Marian Lanouette
What I’m reading this week: Readers Shadow E-magazine debut issue. What are you reading?
This week I got the most wonderful surprise. A new e-magazine created by a reader hit the internet yesterday. On the cover was my December release As the World Ends. The shock and the excitement made my day. Not only was it chosen over so many talented authors and books. It was also picked to be reviewed. As the World Ends received five stars out of five stars. Did I cry with joy? You bet.
This was a huge honor. Once again, I want to take this opportunity to thank Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Kate Felix Mizanin.
How did I grab the coveted cover? I honestly don’t know. Some might call it networking. I call it making friends wherever I go. In the last two years, I’ve met some incredible, talented people who shared their knowledge and friendship. One of them was this brilliant young lady I met last year online when she started up the Read2Review site. We hit it off immediately and started conversing with each other. She in England, me here in the states. What I found was a brilliant mind. The knowledge and ambition it took to create a site to showcase her love of books, amazed me. It was professional and eye-catching. A site I hate to leave. I read everything on the pages before I hit the close button. You see, Read2Review’s Kate had a vision and in just one year, she has had over 70,000 visitors to her site. And not just in England, no she took this international. Pretty impressive, isn’t it?
I love going into the site daily to check out new author and titles. Obviously, I’m not alone.
If you are an author reading this, I would rush over to the site and check it out. If interested, you can contact me off loop and I will supply Kate’s email for an opportunity to network with her and see how and when your book might appear in the magazine.
If you are a reader http://www.read2review is a site and magazine that will draw you in to worlds beyond the ordinary. It covers all genres and I’ve found the reviews to be right on the money. Enjoy.
Click on the magazine cover to your right. It will take you to the emagazine and on your left, click read.

Remember When Halloween was on Oct 31st? by Gerri Brousseau
Last year on October 29th, we folks living in Connecticut experienced a blizzard that left over a foot of snow in its wake. Because the trees had yet to drop their leaves, many went down due to the added weight of the heavy snow, and took power lines all over the state with them. We were left with no power for days, and some of us were in the dark for weeks. Thinking back, I managed to get through it and was none the worse for wear. I was pretty lucky because I happen to have a fireplace. I was warm and dry, and was able to cook in the fireplace as well as on the grill. The worse part of it was when it got dark. I didn’t have my e-reader at that time so I couldn’t even read. The radio was the window to the world, but soon the batteries died and that window closed.
Finally after a few days, we got shoveled out and ventured out in search of … batteries. The shelves of the local grocery store were empty. I felt like I was living in a futuristic novel taking place after a nuclear attack. I felt like I was scavenging for anything that could be used for survival.
Halloween was postponed last year. How could that happen? Well, surely it would never happen again. Oh no?
This year, on the exact same day (10/29) we got nearly a direct hit by Hurricane Sandy. The Governor declared a state of emergency and the President approved it. The tides rose up 24 feet above level. The winds came in at 90 mph. Roofs were torn off homes, trees blown down, New York City had flooding in the subway tunnels and even Wall Street closed. The famous Atlantic City boardwalk is gone. Entire neighborhoods in New Jersey have vanished. My friends in other parts of the country are sending texts, emails and messages on Facebook wondering if we are all OK. Yes, for some the power has gone out and the power company is saying it will be a while before it will go back on. Again, the radio becomes the window to the world. And again … for some … Halloween is postponed.
I was pretty lucky in that where I live we didn’t get hit all that hard. We got rain and a heck of a lot of wind, but pretty much escaped unscathed. Thank heaven. Our hearts go out to those who were affected by the fury of Sandy, and we keep them in our prayers. As always, the American people prove to be resilient in the way they all pull together in a time of crisis. I can’t help but wonder why it takes a crisis to bring us together.
If you live in the area, please tell us how you weathered the storm. If you live in another part of the country, please tell us what your news media is telling you about those of us hit by Sandy.

Happy Halloween
Hi all, thought I’d do something fun for Halloween. Below is based on a true story of how a friend of mine had her first… well keep reading and enjoy!
“Thanks mom!” Sara slammed the door of her mother’s ’88 Honda accord and walked up the cement path to her friend, Lacey’s, house. She hiked her bag up on her shoulder and grinned. Halloween night and they were having a co-ed Halloween party. Almost everyone in her 7th grade class would be there, but most especially Erik. It didn’t hurt that Lacey lived in front of a cemetery either. That would only make the night extra spooky.
“You’re here!” Lacey swung the door to her house wide. “Just in time too. We were just about to play hide-and-go-seek in the cemetery. Erik’s here already too.” She winked as she stepped back, letting Sara in. “My mom just ordered pizza so we have an hour to kill and figured this would get the spookiness started.”
“You don’t even like spookiness; I’m surprised you want to play in the cemetery.” Sara placed her hand on her hip.
Lacey shrugged. “I know, but we are going off in pairs. I’ve already paired you up with Erik as everybody agreed that boy and girl pairs were the best. So come on.” Lacey grabbed her hand and tugged, leading her downstairs to the basement and out the glass sliding doors into the back yard. A couple motion sensor lights lit the grass and the sparse trees behind a group of about twenty boys and girls.
“Here she is,” Lacey said. “Now we have ten pairs. We’re ready to go.”
Erik glanced up as they joined the group, his light brown eyes lighting up at the sight of her. Or may she imagined they did. “Hey,” he said. “You’re my partner.”
Sara stuck her hands in her jeans pockets and smiled. “So I heard. Who are we hiding from?”
“Mark and Jane volunteered to be the seekers for the first round.” He grabbed her hand and tugged. “Come on, I know you’re fast.” Sara let him lead her, running through the trees and into the cemetery. Their long strides covered ground quickly as they passed manicured bushes, a narrow road that wound through the cemetery and several marble benches.
“Back here.” Erik pulled her with him as he got on all fours and crawled along the damp grass. Fortunately she wore jeans and not one of her nicer pants.
“What are we doing here? And why so far?”
Erik sat, leaning against a marble bench. “We’ll be covered by the bushes. Not to mention they probably won’t run this far.”
Sara had to agree with him there. “I don’t think anyone will find us here.” She sat. “But don’t you think this is a little too far?”
Erik twisted his lips into a shy smile as he glanced down at his lap and then back at her. “Not really.” He lifted his hand and tucked her hair behind one ear. “You’re really pretty you know.” He leaned closer and touched his lips to hers.
Sara kissed him back briefly before pulling away. Something cold dug into the palm of her hand. She lifted her palm and glanced down at it. The numbers eighteen ninety-eight were pressed into her skin. Ugh, she had just had her first kiss on top of a grave.

10 Reasons to Buy My New Erotic Romance! by Leia Shaw
Today is the release day of The Dom with a Safeword!!!!
Yes, I’m using this to pimp my book. Like all my self-promo posts, below is the blurb, an excerpt, and 10 reasons to buy my book, co-authored with Cari Silverwood and Sorcha Black.
1. It’s funny.
This could be the breakthrough she’d been waiting for. And it looked completely abandoned – unkempt and not a single light on inside or outside of the house.
She crept closer, ignoring the shudder that rocked her. Now was not the time to chicken out. She was a paranormal investigator for fucksake.
“If there’s something strange…in your neighborhood,” a soft voice sang behind her. “Who you gonna call?”
2. There’s a ghost.
Her fingers grasped the hard plastic of her flashlight and she shot to her feet, whirling the light around. Big fucking mistake.
Something floated by the light. So briefly, she almost didn’t catch it. Her heart leapt in her throat. It crossed the light again – gaunt, translucent figure – then disappeared.
3. It’s the only book I know of with a gender-confused, bi, switch, brat.
“Oh? And how do I look?”
Taking a step back, Sabrina examined her, gesturing for her to turn. Q just crossed her arms and raised her brows. Sabrina huffed. “Like a scary, dyke, mentally-unbalanced goth chick who needs a makeover.”
4. It’s the only book I’ve ever seen that addresses the unique kink of Mummification
She chuckled at mummification option. “Hey, Q. Want to mummify me? Then I can haunt you in your sleep.” Opening her eyes wide, she put her arms out and rocked back and forth like a mummy. “Kinky best friend mummy…raaaaa…”
5. It’s got a sexy, confident but non-asshole-ish Dom.
Suddenly, he jumped toward her and landed on her rock, crowding her until she slipped backward with a yelp. Strong arms caught her before she fell, but he didn’t set her right. He held her suspended, just a little off balance so she had to depend on him to stay upright. Frantically, she grasped his shoulders and held them hard.
“You better make sure your mouth doesn’t write checks your ass doesn’t want to cash,” he growled. He narrowed his eyes and added, “Or maybe I should spank you right here. Is that what you’re asking for?”
6. There’s a seance.
She closed her eyes and exhaled a deep breath. “Oh spirits of the…um…house of Jude,” she winced at how amateur she sounded, “we humbly ask for your presence this evening.”
She paused. Silence.
The Idiots Guide to Holding a Séance said she might feel movement in the room before hearing a voice – a sign that a spirit wanted to be reached. She waited, listening, feeling with all her senses. Nothing.
She tried again. “Benevolent spirits, if you are present, give us a sign.” The book said to let the energy run through her body, fluid like water, with no expectations, no boundaries. So she thought of water – flowing streams of energy and love and peace and…other good stuff that would bring the spirits forth. But the only thing she could feel was the sudden urge to pee.
8. It’s got a heroine with some spirit.
Jude looked down at her lazily, not even a little out of breath. Bastard. “I know you like to play rough, Q. Do you remember your safeword?”
She nodded.
“Okay, then. Game on.”
She tried to scrabble out from under him, but he pinned her to the floor and kissed her. Her will to fight drained as she felt his hard cock pressing at her through his jeans. She wrapped her legs around him, returning his kiss.
“That’s it?” he said. “No more fight out of you? You were easier to tame than I thought.” He pushed himself up, sitting back on his heels. “Now I’m going to tan your backside for biting me.”
Easy to tame? Fuck you, sunshine.
9. Hot, kinky sex anyone?
With her mouth out of action, she seemed to have dropped straight into submissive mode and only whimpered a little as he put on the collar, then the wrist and ankle cuffs.
“Tonight,” he murmured in her ear, “You will address me as Sir, always. Mistakes will be corrected with the crop. Understood?”
10. You need to find out why this poor Dom needs a safeword!
Late at night, on an amateur ghost hunt, Sabrina and her best friend Q are caught trespassing by the gorgeous, blond Jude. The embers of attraction between them sizzle when they discover Jude’s kinks match their own. Jude is a Dom on his last summer of freedom before starting the prison sentence that is med school. Q is a badass bi switch who knows what she wants, and for years it’s been her cute, doe-eyed straight friend Sabrina. But the only way to get into Sabrina’s heart and panties may be with Jude’s fist wrapped in her hair.
Domming the bratty Q and mischievous Sabrina isn’t going to be easy, but Jude relishes the challenge. At the end of the summer, will they find a way to stay together when everything is tearing them apart?
Warning: this book contains adult material including the use of multiple implements to bring bratty subs to their knees, scaffolding doubling as bondage apparatus, and a haunted house. No ghosts were harmed in the making of this book.
BDSM elements, M/f/f, f/f
“Sabrina’s energy leaps off the pages. Q has dark edges but the protector instinct and vulnerability endears you to her. As with Cari’s other Doms, Jude is confident without being an overbearing arse. I like that he is in control but isn’t perfect.” – author Bianca Sarble.
“The sex and BDSM elements were hot. And the characters were fun and quirky.” – author Casea Major.
Here’s a little excerpt:
In the midst of the evil looking displays, Sabrina resembled a virgin sacrifice. The little white sundress and shiny pink lip gloss marked her as prey. She had even tied her shoulder-length blonde hair back with a big white ribbon. It was Sabrina’s idea of a joke, dressing like this to go to some of the edgier stores in town. Although she’d meant for it to be ironic, it was keeping Q in a constant state of distraction. Visions of Sabrina bound and helpless flashed like an old film in her head.
Q avoided looking at her – it was making her mouth water. From the twinkle in her eyes Q could see it was the reaction Sabrina had been hoping for.
She was so damned confusing. Sabrina swore she was straight, but she was such a tease. She obviously liked Q’s attention, but rejected her on an intellectual level. However, physically she was starting to give Q mixed messages. It gave her reason to hope.
At that very moment Sabrina was leaning over a glass jewelry display, the hem of her little sundress barely covering the bottom of her ass. She gave Q a sassy smile over her shoulder and turned back to shopping.
The big tattooed store attendant cast an admiring glance over Sabrina’s shapely legs and nodded at Q, giving her the thumbs-up. “Yours, Q?”
“I wish, Cross,” she muttered back.

Sex in Public

Available now from Tirgearr
No, it’s not what you’re thinking! I’m actually referring to a panel we had at Albacon last weekend. Saturday night before the ‘midnight’ erotic reading at 11pm, there was a panel on sex in speculative fiction. The majority of the panel were us folks who write paranormal romance (more or less) including NoP head honcho Susan Hanniford Crowley, Bianca D’Arc and Jo Lynne Valerie. The name of the moderator escapes me at the moment (Sue can probably remind me) but I knew we were in for a challenge when she referred to sex scenes as ‘intimate interludes’! O_o
I guess some people find it a challenge to talk about sex, but not usually those who write it — do they? Or am I wrong here? I don’t get enough opportunities to read my stuff aloud so I’m always looking for opportunities. But when you write sexy there aren’t so many.
I can understand that a lot of people find graphic sexual scenes embarrassing if they’ve been raised to have a puritanical attitude toward sex. But if people show up for a reading advertised as ‘adult’ in content and explicitly erotic, wouldn’t you know what you’re in for?
Here’s a couple videos I made reading my stories a while back; no explicit sex. You can’t control who sees a video on YouTube really, but a bit of steam.

Calm Before the Storm
It was fun seeing old friends and making new ones at Albacon last weekend. Sometimes I get the post con blues. Cons are such a flurry of activity; running from event and event; passing old friends in the hall. To the left you see Author Anna James and I at the booksigning table. We thank Author Rebecca Hart for the photo. It was a tough one to get one with the sun so bright behind us. I’ve tried to adjust it more so we’re more visible.
I was thrilled to hang out with Author Bianca D’Arc. It was great to sit down and talk and catch up on our lives. It seems life has been moving fast for me lately. As I write this, I am babysitting the adorable grandbaby Penelope. She is sleeping right now. That’s my Connecticut shirt.
As I do the day job, take care of the family, and work on my book edits, (I love book edits. Really I seriously love reading what my editor thinks will make my book better.) I am preparing for the storm that is supposed to whack Connecticut either Monday or Tuesday. The flashlights have been checked. We’ll have to get more water and also fill the bath tubs. It was around this time last year when we were hit by the October snowstorm. It took people completely off guard as snow in this state in October is usually inconsequential.
For me this is the beginning of my intense writing season. As soon as I’m done with edits, it is on to another book that’s been floating in my dreams. But back to the edits. I want this next book to be my best one yet, so I’m being studious in chosing words and examining paragraphs. I’m excited and focused.
Back to the impending disaster: I could not help but notice that the weather reporters are positively gleeful about Hurricane Sandy. Well, I’m battering down the hatches and printing out. I will even work by flashlight. The adventure continues.
