News: Hellboy Universe!
I have been sitting on this news for literal years! Mike and I talked about it at the end of 2019, we were set to start work … and then BAM! The Plague Years.
But it’s all good – we’re up and running now, and Castle Full of Blackbirds is due for release in September 2022. It stars Sara May Blackburn and Miss Brook from The Return of Effie Kolb (with some guest appearances from the Big Red Guy) and I’m super proud of this little baby, which was a delight to work on … something new and entirely different for me.
There’s artwork, colouring and lettering by The Incredibles: Valeria Burzo, Wylie Beckert, Marianna Strychowska, Vanessa Del Rey, Michelle Madsen and Clem Robins that just brings Sara May and the Linton School for Girls alive.
Thanks so much to Mike for asking me, and then being patient with all those questions that started with “So, this demon back in issue #thing of 19whatsit5 …”, and a huge thanks to the Dark Horse Team (Katii O’Brien, Jenny Blenk and Misha Gehr) for their sharp editorial eyes, also answering all my questions and humouring me (“There must be a green leaf on that apple!!”).
“This September, legendary Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and acclaimed artist Valeria Burzo will be joined by award-winning novelist Angela Slatter for Castle Full of Blackbirds, an all-new miniseries from Dark Horse Comics. The four-issue miniseries will mark Slatter’s comic-book writing debut. Mignola, Slatter, and Burzo will be joined by colorist Michelle Madsen, letterer Clem Robins, and cover artist Wylie Beckert. Vanesa Del Rey will provide a variant cover for issue #1.”
Here’s the full article over at Daily Dead.
Aaaaaand you can pre-order at your local comic book store … in Brisbane I gravitate towards Comics Etc and Pulp Fiction Booksellers will also order it in …

Blurb!
Asher Todd goes to live with the mysterious Morwood family as a governess to their children. Asher knows little about being a governess, but she is skilled in botany and herbcraft, and perhaps more than that. And she has secrets of her own dark and terrible – and Morwood is a house that eats secrets.
With a monstrous revenge in mind, Asher plans to make it choke.
However, she becomes fond of her changes, of the people of the Tarn, and she begins to wonder if she will be able to execute her plan – and who will suffer most if she does. But as the ghosts of her past become harder to control, Asher realises she has no choice.

New Novels!
I’m absolutely delighted to announce that I’ve signed a two-book deal with Titan for new novels set in the Sourdough world. I’m so happy to be working with Cath Trechman and the Titan team again.
The Briar Book of the Dead will be out in 2023, and The Crimson Road in 2024. Briar Book will explore the lives of the Briar Witches – descendants of Gilly from the novella Of Sorrow and Such – and Crimson Road will delve into the early history of Fidelma and Orla who ran St Dymphna’s School for Poison Girls in The Bitterwood Bible and Other Recountings.
