ANOTHER HEAVEN only 99 cents for 5 days!

Starting Aug 3rd, ANOTHER HEAVEN will go on sale for .99 at Amazon at this link: http://goo.gl/jqZFb

And at Barnes and Noble at this link: http://goo.gl/nGaeU

The sale will go through next Wed, Aug 7th.

ANOTHER HEAVEN is truly one of my favorite books, and I feel I've neglected it. Bad me. So for less than the price of a soft drink at your local quickie stop, you can have a WHOLE BOOK (that took me months to write!!!!). Let's figure that if I got paid by the hour for writing it, at 99 cents for the completed manuscript, I'd be getting...uh, one zillionths of a penny per? I'm feeling a little faint. :-)

Confessions of a Thrift Shop Volunteer

People. Dealing with People. It can be glorious or it can be grueling. Anybody who has worked with the public has stories that are hilarious and hellish. After my mom passed away, in my grief and desire to contain memories of my life as a kid with 4 siblings in a big noisy home, with pix taken by my Dad, an amateur photographer, I wandered into a thrift store. (That is, perhaps, the longest sentence I've ever written). It was different from most thrift stores, looking more like a little gift store slash antique shop. Clean, smelled nice, with three house cats. This store supported animal adoption and rescue. I went there a lot. As a writer, I was able to make my own hours, and dealing with the sudden loss of my mom, I shopped. The store drew me back, and back. One day when a volunteer didn't show, the mgr was apologizing about the wait at the register. And being impulsive and needing--something--in my life to deal with my loss, I found myself saying, "I'll help."

Expecting the mgr to say, "Bless you, dear, but no," I was startled when she handed me a tray of donations and said, "Thank you. Please put these things out."

Wow, suddenly my life changed. I didn't know it at the time, but it changed. And for the better. From then on, while I wrote my contracted books, I worked in that store two afternoons a week. I loved it. Loved the people--on the whole. Loved the work, and the cause, being an animal lover myself. And in the course of my volunteering there, volunteering became an important part of my life--and inspired a great deal of happiness in me. I discovered that the quest for fame and riches, the pressure, the criticism from anybody and everybody who could read a book and had an opinion, was simply not that important. My heart had found another quest. And since my move to another town in Oklahoma that had a small animal shelter in GREAT need of money, a small group of us decided to create a thrift store.

But that's for future chapters. This one is about a boa constrictor. About a pet owner, who brought her boa constrictor along with her, in her car. Being a hot, Oklahoma summer day she asked if she could bring her boa constrictor into the store. She insisted it was 'just a baby' and she'd 'keep it around her neck.' Uh huh. Well, we gave her permission to bring her baby boa into the store (I wonder if the feather boa got its name from the constrictor?) I asked that her pet not eat any of our cats.

Her baby boa stayed around her neck, though every so often it stretched its little neck-ish-upperbody way way out towards a shelf, as though preparing to mount it. I held my breath, but its' 'mama' coaxed it back. I don't remember if she bought anything. I do know the snake was on his or her best behavior and no cats lost their lives in the visit. I did, however, incorporate the snake into my book SEX, LIES AND CELLULITE, which did have a heroine volunteering in a thrift store very like the one I had known. And, because of literary license, I embellished the boa's impact on the store and its occupants. Why write if you can't have fun? People and their pets make for great story fodder.

Future chapters here will involve the store a handful of volunteers created. Animal lovers are great people of all shapes, sizes and eccentricities, as are volunteers. I lovingly dedicate my experiences these past busy/tiring/fulfilling years have given me to our thrift store shoppers, volunteers and the animals we serve.

Holiday Memories

Holidays are times to create memories. Thanksgiving is an important holiday to my husband and me for two reasons. 1) We get to see our baby boy and his wife and 2) We get to celebrate both of our grand baby's birthdays, since they're right around Turkey Day. One of those precious memories is of my not-quite-two-year-old grand son picking blossoms from our 'ever blooming' Azaleas and gifting them to his Grampy. The part of that memory that makes me grin is recalling the growing pile of pink blossoms at Grampy's feet. Now these are the unanticipated cute-things-a-toddler-will-do memories that mean the most. I hope you all have memories of this past holiday that mean as much to you!

All my best,
Renee Roszel
