Miss Lulu

Our darling girl, Miss Lulu, Madame, the Irish Terror, the Tartlet, Slinky Malinky, Lulu McGoo, Miss Bug, Little Heart, the Turdburger, Wicked Little Dog, Her Royal Naughtiness will be crossing the rainbow bridge tonight.
We are all devastated, but it’s time to let her go with love and grace. She’s almost 14, which is a great and venerable age for an IT. She’s had a wonderful life and given so much joy to her dads and me and everyone who met her. Well, maybe not some of the dogs who didn’t meet her exacting standards. She did love people though, and embraced her weirdo little brother Johnny the beagle when he moved in (“He might be a weirdo but he’s my weirdo!”)
When she was about 4 months old, Ron brought her over to my old house for dinner; she was all legs and snoot and so timid. She hid under the dining table until I gave her a piece of rib fillet. I don’t think she’s ever forgotten that. When I came to live here, she just accepted me. “Well, of course you’re here, now pat me behind my ears while I sit on your feet.”
It’s been a hard couple of months and Ron and Stephen have done everything they could for her, but it’s time. She is absolutely adored and will be forever The Very Best Wicked Little Dog with the Very Best Dads and a Not Bad Random Aunt Who Came to Live with Her.
Spare a thought for her today, the world will be a dimmer place.

Cover Reveal: The Briar Book of the Dead
I’m so happy! You might be able to hear the delighted squeeeeeing. That’s me looking at the cover for The Briar Book of the Dead, which is coming out in Feb of 2024 from Titan Books. Did I mention it’s available for pre-order?
Ellie is the first non-witch in three hundred years to born into a family of witches – the Briars who rule Silverton and hold the border against the Darklands. But Ellie discovers she’s got another altogether unexpected power and she’s going to need all the help she can get as the world of the Briars begins to come apart at the seams.
This will be my third book for Titan, set in the world of the Sourdough, Bitterwood and Tallow-Wife collections (Tartarus Press). It has some connection to my novella Of Sorrow and Such (Tor.com), but you don’t need to have read the novella to enjoy Briar Book (but it definitely won’t hurt if you have!).

The Bone Lantern won a Shirley Jackson Award!!!

Well, does what it says on the tin, I guess.
I woke up this morning to a variety of texts and social media taggings to say that my weird little novella, The Bone Lantern, has won the Shirley Jackson for Best Novella.
Absolutely surreal!
A huge congrats to all the finalists and winners, and to the judges and organisers for all their hard work. Much love to JS Breukelaar for collecting the award for me at ReaderCon and reading my speech!
And thanks once again to the lovely Marie O’Regan for commissioning The Bone Lantern for PS Publishing’s Absinthe Imprint, and to Daniele Serra for that glorious cover!
Full lists are here.

It’s that time of year and I’m so excited to see that The Bone Lantern has been nominated for a Shirley Jackson Award in the novella category! It’s a squeeeee moment because when I first read The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, I could never have dreamed of being on a shortlist like this – so I’m pinching myself hard enough to draw blood just in case I’m dreaming!
And I mean, jeeeeeez, look at this list!!

In Widows’ Walk, a quartet of witches band together in a single house, secretly working to protect young women. In the titular tale, The Wrong Girl, a frustrated artist turns the romance of her fickle friend and tiresome sister into a deadly masterpiece.Wry, savage, and written with the precision of a writer at the top of her game, The Wrong Girl and Other Warnings is a gift to those who already love Slatter’s fiction and those discovering her exquisite stories for the first time.
